Well, the NANO CORTEX, watched a few reviews, seems to be the PERFECT gigging solution! I want to see you Andy, geting hold of one of these and giving a proper user review! One of the reviews I watched made everything look really simply to capture and get a right stonking tone! For something at home? Well, to me, it feels perfect and way better than a practice amp! Could be wrong but, this seems to have the simplicity for use along with the Pro sounds we all dream of! Do it Andy, do it! My only gripe is, yes, the price! There is a lot of gear out there, way cheaper! I think 399EUR would have been a more sensible price giving retailers some flexibility to discount 🙂
Not that it’s cheap but the Les Paul studio has been $1500 for many years I think…not sure why $1600 is such a surprise considering they added more desirable burstbucker pickups and neck binding. It’s also $400 cheaper than the studio modern they released last year. And though there are better alternatives…an Epiphone is not one of them imo. Eastman, ESP and anything made in Japan would be my choice at this price point. P.s. I still enjoy your funny comments.
I agree with much of what you say about the LP Studio except for the bit about the absence of binding on the body which I like. It’s fair comment about having necks with binding on what is supposed to be a stripped back model. I own an SG studio and previously a LP studio and they definitely didn’t used to have bound necks. I like the blueberry burst, even though as you say it makes no sense. Both the studios I’ve owned were just wood with a wood stain on them, which were more appropriate on an entry-level model. When I bought my studios, 10+ years ago now, they weren’t cheap but they were within reach. Also, the budget guitars that existed then were a lot more of lottery with regards to quality compared to now. It’s reasonable to expect to pay more for a Gibson vs something mass produced in China but prices are currently out of hand
The LP Studio with just neck binding and non-dot inlays reminds me of the CBS era of Fender, where they did that to the Jazzmaster and Jaguar, which also didn't get body binding.
My first idea about the L. P. Studio, why neck binding . . . I settled for an Epi Les Paul Studio Lite (whatever the bolt neck is maimed, oops, 'named'). Its usable and no worse than the spendier models at $235.00 for a 'blemishd' model. Blemish was a loose strap button. I chose the walnut finish, my last choice from what was available blemished. Wish I'd paid normal price for a finish I liked. Upgraded tuners and pickups, its "good enough ".
1. I wonder how much cost/price difference the binding makes? 2. The benefit of no binding is easier fret repair. 3. The blueberry burst isn't even a burst. 4. I remember when standards were around $1,700. 5. For that price it's smarter to buy a used standard or classic in today's over saturated market.
regarding the Studio there is a case to just got for fhe more recent inspired by Epiphone Custom, you even get the gibson headstock profile. Having said that I do want the purple Studio ever since I saw it at the Gibson Garage in London earlier in the year!
The problem with profiling the plug-in for use on the nano cortex is that you are stuck with that sound that you have to make work in the live environment. It may change drastically and you can’t adjust the sound without sound destroying EQ.
If you've watched any Gibson factory tours you'll know the necks are bound before they are glued on the neck. So removing the binding would be an added cost.
I'm hearing you, and I see your point, but... the blueberry burst with on that new studio looks so good and 1599 is within my range... barely, but layaway... the triple caster I just don't want in that color for that price.
Between the signature amp and triplecaster I think I'm more excited for the latter although something tells me I'll probably never have the chance to play one regardless. It really does seem like a dream guitar for a gear geek though, so many random bits and baubles and limitless character just like Andy!
"Classy up top, questionable below..." 😂 When I first saw the release videos for the new Studio something felt off about it but it didn't hit me until you pointed it out, I do love the Blueberry burst finishes they have on a few of their guitars though 😅 Love your gear reviews!
People looking for more affordable but great sounding Gibson Les Paul's could look at early 90s Gibson Les Paul Studios. You can still pick those up for about £800-900. Some of them, particularly the wine ones with ebony necks nowhave a classic look which is stunning to me too. Below that, the discontinued Les Paul Tributes do actually sound really good, and I like their finish. Their light and mine plays really well, and sounds fantastic. If you can try a few and pick the best one, they can be a bargain, at only a couple of hundred more than the Epiphone Inspired by Gibson. The Epiphones are really great too, but for me personally, I slightly prefer the aesthetic and sound of the stripped down Les Paul Tribute. They never should have discontinued that range. But, I guess they wanted people to force people to pay £1500+ for Studios.
Wooowee Neural DSP ignoring Andy’s emails! How dare they....also...I brought the IK Micro Monitor Pros back from Germany and I'm really enjoying them! They sound great!

The neck binding on the Studio is probably a feel thing, so while the guitar might look like a slightly lesser Les Paul, it doesn't sound or feel much different from its more expensive Standard counterparts. As for the finishes, they've done plenty of burst Studios in the past (tobacco, silver, fire, smokehouse), and I guess the blue guitars have been pretty popular.
The Nano cortex is ideal for someone like me. I have a QC , it’s great but… it’s big, you can get option paralysis and I only use the capture functions. I know I’m not the typical user however I with you think the nano is about taking your tones with you as a compact gigging rig.. I think the angst comes from the lack of pedals and effects, but I think these will come down the line with an update.
Amp captures and amp models are different things. A capture is just a snapshot of some settings, while a model lets you adjust all the settings. So, if you're someone who prefers models to captures, capturing the model is clearly not what you want. I'm wondering if maybe Neural is planning a second product to sell alongside the Nanocortex to handle plug-ins. Probably not, but it seems clear there is a huge demand for something like that. Weird that they haven't done it.
I'm really happy to see Fender doing this. We need these legacy brands bringing in new things rather than going the re-issue after re-issue route *coughGibsoncough*. Love how whacky that guitar looks; very alternative, very demure. The only thing I don't quite like about it is the fact that the three knobs are so close together.
Hoffman's Iron Law can be summarized as "small, loud, low: pick any two". There is no way that the iLoud Micro Monitor Pro's 50Hz rating is the standard ±3dB.
The time when a LP studio was like 800€ new, I still remember it.. must be getting old ^^ .. for over 1800€(!!) I could get two Ibanez guitars with better quality and this is not even taking Gibsons shady ethics into account :joy:

