- Patrick Troughton and Devin Stanfield star in this amazing BBC Serial with brilliant animation and special effects. Based on the book by John Masefield
Original Soundtrack by Roger Limb

Made for fun not profit.
37yrs ago and still remember it like it was yesterday. Mystical....magical and so beautifully cast. Watch it every year with my own family leading up to Christmas and has become tradition. An 80s gem which I hold dearly.
Its a part of my child hood I want to pass on to my kids. If your a Patrick Troughton Fan (like my self) it is essential viewing.
This serial is wonderful - in the truest sense of the word. A children's book written by a poet is always going to pretty special, but Masefield's The Midnight Folk and the Box of Delights are the most perfect children's stories ever written (in my opinion).
If you have children or grandchildren, curl up on winter evenings with this, and watch together!
i watch this every year!!!!!!!! timeless and so chrissmassy i was kay age when this was first shown so means a lot to me
Me too Jay, really takes me back, loved it and watch it every Christmas now!
Loved this. My Auntie taped it for us in 1984 as she'd fallen in love with the radio series in the 40's or 50's..I then bought it on DVD to show my young children a few years back. Robert Stephens gives it 110% ;-)
There was a radio version BBC in 1966 still available online.
Magical Unforgettable iconic Classic 👑❤️😘🥰😍
Fantastic! I've got goose pimples just watching it. It takes me back to being seven. Coming home from school in the winter and sitting down watching this with my mum. Ever since being able to get it on video years ago, it's become a ritual to watch it every winter time. Happy, magical memories.
You've put this together so well! I first watched it in '95 or '96, my primary school teacher played us one episode a week leading up to the Christmas holiday.
Dude it was famous here in Algeria (North Africa) i used to watch it back to the 90s thanks for bringing back the awesome memories cheers
Excellent - really well done.
Loved this in 1984 - still love it today.
This really sums up the 1980’s around Christmas time, great memories 😊
Thank you.
i grew up with Patrick Troughton as the second Doctor Who and have always been interested in his work. A wonderful actor and human being!
Looks like a great serial!
The music and cast really brought the magic of the book to life!
Happy memories from child hood in the early 1980s
'The wolves are running' I say that almost every morning to my relief co-worker (when I'm on midnights) to tell him that I either saw or heard the wolves at night. And he never gets where it came from (shame on him).
any way, excellent job, and a nice tribute to your grandmother , I am sure she will be watching it over and over again!
cheers.
Beautiful iconic theme tune 😭😭😭👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
This is awesome,I'm only 13 so i wont remember this being on but i have the box set of the tv episodes - its probably one of my favourite movies/tv movies of all time, great work dude
The fact that they used old school effects and animation in many scenes only makes it feel more homemade (in a good way).
It's six days till Christmas. That means it's time for the Wolves to be running...
I watch one episode a night on the run up to Christmas, every year. I remember the when it was first broadcast in 1984. It's still wonderful.
Still love this trailer, prefect representation of this childhood classic
"Gosh! This holiday's turning out to be better than exoected." Indeed 😁
Before Harry Potter, before CGI graphics, there was "the Box of Delights." Still an eternal delight and a story for the ages, children 3 to 300 years old!
One of the most special pieces of television history from my childhood.
This and Flight of the Navigator are always on my yearly watch list.
A great trailer with a slightly darker tone, well made!☺️
Absolutely BRILLIANT!! A piece of art!
Brilliant, we had this and the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and let's not forget Puddlegum in the Chronicles of Narnia... “Very likely, what with enemies, and mountains, and rivers to cross, and losing our way, and next to nothing to eat, and sore feet, we’ll hardly notice the weather.”..."I shouldn't wonder..."
Great effort cbatt! In my humble opinion this is the BBC's finest hour. The most magical, Christmassy and enjoyable six episodes ever made. Too bad the comments have been hijacked by bickering Dr Who fans. Roll on 25 Dec - the wolves are running!
I was a humble student in 1984
always loved the Box of Delights :)
Such a marvellous adaptation
Class
great job!!!!!
this is cool. i vaguely remember this
HOOOOOLY SHIT! Flashback f.m.
What an obscure program! Looks good though. My Condolences to you for loosing someone very special. Make her Memory live on for eternity. :)
Stands up pretty well
@steffa72 Glad to inspire the next generation of fans Thanks for the comment
I was being facetious; just noting the similarities in the character.
As for Colin Baker, "mugging and smugging" was the whole point of his characterization of the Doctor as an alien being. There was, in fact, more than a little of William Hartnell in the way Colin played the Doctor, but with a good deal more bombast. I certainly find him preferable to the hyperactive stringbean who's playing the part now.
Good one m8.
If this was shown on kids TV today there would be rioting in the streets….epic stuff…
The kid takes it and then eat all the candy inside, the end lol
If they were to make a big budget movie version of this, who would you have direct and star in it? My mind goes straight to either Michael Gambon or Ian McKellen as Cole Hawlings, although that may be a bit predictable. As for director, perhaps Guillermo del Toro could infuse it with the dark magic he showed us with such films as _The Devil's Backbone_ and _Pan's Labyrinth_.
