Marileidy Paulino currently stands the best chance of surpassing 47.6 in the women's 400m. It's her race just as the 400m hurdles is Sydney's race. Both ladies are the already great. The don't need to complete against each other just to satisfy spectators who can't outrun them.
TTS...before anyone speaks about athletes being scared of one another two points: 1) I'm quite sure Marileidy Paulino won't run the 400m Hurdles to prove she's faster than Sydney in her event...she'd get smoked! Nor will she move to the 200m where she would also lose not only to Sydney but also Gabby Thomas; 2) Sydney has already stated the goal she and her coach Bobby Kersee have set...run under 50 seconds in the 400m Hurdles...until done she won't be leaving her event. My comment is for people to just leave Sydney alone...Shes proven herself to be the best 400 hurdles ever..Now shes focusing on going under 50 sec..Just leave her alone and let her focus on that..What i would suggest is for Femke to move to the open 400 and challenge Paulino and company for that title since she apparently is not succesful at going against Sydney...Maybe she might be the 400 open olympic champion in 2028...
Marileidy beat Sydney in their matchup- Period. I do recall that Sydney's primary objective was not racing to win( of course she wanted to win ). She was tasked by her coach to run a particular pace in training prep for future hurdles events. I am far more interested in seeing this rematch than another Femke-Sydney rematch.

I think Sydney definitely has the potential to break the 400m world record. It is a matter of when and if she wants to stop running the 400m hurdles. They're two very different races and all of her focus would need to be on the open 400m.
