  • Things got serious yesterday. The Met Office picked up a harmonic tremor pulse midday Wednesday that indicated strongly that there will be a fissure volcano in Reykjanes soon (Þráinsskjaldarhrauni to be precise, if you want to twist your tongue). Therefore, we sat down with Rögnvaldur Ólafsson, spokesperson for the Civil Guard as well as Kristín Jónsdóttir, the earthquake hazards coordinator about the newest developments.

    When you hear about earthquakes and magma it can sound worrying and even scary so having it all explained clearly and calmly like this is really useful and interesting.

    Great video Valur - and thanks to Rögnvaldur and Kristín for speaking so knowledgeably and clearly (and not in their native language too!) Though after the enormous success of your last video, you really should have brought your scientific Viking helmet along for the interview.
    If anyone is wondering what a harmonic tremor is - it’s very much like the banging and rumbling sounds old water pipes make when you turn taps on and off in the house. They’re caused by magma moving through the crust and are often linked to an imminent eruption. Though volcanoes being volcanoes, sometimes the magma just sits underground and never erupts. (Please don’t erupt until I can come and visit!)
    Stay safe everyone.

    I spent two years at Keflavik, from 1974 to 1976, and did a lot of hiking and camping in that area. I climbed those volcanos too, and have pictures stashed away somewhere here in my home. Thank you for your excellent reporting. This is a thrill for me to watch. I loved my time in Iceland and still have friends there.

    Icelanders seem to be excited about a volcano and even enjoy the possibility of viewing one. Thanks for the great coverage.

    Can we talk about those trees? I don't think I ever saw a single tree that tall while I lived there. The running joke was always, "if you get lost in an icelandic forest, stand up." Amazing progress. Save the Blue Lagoon from lava at all costs. ❤️ Perlan! Oh, I miss you Iceland.

    Does the moon affect magma the same as it affects water? Could it be named as one of the influences that would increase the magma flow upwards in regards to the moon position?

    • @nothanks3236
      @nothanks3236 3 роки тому +2

      If there's any affect it is negligible. Geologists have discounted this as something that affects magma movement and volcanic activity.

      @@mpk6664 I hope you have more of a thinking brain than the brainwashed that listen to the like's of Greta, Al Gore, David Attenborough, U.N and W.E.F after all this winter many many places around the world recorded record cold temperatures so how is that working for the names mentioned?

    • @bramsrockhopper3377
      @bramsrockhopper3377 3 роки тому +1

      @@davidkarl9935 Look up the words ‘weather’ and ‘climate’, and then rethink your comment. Weather is the overall conditions in your area today, this week, short term. Climate is the average conditions in your area year to year, overall decades, long term. So the weather can be very cold for a week, but your area can still be warming consistently.
      Like many people, you don’t understand what climate change means - it doesn’t mean the whole earth warms up evenly. It means that there is more warmth in the atmosphere, which means it can hold more energy. So rather than things all changing in the same way, what happens is that normal weather events become more energetic, more extreme and have more impact. So in reality, extreme cold events happen, the same as heat events get worse. Storms become more intense and more frequent.
      Every winter there is this confusion. A harsh winter means nothing if overall the global temperatures are still increasing.
      It’s well worth looking at the actual scientific graphs on this. It’s actually really interesting - and knowledge is power.