Not sure I'd agree with Del Toro to direct a film version, his style is more of a dark and adult look at fairy stories, where as Box Of Delights celebrates the magical joy of childhood imagination.
Personally, I feel like a big budget movie version of Box of Delights would be a waste. This particular serial is relatively obscure from my perspective (granted, I may be completely wrong about that), but those whom I've met that have seen it really enjoyed it for what it was. So there goes remaking the serial. The book's on my bucket list, but if it's anything like the serial, then it has a certain folklore-esque feel to it that Hollywood seems to misunderstand completely. Just look at the Johnny Depp Alice film.
Like lebroy said, it's really about childhood imagination. I see del Toro understanding that part, but then he would most likely make it a straight horror movie. I would have thought of Spielberg, but then I saw what he did with Tintin. He was almost there, but just somehow managed to not really touch how Hergé put so much charm into his stories. I guess what I'm trying to say is that some works are best left to be enjoyed as they are, lest their soul be lost forever.
I have it! You ARE Michael Grade, aren't you?
Crucially, and whilst Michael Grade was on record as disliking Dr Who prior to Baker being cast, neither Grade nor Baker have ever publicly acknowledged the personal history between them in that Baker's wife Liza Goddard left him to pursue a relationship with Grade. Although Grade was on record as detesting Dr Who prior to Baker being cast, the personal history in itself cannot be ignored, and must have been a contributory factor in both the original hiatus and Baker's ousting from the role.
Plus any director worth his salt would have cancelled Dr who then ..it was beyond shit
@@jonylawson73It was actually getting better during McCoy's last few seasons.

*Sixth Doctor
@gunners2009nl Run with the wolves!
And what the heck has his not finishing lawyer school got to do with what I said?
MaskedMan66 I would like to thank you. This comment made me laugh a lot! Very funny, can’t wait to see you on Graham Norton in future.
Are you a telepath? I'm amazed how you're able to say what Mr. B thinks at any given time. Like I said, I've met him, and he's one of the humblest people you could imagine; as is the case with many such people (actors and otherwise), the bombast covers the insecurity.
Your hatred is unreasoning. Get rid of it before it consumes you.
@1980martyn I'M afraid Matt Smith is suffering from Bad Script syndrome I like his performance but when you get shit scripts and story lines there is nothing you can do. Blame the Moff.
You mean Cole Hawlings ISN'T the Doctor??
Take it jk watched this lol
id love to see a doctor like the character patrick troughton's playing here
Troughton was the second doctor who. He replaced William Hartnell.
I still wonder from whence your unreasoning hatred springs.
You need help. Like I said before, hatred is unreasoning and indeed tends to erode reason in people's minds. Any amount of hatred is bad, but you've gone way overboard.
It would have been interesting to have seen Patrick Troughton play an older and wiser version of his Dr Who.
Did he snub you for an autograph, is that it? Or did he not read a script or story you'd written and wanted him to peruse? Seriously, you've got a mania.
@randomdave30 the nearest you will get is The two Doctors im afraid shame. id be content with having his original run of who back in the archives.
@randomdave30 Most were apart from the dalek one I still think its brilliantly directed and the music is amazing. Graham Harper did an excellent job (apart from the dalek voices) and it benifits from not having the Doctor in it so much.
Terrible memories being forced to watch this in primary school 😂
In total disagreement with you, mainly because I've met him. He's a warm, approachable, and (this is the point) self-depreciating gentleman. As for his acting, ask anyone who's heard his Big Finish audios and even former despisers of the Sixth Doctors will tell you they changed their minds.
I don't know where your hatred of him comes from, but like all hatred it's unreasoning and claims to know the hate object's very thoughts.
thing is, i don't see why they don't do a collective doctors theme now; you have several who are still alive and let's face it - the new doctor matt smith could use the help 'coz he is not a patch on tennent!
it is not the box of deligths that I traditionally associate with Patrick Troughton...!
no comment - but I do have his home address
Wow... and that's not creepy.
I would not wriite anything for Colin Baker or Dr Who in general, I used to write little stories in exercise books when I was a kid, but that's it Colin Baker does not 'snub' autograph requests - indeed he loves to oblige them because he loves feeling popular and celebrated - an autograph request for him flatters his gigantic ego.
What a lot of cock...
Yes he isn't. I would have preferred Patrick Trougton to have gone back into Dr Who than to have Colin Baker mugging and smugging his way through the part.
No - I have only slightly more respect for Michael Grade than I do for Colin Baker.
Love him if you are that easily influenced - personally I think he should never have been anywhere near the part. He tried to emulate and outdo Tom Baker but had neither the charisma or talent. Dr Who would always have been better off without him.
@cbatt91337 Yes, The Two Doctors was a major disappointment - even when I first saw it at 14, I found it boring. Not Robert Holmes' fault; he was given a brief to write to, elements for inclusion, but it never gelled and there was no real impetus to the narrative - like all the sixth Doctor stories, it was a lot about.... Nothing, really.