I don’t like fuzz in general (you asked Andy!). I’d rather add more overdrive or distortion pedals. I do like the sound of the tuna fuzz and for a 100 bucks (the international currency standard) I might just get one.

"Why not just hook the output of your audio interface to the capture input...."..Because Neural DSP have been promising integration of their plug-ins with the Cortex system (since the Cortex was announced) for years and completely failing to deliver, while shoving out another product consumers didn't ask for instead. Why buy new product when they can't even deliver the features they promised for the existing product?
@irrationalmachines Really? From the web site, looks like only two amp sim plugins are supported: Archetype Gojira X and Archetype Plini X. 2 out of 20, with only another 4 "coming soon". Look, if Neural DSP floats your boat, more power to you. It's not for me, and the severe limitation in terms of what the Nano can do for it's price (only one fixed chain, where you can only swap the capture and the IR, not anything else or the order, and you only ever have one type of reverb, one type of delay, and the only modulation effect is chorus) just doesn't make me want to jump into their ecosystem when there are much more powerful options for less money.
I am thinking a gently used Gibson LP is the way to go. Heck, even a Tribute that has a stronger maple neck (dare I consider that is an improvement?). However, I already have a nice Epiphone and have no “need” to upgrade.
I bought a new Gibson LP Studio with fuzzy hard case in Guitar Center about 15(?) years ago. I think I paid $799 +tax I'm certain my total was less than $900. Inflation I guess...🤔
The Nano Cortex is an odd product - is there much of a market for guitarists with a lot of gear worth capturing, are interested in Neural DSP and haven't already bought a QC? It would make more sense (to me at least) for them to make an affordable entry point to their modelling - remove the touch screen, the capture tech, and a bunch of the footswitches, maybe halve the processing power, and control it all from their desktop software, for around the cost of the HX Stomp. Feels like that would be a more viable product.

H.B. makes one for 89 bucks merican that is essentially a Quad cortex in the size and footprint of a nano.
Glad I’m not the only one who thinks the neck binding is odd
The gain on that amp sounds like a five dollar fuzz box
It’s ok, it will be out of date in a couple years. But, I was shocked to realize I don’t have an amp from the 20th century anymore 😮.
Fender - What Pickups do you want Jack?
Jack White - All of them!
What happened to your hair? Did you fall off your ride on mower and accidentally got mowed ? 😂🤣😂🤣
Cheers from NZ 😎🎸🤘💕andy did you end up buying the Kim Thaile Guild ? Did you notice that Guild released the Polaras ? Tbh i want both 😎
"Why not just hook the output of your audio interface to the capture input...."..Because Neural DSP have been promising integration of their plug-ins with the Cortex system (since the Cortex was announced) for years and completely failing to deliver, while shoving out another product consumers didn't ask for instead. Why buy new product when they can't even deliver the features they promised for the existing product?
fair point. But to answer your question: 1000+ euros difference in price with the quad cortex for anyone without the quad
I need that tuner fuzz
I am thinking a gently used Gibson LP is the way to go. Heck, even a Tribute that has a stronger maple neck (dare I consider that is an improvement?). However, I already have a nice Epiphone and have no “need” to upgrade.
The difference between need and want can be so fine
Well darn, you're visiting Germany 50 days before I move there! 😂
I'd prefer the j90 in the neck position. Probably leave the wide range off entirely.
Do we know if the Fender Pano is hand wired? At that price it arguably should be.
I’m almost certain if it were hand wired Fender would call that out just like they do on all their other hand wired amps.
So, what's the top amp of 2024? I didn't hear it mentioned in this video?
I never thought I needed a fuzz, then I saw the can of tuna..
You left out PCB circuit board electronics from the list of things to not like about the Les Paul studio.
Yes, smash Gibson and you will always get a like from me.
I bought a new Gibson LP Studio with fuzzy hard case in Guitar Center about 15(?) years ago. I think I paid $799 +tax I'm certain my total was less than $900. Inflation I guess...🤔
Fender can have 18 versions of a Stratocaster, but if Gibson refreshes one model, they get a bunchof grief for it.
Not if they stick to what the studio is for
The Nano Cortex is an odd product - is there much of a market for guitarists with a lot of gear worth capturing, are interested in Neural DSP and haven't already bought a QC? It would make more sense (to me at least) for them to make an affordable entry point to their modelling - remove the touch screen, the capture tech, and a bunch of the footswitches, maybe halve the processing power, and control it all from their desktop software, for around the cost of the HX Stomp. Feels like that would be a more viable product.
