Much of the improvement from this season is blending the various story threads in a more flowing way. With Gimple, it was like one episode each, and it made it hard to stay interested when you were wondering what was going on with other characters. Better casting plays a role. Magna and Co. are a great example. The kid actors are better. Plus, directing and writing have improved... likely because the showrunner changed... or maybe they actually listened to the fans for a change. I love the shots this season. Like that aerial one of Hilltop is what I wish we saw when it was first introduced. That's how I always imagined it. Man, I was ready to give up after the last two seasons. They butchered Negan and somehow made him more comic booky than the comic version. He was laid back instead of the buff intense drill sergeant type in the comic. The war played out very weakly. Too much fighting in the woods and not enough of Negan in his glory. Anyway, this revived my interest. I don't even care that Carl and Rick are gone. They're remixing the story in a good way.

I think the Xs on back had to do with why there is tight security and protocol. I mean the few years from Hospital to Farm to Prison to Alexandria, a lot of stuff happened, so in 6 years I bet stuff happened, too and without a lot weapons, I doubt they could have defended themselves.
I 100% agree! To me, it's crazy that so much shit could happen within like 3-4 ish years before Rick's "death" and seemingly nothing could happen within the 6 year time jump. So something huge MUST have happened in those 6 years, which we will probably find out about. It definitely has to do with the X scars, and maybe Maggie?
The X-scar on their back is probably connected to Rick's disappearance/death and they could be the ones who put that on each other so they would remember his "sacrifice". Maggie would probably have the same scar if and when she comes back. The scar was conveniently placed where Rick was wounded from his last episode.
