    Tip for digital art: when defining a brush for line art, make the line thickness (a.k.a. the brush size) AS WELL AS opacity vary with pressure. For line thickness you can go the full range from 0 to 100% and define a pressure curve that feels good for you. For opacity I recommend a range of about 80 to 100% and quite a steep curve. That way you get this fading effect near the start and end of your lines, just like with pencil on paper, but don't have to press too hard to draw the bulk of the line.

    • @Javicandraw
      @Javicandraw  Місяць тому +7

      This is true! I'm not crazy about brushes so I always just either use a pencil brush or a regular round brush with opacity and size set to pressure sensitivity.

    Line weight is internationally made more ‘static’ so it keeps the animation from flickering and being easier/faster to finish.
    Aladdin is a good example of using varied lines in its animation cause it’s modeled after Al Hirschfeld’s style. However it is a lot of busy work since the clean up artists have to go back and add the line weights.

    I noticed this myself a couple weeks ago, not on Ranma but just on modern anime as opposed to older anime. As an elder weeb, I frequently go back and watch old anime because it has been on my watchlist for twelve years, and lately I have gotten very aware of how simplistic and static the line weights are on most recent anime.

    • @Javicandraw
      @Javicandraw  Місяць тому +10

      I know, I think it has to do with TV Sizes and resolutions (the original Ranma was probably being watched on 14 inch CRTs, which is 1/4 of the size of the smallest TV you can get today), but I think there's also a missed oportnity there. I used One Punch Man as an example but it's just one of many where line weight can be used to define the look of the anime.

      Modern anime look kinda ugly to me because of that. They all have this art style that looks like disinfectant. Older stuff felt more artsy if that makes sense. And of course there are modern animes that look amazing like Samurai Champloo but the majority nah

    The problem is that this kind of thing makes the production of an anime difficult, especially the digital painting process, in an anime production you have to make your final line in a very specific way to make it easier for whoever is painting, and the animes that They do vary in thickness in the lines, they are usually in some scenes, and not in the entire anime, and they are exceptions. And in general, you have to do more work in the overall composition of the scene if you have this variation in thickness, so it's much more about how a production works in general, rather than seeing it as an illustrator, and not as an animator. And even as an animator, thinking like an animator within a production, other people are not you, and you have to adapt your work so they understand and can do their work too. These tips are completely valid for an illustrator, comic artist, etc. But production is a little more complex than that

    • @jamminoutrexan5474
      @jamminoutrexan5474 Місяць тому +12

      Yep. Animation is a monster of an undertaking, and having line weights stylistically be the same between all artists would take a lot of communication and collaboration. Most animation, especially animation for TV (versus film), doesn't have the luxury of getting the necessary time.

    • @pensandoemalgo.5722
      @pensandoemalgo.5722 Місяць тому +5

      @jamminoutrexan5474 Well, the Remake's animation is apparently really good, and that should be their priority, and in an animation, not only the lines communicate, but the movement, but people, even though they always watch anime, don't even know how to differentiate the drawing. of the animation itself. Sometimes it's also not about being impossible, but about being that way for the health of the production, because yes, they had time, and they are making great animation.

    • @albericponcedeleon2696
      @albericponcedeleon2696 Місяць тому +11

      While there are practical reasons for why recent animation has favored static, uniform line weights -as you have thoughtfully outlined- Javi's tips are still just as valid for animators as they are for illustrators. It's more a matter of trade offs: you make X easier, but give up Y in the process. I'd even say that it's still a useful discussion for people who may not draw themselves, as they can understand why newer projects may not feel the same beyond nostalgia goggles. Btw the Ranma ½ remake has some interesting and enjoyable creative choices, for those who may not be watching.

    • @pensandoemalgo.5722
      @pensandoemalgo.5722 Місяць тому +8

      @albericponcedeleon2696 If you allow lines to always vary, animators will basically never have similar lines, and it will be a mess, animators who vary lines throughout a project, usually then doing the animation alone, which doesn't make a difference, but with more than 1 person, This kind of thing gets in the way, and only very specific paintings, precisely made to stand out, have a different line of consistency. And even animations with thicker lines have the same process to be able to standardize and not disturb the animation, like Kimetsu. In general, in the industry you won't use much line variation, and you will have to finish your drawing like any other animator or they will want to kill you

    • @Javicandraw
      @Javicandraw  Місяць тому +14

      I know, and I agree (i even mention that a consistent line makes sense for work involving lots of animators). The Ranma example just triggered my need to talk about line weight, not in animation, but art in general. That's why in the end I mention different illustrators and not animes. Also thank you two for adding so much to this conversation.

