@@DarthWall275 I think we should distinguish between modern and film martial arts, and actual combat styles that were used over a hundred years ago. Practitioners of various Kung Fu styles would do sparring fights in the past, they just dropped it somewhere after the war. I also believe that Kung Fu evolved from more lethal combat to more civilised duelling techniques even earlier than that. Something like that would happen with European fencing. Before sabres became continent-wide adopted weapon, sabre fighting styles were different to anything that came later, and reconstructions suggest these could be extremely quick and extremely violent swings. Sources from the XVIth and XVIIth century state that if two sabre masters duelled, the fight would often last for just a very short moment, often resulting in one opponent being killed or both badly wounded. In the XIXth century when sabre was adopted continent-wide, it was still a combat weapon and the new Western fighting style was combat worthy, but it is much more static and tactical and allows for controlling aggression, rather than wounding or killing hordes around you. Then we've got modern sports fencing that has nothing in common with any of the combat styles, and if applied in real combat would have been suicidal for both opponenents if both were using this, and if it was used against historical combat style, the sports fighter would have easily been defeated and killed. People say a lot of crap about martial arts, but in the 1920s, 1930s, fights between boxers and Karate and Kung Fu practitioners would happen, martial artists were well able to win against boxers. That's why these things became somewhat famous in the West even before the martial arts films era. It's just a theory but I think that when Kung Fu would still do sparring, the idea for the arts was more about duelling between practitioners, and self defence against those who were not trained at all. There are several moves from the arts that actually work great against people who don't know how to fight, plus every fight involves psychological element. I imagine masters would duel in terms of mastering the technique, and on the street the arts worked for disarming those who can't fight and scaring them off.
Boxing can be a defensive style too, in here they just made boxing look dumb, the boxer isn't even covering and he's always swinging unnecessarily long hooks
Sorry to disappoint you but actually he couldn’t do it because he was having a Asthma attack, he would have definitely done that if it weren’t for his condition
I only just noticed on this watch through, that Master Hong has breathing difficulty at the exact moment he grabs twister by the neck. I’m wondering if this scene isn’t just be a coincidence, rather the implication being that he has reached a state of zen, oneness. The idea that the world is a mirror, everything is one, part of eastern philosophy to my knowledge. He can’t breathe because he is choking himself…
Yeah in these types of movies it's a common theme that some old master has to die to give the next guy the inner strength and motivation to win. Always honour and revenge; never seen Bruce Lee fighting for money have you?
No, pride killed him. It's a central theme of this particular movie. In the end, Ip Man celebrates the duel along with Twister. I think it's the only "final boss" where Ip Man speaks directly to the audience after the last fight.
He sacrificed himself for the Chinese martial arts reputation all over the world..... He had got a point .....yes He died because of pride .... But after all he died with dignity...... This is the best role Sammo hung ever performed in a movie .....
@Benny there's only a training journal from 1965. Bruce was only experimenting back then. He reworked his workout regime multiple times. Of course, he wasn't a professional fighter and I doubt he'd beat any modern UFC fighter but he'd be able to kick your ass 99.9%. Bruce trained with karate champions of the 60's and exchanged ideas with them. It already shows that he wasn't as weak as you say he was and most likely understood more about martial arts than you do.
@Benny well, I never said he fought them but he trained with them. They confirmed it.Have you trained with any champions since you are so full of yourself? Why don’t you show us some video as the proof of your abilities? For now you are just another person on the internet who shit talks others.
@Benny not a very smart reply tbh. Who are you, a 5th grade kid? I'm not the biggest fan of Bruce but I can look at things objectively, unlike you. I repeat it again: as long as you don't show what you can do yourself, what you say about Bruce won't matter. He achieved much more than you in life. You need to be cautious about accusing such people of "being weak", "being able to break them like a twig" etc, especially if you can't do shit yourself.

Well he didn’t have to die but he chose to fight till the end no matter what because he realized he would rather die fighting for his people and martial arts culture ,than to give up and tell the Westerners and others that Chinese martial isn’t good. cause him giving up or resigning in a fight, would lead to everyone else not attempting to fight the twister since he was technically the best master fighter there was, while Ip man was still kinda unknown. And if The master gave up, then everyone would not even try. So he fought till his death to show he was willing to die for what he loved and felt was necessary for his people. Even if he did wanted to give up cause he was hurt badly.

