BBC coverage is such a breathe of fresh air when you live in the USA. Brits are much better at giving unbiased commentary. The Americans do nothing but talk forget that we might want to hear the floor exercise music. Thank you.
This guy is very unbiased and very very fair (I can't remember his name), I know he was a great fan of Mukhina and Yurchenko, they became a bit more biased in probably the late '80's, especially when Monica Phelps started commentating, although it could be said she was more rude against the girls rather then biased!! I'm British myself so I grew up listening to these, but I do agree with you regarding the US commentary and coverage, they seem to see no wrong in their US gymnasts.
The same is with ice figure skating. Most of the US commentators as well as the US audience destroy the beauty of a performance by talking or clapping with hands. It is also disrespectful.
~Olga Mostepanova's floor routine just brings me that euphoric nostalgia of the good old days. It makes me want to cry for some strange reason ?( maybe because she couldn't attend the Olympics due to the boycott :(((). UGH.. such passion and presence.
What beautiful extension in the leaps on beam from both Bicherova and Ilienko, just lovely. Such interesting routines shown as well. Amazing that the double back beam dismount was only pioneered by Mukhina just four or five years before this competition, and here we see Shishova showing a full twisting example! Stunning performance as well, the judges were even applauding that element. I wish today's code placed more emphasis on balance elements on the beam, as this code evidently did. Such control shown in the planche elements and needle scales.

Back then, they used the same commentators for MANY sports.....& they weren't very knowledgeable on any! Later they used ex gymnasts, who knew more about the moves
I imagine Natalia Ilienko's extension and body line is what Nastia Liukin tried to emulate and Elfi Schlegel and Tim Daggett from NBC swore she possessed, lol!
Is it just me or did Szabo really perform her double backs on the floor (including the full-twisting one) much much better here than the following year in Los Angeles? The lightness of 83 seems uncomparable with the heavy landings and ugly leg separations in 84.
Well, that goes without saying. But who got the last laugh at the Olympics? I know, I know, the Romanians were there. But Ma and Julianne got some well deserved “revenge.” And I’m convinced the gymnastics gods applied that .1 deduction for going out of bounds in ‘83 to Szabo in ‘84.
Such superb gymnastics but scoring was a joke. Szabo a 10 on floor with a glaringly obvious step out of bounds? What's the point of a code of points if you just ignore it?

This was, for me anyway, one of the most exciting era of women's gymnastics. These World Championships were so exciting at the time.

It kept getting worse with the 1988 Olympics and 1989 Worlds. By 1991 Worlds, the number of 10s given had dwindled down tremendously.