  • @magictriangle6878
    @magictriangle6878 Місяць тому +13

    I think the shoe example only works because the paper is white. I think the point is not always to erase the line, but knowing when to not close a shape that's interacting with another shape

  • @comet-soda
    @comet-soda 28 днів тому +15

    To be so real with you, I don't think shifting line weight looks nicer than the style of the remake. I think weightless lines have their own stylistic quality to them when used effectively with other related stylistic elements, and I do personally much prefer the look of them in projects like the Ranma remake. Obviously different lines having different weights (like for the eyelids or profile of a figure) is helpful to break up form, but I think line weight that shifts more naturalistically within a single line creates it's own different distinct stylistic look.
    When you put the lineart comparison on the screen, I personally did find the "cleaner' style of the left figure much more appealing.

      @YuktubeIsDaFunniOne are you an artist? Because this comment seems very ignorant of the artistic process and how wide ranging it is between different artists with different styles. I can promise you, spending a little less time on adding perfect variation to lineart is not in any sense an inherently more "lazy" way to create art. Especially when it comes to 2D animation where the process is already ridiculously laborious

      @ I’m talking about the entirety of ranma remake overall, watch 10 episodes of the original ranma and then the remake and you’ll see what I mean. And adding slight line variation is not hard, digitally animated anime like one piece have been doing it since episode 1

      It's a matter of taste, nothing more. I don't think the new Ranma looks bad, but I did prefer the charm the old one had. That made me think that I should talk about line weight in a video so I did, that's all! Obviously the animation studio that made the new Ranma also like thin lines, that's why they chose to use them.

    I think a better discussion would emerge from a comparison of manga art with shot-for-shot equivalent animated frames. Manga lives on line quality because it's designed for black and white printing. And...many of the manga veterans have not gone digital, because they can't get the same lines without their traditional inking tools. See most episodes of "Urasawa Naoki Man-ben" for examples.
    Comparing old animation with new is going to say more about the production process than the individual drawing decisions, as other comments have noticed. There's a huge meme from casual viewers of "bad drawing = bad animation" that just serves to get animators riled up.

  • @Renigaderz
    @Renigaderz 3 дні тому

    I feel i unintentionally use different weights for lines when it comes to art. Im very traditional when it comes to lining work and if a line happens to go a bit to broad i kinda leave it there and it sometimes helps the piece lol.
    Imma defend the Ranma 1/2 remake a bit here just cause some of those posts are kinda disingenuous or just in poor faith cause if ya watch the show itself the art style changes a lot during some scenes or just focuses on colors more. Those colors even sometimes referencing the OG mangas color pages by the author. I think they where trying to find their own style with the show to set it apart maybe? Also the older anime when it was first airing was slightly panned early on cause of slow pacing and general random filler put in. (shrug) Honestly both have faults in some way but calling the newer one bad just cause of the look is really more opinionated. lol as most things are. I will always prefer older colored cels from cartoons of old but man the expense of doing that now would be nuts!

      Make the lines heavier manually by making more line strokes where you want it to be thicker (make sure you have a smooth transition from thiner to thicker)
      Or
      Make the lines thiner by manually erasing the sides of the line stroke.
      I used to draw on a 2DS Miiverse, which was only Black and White canvas, and it works exactly the same as MS Paint on the lineart weight topic

      I was about to write that and looked if anyone had already posted it
      Although I won't say 100% of the old animation was better, I consistently see better thought-out shots in the old anime.
      It often feels like the studio that animated the 1992 series had a better understanding of weight and momentum.
      Also the rhythm, the new animation often kills its jokes with a false rhythm either too long or too short (mostly too long), they make a transposition of the manga without thinking enough of the unique aspect of the animation.
      Yet old anime had its problems too, the introduction of Shampoo being one of them as it was underwhelming in the old and the new anime wins in this case as they were closer from the source material that had a better dynamic