Instead of getting pummeled into the final round and finally Remembering.
Because he dont think about it yet untill he almost lose and think about him.
The moves didn't work so well when Hung did it. WHat Ip really did was attack the biceps to weaken his blows like he told Hung to do as well.
That's like me tho..When I almost lose in a battle, I remember something or maybe a strategy to weaken the enemy. (But it rarely happens)
The similarity this movie has with Rocky 4 is hilarious!
2:14 -- I like how the ref starts counting, "1! 2! 3! ..." about 8 seconds after Hong is flat on the mat.
Yeah he was no Nigel Owens was he?
@@joebloggs5318 No, he wasn't. I agree with you completely. He wouldn't hold a candle to Owens.
(Quickly looks up "Nigel Owens," not having a clue as to who that is ... Oh, wow. Someone who can get that long a Wikipedia page devoted just to them must have really been a great ref!)
5:03 when he decides to die as a master/warrior: shocking and amazing as well...
RIP Darren Shahlavi (Twister), he passed away in 2015.
“If he dies….he dies” - Twister
In the true Life: judge would do his job and don't let Twister hit 200 punches after the opponent is already beaten and save Master Hong's life
In the movie: Fuck it, let this old man die
Keep in mind this is a bunch of racist British people running this fight
@@daustin8888 yeah, true
I think if this was held in current era, it would be stopped at 5:00 (KO) or at 5:40 the referee should hold Twister back and gave him the win or TKO
Or master Hong just spread a Covid to defeat twister and everyone in the stadium.
“True life”💀😂
For those who do not know Darren Shahlavi the man who plays Twister died at 42.
They all die young
Rip I hated the twister character but im sure he was a good guy in person. Good actor went too young
i know he died to a heart attack in his sleep caused by atherosclerosis
Sammo Hung moves so well for his size and age. Regardless of the wire works, his movement is still fantastic.
It's really interesting that sammo hung didn't choose the comedy route of his movie career like Jackie Chan did throughout the years.
IP man is genius
He watch enemy weaknest, he is defend till the right time then counter attack
H is very humble and respect the enemy

In Kickboxer Vengeance: HE is killed in the ring this time.

Does that bother you!? Who cares!!!
Buena pelicula y ahi el maestro murio con honor ante un temible rival 🤘🏻
Love this movie! This is kinda like their version of Rocky 4
Pride comes before destruction. Getting killed because of pride is stupid, no matter what the situation is. Live to fight another day.
After this fight , Ip Man's wife tells him "You can't win". So he gets in his car and goes for a night ride listening to "There is no easy way out"
I like how throughout the fight you can see the boxer being eager to re-enter the fight and engage his opponent while master Hung is usually the one falling back and resetting his stance
It shows how one style is way more calm and composed than the other style. Both still being valid fighting styles just that one is more brutal and less merciful
Boxing is just generally more practical and down-to-earth, and less about the artsy flashy BS.
I think this says more about personality than style. Not all boxers are this way.
@@DarthWall275I think this says something more about you than “the style.”
The fact this movie had martial arts vs boxing was amazing. Also love how this references rocky 4
I like how Cool Ip and Hung were at this point, like brothers
Do note that Master Hong got Twister with a choke, but refused to kill him. That's some real manliness
Sorry to disappoint you but actually he couldn’t do it because he was having a Asthma attack, he would have definitely done that if it weren’t for his condition
Wtf dude Master Hong didn't "spare" Twister. You don't know how to watch a movie...
Bro master hong fought to the very end. The determination to win back the honor for chinese Kung fu is so strong in him. Mad respect. 👍
Yeah in these types of movies it's a common theme that some old master has to die to give the next guy the inner strength and motivation to win. Always honour and revenge; never seen Bruce Lee fighting for money have you?
Ip Man defeated him in order to get revenge for Master Hong.
What I love is Darren Shahlavi aka Twister is a skilled Martial Artist, as well as a skilled boxer.
Just shows how much of a beast Hong is. He was in the fight, a lot older and not in the best shape vs an athletic strong boxer.
So painful to watch this scene 😞 bcz of ashtma, he died....otherwise he could have easily won the fight 🥺
"-Apollo..i have to stop this fight!!"
"-You don't stop nothing man, you hear. You don't stop nothing!!"
...2 minutes later
"-If he dies, he dies"

I cry many times for this fight scene.

