Having a nurse as my neighbor is teaching me how to suture and put ivs in so I can be ready for anything. Especially my 95 year old grandfather who despises hospitals and will fight u on that.

That's great.
I would also advise learning how to apply a tourniquet correctly. Most improv tourniquets, such as belts or cloth material, will cause more bleeding to occur.

When I let go of both ends of the surgical knot, it always loosens the knot before I can secure it with another throw. I don't know what I'm doing wrong and I'm trying so many different things to keep my skin edges together but they always separate. Please help!

can any type of suture thread be used with this? what is the recomended needle size?

It depends on the area of the body. a.k.a the skin thickness. If you're doing this on an arm, I recommend a size 4. But say on foot, where the skin is thicker, use a bigger thicker needle. Like a 1 or a 0.