    • @YuktubeIsDaFunniOne
      @YuktubeIsDaFunniOne 26 днів тому

      @ I also feel like the remake doesn’t really know how to adapt a manga. Although it is “following the manga closer” it seems like they don’t really know how to follow a manga, they gave ranma pink hair because her first colour spread appearance had pink hair, but every other colour spread has different coloured hair. They also added in so many onomatopoeias and made a lot of shot’s backgrounds be one or 2 colours. Which although that is present in the manga it’s present because of the limitations of manga, the original ranma anime understood that and adapted the onomatopoeias into sound effects, and one or 2 colour background shots were limited to action scenes. The thing that angers me the most is how generic the new character designs look, Genma in the original looks like an actual old man you’d come across, while in the remake he looks so generic and not even that old, aswell as all of the female character designs now having the same face. I also miss the unique proportions like genma in panda form being all bulky and big and Azusa having giant eyes, now genma doesn’t look like a strong panda and just a weak flimsy one, and Azusa just has the copy pasted face

    As a 2D animator this is not an appreciated observation. The line weight of the old Ranma is just as static as the new Ranma. The difference is the old Ranma was done by physically hand painting the cels, whereas the new Ranma is inked and painted digital. You’re not seeing intentional line-weight differences being employed in the 90’s anime, you’re seeing the unintentional imperfections painting by hand quickly and cheaply produce. 2D animation doesn’t generally employ line weight variations for a very specific reason: if even a single frame is inconsistent it leaps out at you as a mistake. The fixed sized line weight of 2D animation is intended to ensure the colors and movement stay clean and consistent.
    So using Ranma and 2D animation in general as an excuse to talk about line weight usage results in you unintentionally telling people that this is a bad thing animators shouldn’t do and you’re making it easier for people to use this as an excuse to call out shows they don’t like. Just like how the “Cal Arts Style” argument was used to call out shows and creators certain people didn’t like. I know you had good intentions, but I do not appreciate what you’ve unintentionally introduced into the discussion by doing it this way. You wanna talk about line weight? Go ahead. But by linking it to your observations of the Ranma Anime comparisons you’ve just created a shorthand for idiots who know nothing about animation to use this as an excuse for why “X show is bad actually.”
    Not appreciate.

    • @YuktubeIsDaFunniOne

      Actually ranma remake is just lazy, the lines in original ranma aren’t “poor and to save money” they are smartly placed to get the message across of what your looking at, the new one is just thrown together lazily without any smart exaggeration, realism, and little to no detail. And digital animation is not like this all the time, take a look at one piece for example, since episode 1 it has been digitally animated and since episode 1 the lines have not been a singular size. Ranma remake on the other hand is lazy slop the doesn’t bother to do any interesting or attractive designs with lines, colour, camera angles, character designs or dialog.

      I OWN a bunch of original Ranma 1/2 animation cells. I love the original anime, but there is NO DENYING the cheap ass production quality on those cells. “Deliberate” my ass! Those cells are cobbled together with duct tape and glue. It’s a miracle the 90’s anime looked as good as it did.

    • @jimlight5137
      @jimlight5137 27 днів тому

      @ you’re also just… wrong? They shake up the art style ALL THE TIME in the remake! Half of the first batch of introduction fights are intentionally stylized differently than the rest of the show. Every episode has a different intro with a different style to tell the story of Ranma’s curse. The animation is high quality without being over budget and insane. And the designs match the Manga much more closely than the 90’s anime did. If you’re talking about design and aesthetics you’re just FACTUALLY WRONG. You’re just a hater.

    • @YuktubeIsDaFunniOne
      @YuktubeIsDaFunniOne 27 днів тому

      @ take a look at the comparisons in the beggining, the original anime EXAGGERATES the manga’s features to get the point across better in animation, the remake smoothens everything out which makes everything less unique and clear in animation. Also if you think the remake shakes up the animation the original does everything from paper cutouts, to real life stop motion, background parallaxing, real photos and hiding details in impact frames. And with aesthetics, again, take a look at the comparisons in the beggining. The original references real photos for the backgrounds to make them all the more realistic, relatable and far from generic, whereas the new one either has plasticy lifeless backgrounds where you can tell they drew real life from memory and it’s so generic it doesn’t recall any emotions or unique experiences, or just makes a lazy 2 coloured background with onomatopoeias all over the screen. Not only is the colouring and style a lot less attractive and unique but the way it is presented and the range of emotion and colour and designs has been smoothed out and is too scared to take any risks with cool camera angles or unique proportions. Also the remake making the shading for everything purple during fight scenes is not aesthetic, it’s just lazy. They obviously know NOTHING about colour theory and it just further contributes to the whole show looking flat, uninspired, generic, lazy and rushed

I have more experience in this field than you do and I’m telling you that you’re wrong and are just using anything you can grab on to as an excuse to justify your hate. It’s pathetic and sad and I pity you.