🙏I love Sammo Hung and don't care for bad comment 👎 which can be fun about killing old man.
This fight scene was hard to watch.
Relatable, everytime I watch this movie I would always skip this scene.
Mr. Hong almost won the fight with that claw to the throat, but ashtma 🙄
Thanks for the video & the hard hitting nostalgia!

This fight should never have occurred. A real fair fight ? Old man with asthma.
Againts a man in his prime while being healthy and has no problems with health no sicknesss no nothing completely fine? Literally unfair this fight should not exist in real life battles
The ref ever heard of stopping a fight? Lol
Back in those days, fights went until one fighter couldn’t answer the 10 count. As many rounds as needed.
IP Man should have thrown the towel in no matter what Master Hong said.
Edit: further to this, according to the Queensbury rules, Master Hong should have been declared down due to rule 5: “A man hanging on the ropes in a helpless state, with his toes off the ground, shall be considered down.”
@@Danlows1 I don't think Master Hong would have forgiven him. Remember, these martial artist masters put pride and honor above their own lives. Same as a samurai committing seppuku. Honor and pride was too valuable.
@@PupusaJrYT China and Hong Kong didn’t have the same code as the samurai (bushido) but I agree Master Hong wouldn’t forgive Ip Man, however I would rather my friend/respected colleague hate me and live than respect me and die for his own pride.

I never knew boxing is agent Smith's favorite sport.
At the end there Master Hong was about to literally rip twisters throat out before having another attack and pulling away, brutal dude
It was meant to be an athletic contest not a fight to the death. If Hong 's ego was so fragile that he wanted to kill his opponent then he deserved what he got.
no he wouldnt of killed twister, it was a death move but the refs wouldve likely intervened and gave master hung the W, but the asthma attack fucked him, also lmfao how ironic u say its an athletic contest not a fight to the death when the man literally killed him. @@joebloggs5318

A showcase where power overwhelmed technique. If Master Hong were younger, or at least not suffering asthma, the fight could have ended differently.
But masted hong didn't have the power to do enough damage to twister. Look what one punch twister did to master Hong, knocked him to the ground.

😃 " 🧡 , the great, Sammo Hung. "
His efforts at defending the chinese martial arts makes me learn a lot
Looking back at this scene I realized that the master didn't have to die, he should have stepped down once IP Man was about to throw the towel for him. His pride got the best of him. I only say that because he had a large family he neglected and left behind.
Not really he had the whole pride of kung fu and china on his back
Well he didn’t have to die but he chose to fight till the end no matter what because he realized he would rather die fighting for his people and martial arts culture ,than to give up and tell the Westerners and others that Chinese martial isn’t good. cause him giving up or resigning in a fight, would lead to everyone else not attempting to fight the twister since he was technically the best master fighter there was, while Ip man was still kinda unknown. And if The master gave up, then everyone would not even try. So he fought till his death to show he was willing to die for what he loved and felt was necessary for his people. Even if he did wanted to give up cause he was hurt badly.
Many times people always UNDERESTIMATE the power of humbleness.
Pride will lead you to fall but being Humble is just another extra superpower which we don't recognize in us and that can lead us to our unimaginable victories.😊
@@dannieel1327 Humility does not mean having to stand idly by while your people and culture are being attacked. Humility is not the same as pacifism.
@@sheepisfortheweak6164 It's not always necessary to win and sometimes humility is inevitable.
Just by accepting the fact and moving forward is the better option and someday you might see yourself more stronger than the one who made you feel humiliated once.
Then justice will be done.
Also, it's not necessary to react on the spot always so yeah can say pacifism is way better in that situation. As I said earlier Justice will be served but at the ryt moment.
This is the main reason why lots of people SUICIDE. Can't accept the REALITY, it's your PRIDE that kills yourself. So better accept the reality than living in fantasy.

The thing about Boxing is, it enhances the natural Agressiveness that a man has within them. For professional boxer that practice control, it wouldn't really be all that troublesome, but for those that embraces those violent tendencies, it's hard to stop swing even if they WANT to stop.
