What a great deal by Airfix anything a company will do for a modeller is great and what a nice set of decals that Spit is going to pop l would have happily taken up the offer but as a pensioner l have used my model allowance 🙄supporting my local model shop this month maybe next time 👍
Very nice kit, and I like the idea of doing the special scheme for it. I seem to recall when I build the dogfight double one that my spares box got a lot of donations and the kit fell together really easily. The pilot looks very crisp and should pick up a lot of detail, or the way I paint them a lot of washes to hide the poor painting skills. I would find it difficult to choose between the Eduard and the Airfix, the Eduard does have more detail to show, but is more complicated, whereas the Airfix is less detail (but plenty to keep you interested) but a more relaxed process. Thanks again for the review.
I think the question of detail is interesting. For me the main thing is to enjoy the build. I know that I'll never be able to match the extraordinary skills of some of these guys, so I'm happy to do the best I can with what skills I do have. Making microscopic folds in tiny pieces of photoetch honestly doesn't really appeal all that much. I've only just completed my first model after a 50 year break and it was a struggle at times to deal with such miniscule pieces (a Tamiya 1/35 scale BMW motorcycle and sidecar). On the other hand I'm totally amazed at how good modern kits have gotten.
It is a nice kit; I built the Airfix Club issue earlier this year. There are quite a lot of negative reviews especially about the fuselage inset just forward of the cockpit, but with a bit of care it is fine. I’ve just checked the underside of mine for that milled off access cover (?), I didn’t notice it when I made the kit and after a coat of primer and paint there is no sign of it. My main concern was the apparently flimsy joint between the undercarriage and the wings, but it works and there were no dramas. I have an Eduard Vb lurking in the stash, so will enjoy comparing them. Thank you for another good review.
great video Gary.. *lol* at '.. got it right this time..' when you flipped the box over.. Ref 10:10 where you said a part had been milled down. I wonder if it was an accidental whoopsie at the design stage. The two sides are identical aside from the panel milled off, so I wonder if at the CAD stage the part was just copied and flipped and only after moulding the error was noticed. That would be a very easy mistake to make. Those quick release fasteners on the engine cowling.. were they really so proud on the real thing? It seems to me they would disrupt airflow over the otherwise streamlined fuselage. I like the pilot figure's tie especially.. off centre as if he's dressed and scrambled in a hurry or been twisting his neck to see what's behind him. A very nice touch of realism. Looking forward to this build, especially the M4H colour scheme :)
Agreed, a little unusual to depict this subject's artwork in this manner, Gary, but I seem to remember Revell doing something similar for their 1/72 Macchi C.200 "Saetta' way back in the mists of time. The artwork showed this a/c inverted and, if I recall correctly, tangling with a Gladiator. Personally, I quite like it. It really adds atmosphere. That's just m.o.
Pleasantly surprised to hear a positive review of an Airfix kit. I'm not an Airfix 'fanboy' but they are not as bad as they are painted (at least to a layman like me). I've even unsubscribed to a popular youtuber due to his blatant bias.
I just take them as they come, and for the average modeller (like me) they are normally perfectly good. They have had quality control issues of late, but some of their newly created kits are very well designed and are of interesting subjects.
This latest mould of the Mk5 looks very nice indeed and I bought the italeri one to make but I think I will do this instead. To be fair the old Airfix 5 was pretty good for it's time unlike the horror of the Mk9 they once made! How they could make 2 of entirely different quality Spitfires around the same time still baffles me and I'm glad things have changed for the better.
Yes, they did. This a/c was originally finished as an RAF machine but when transferred for use in the USAAF, the top starboard and lower port RAF wing roundels were painted over, whilst the remaining RAF markings were replaced with US insignia.
Nice. Can't complain about a freebee! I like the box art. If I was looking at kits in a model shop, it would certainly catch the eye. Academy's idea of devoting the whole box top to the art work is good idea. I've my box tops to stick up on the shed wall at some point. Cheers for the review. Matt 🦘 PS Have you built the XIV? Good? I have Tamiya's new Mk. I and Eduard's MK. VIII but I'd like a Griffon engined cut down/clipped wing. Scalemates Airfix 1/48 Spitfire lineage entry is a bit messy.
I've made the XVIII which went together pretty effortlessly if I recall. Pretty sure the XIV was a new tool in 2019-ish as the start of the Griffon bubble-top range, which went on to include the XVIII and the Seafire XVII.
I suppose a quick barrel roll would be OK, as you'd have positive 'g' all the way round. Sustained inverted flight and there'd be the Merlin "cough cough" of doom!
Another great video Gary.
I'm looking forward to seeing the M4H decals on this one 😊

Looks like a decent kit Gary! I have the Spitfire that came in a dogfight double set with a a Bf 109
Me too Alan!

I've built a few of the later 1/48 Spitfires from Airfix, they're really nice kits with nice detail.

Hello Mr.gary!very nice. Thank u4sharing.with sticky greetings. Your modellmate.christian

Looks great, I was wondering what the round grey decal was then I saw the underside of the U.S one, interesting did they paint out the star?
Yes, they did. This a/c was originally finished as an RAF machine but when transferred for use in the USAAF, the top starboard and lower port RAF wing roundels were painted over, whilst the remaining RAF markings were replaced with US insignia.
@@markfranks1329 ah thanks, that makes sense.
@simonrichards6739 You're welcome. It was a good question. 👍
Have the earlier version of this kit upstairs, the one with the Malta scheme and RAF scheme. Want to improve my skills a bit before I have a go

Yet another Spit from Airfix, but ok as a free kit. Would give it away though.
Art work may be unrealistic. This model Spit would have had its engine quit when inverted. It used carburetors for fuel supply. Not fuel injection.
I suppose a quick barrel roll would be OK, as you'd have positive 'g' all the way round. Sustained inverted flight and there'd be the Merlin "cough cough" of doom!
I have the Eduard dual box of American Spitfire V, and the detail on them is making me wet my metaphorical panties. Can't wait.
