There was a mistake at the 1:45 mark. I re-used the title card from the Ion Sparrow and the "20 ton omni-mech" didn't get erased. I apologize for this error.
Obviously, the Exterminator is not a 20 ton Omni-mech.

      ^^ Mistakes Happen^^
I wondered why you did not talked about the Royal Exterminator EXT-4Db (XL-Engine, 6/9/6, 1 ER-Large Laser in the Right Arm, 6 Medium Laser (2 Mediums each Torso Side and 2 Mediums in Center Torso), 1 Small Laser in the Head, Endo Steel, 13 tons of Standard Armor and 11 Double Heatsinks. The Mech has enough free Space so that a Chameleon Light Polariation Shield could be used (it is not known if it did).
The EXT-4Db was the Mech of Andrej Kerensky durng Operation Klondike (and he died in it when Nicholas Kerenskys Wife send a Star of Assasins to kill him and make him a Martyr to further Nicholas Plans for the Clans...it seems Nicholas did not know about it, but he also seems not extremely disturbed)
PS: The entry for the EXT-4Db in Sarna ist not correct. You need to look into Operation Klondike Record Sheets to get the correct data.

The most fundamental problem with the Exterminator is it would simply have more weight to play with at 5 tons lighter (at 60 tons), with a 300 or 360 XL engine. It doesn't use its maximum armor so the larger chassis is mostly wasted.

We saw one of these in a long standing tabletop MechWarrior campaign. It was liberated from a star league cache we were also searching for and we had to fight it and a couple other 2750 mechs. The game master came up with special rulea for the null signature system as advanced rules for it did not exist yet. Those homebrew rules made it effective as the books portrayed, it was hard to hit and even disabled our command mech.

This is a good video. While the only thing that really notable about the original Exterminator is it's slick design and maybe it's speed, I liked how it gets a bit of a "redemption ark" as the tech it's supposed to have had becomes available.
If I did get my hands on a 4D, the low-tech tweaks I'd make would be to drop the engine to a XL325. I'd also swap all the lasers to their pulse forms, add about 2 tons of armor, and another double heat sink or two. I'd still have 2-3 tons left over and I don't know what I'd do with them. More lasers, maybe? Anyway, I think with even that "minor" tweak it helps it slide into it's head hunter role a little better, even if it's moving at a more average speed.
Can't wait for whatever is coming next!

  • @krissteel4074

The jungle, it came alive and took him!
They aren't a bad 65tonner, the extra armour will help when you inevitably bite off more than you can chew and most of the weapon loadouts are kind of 'so-so'. Does it live up to its name as an Exterminator? I'm sort of not quite sold on it being that but it would have some really good uses finding enemies and not getting blown away by them immediately as soon as it got into range, plus its plenty fast for doing the GTFO maneuver
Personally, I would like to have seen it given something spiky or for bashing other robots- set of claws, retractable blade, big hatchet etc
I think having one pop up and remove all your back armour or head knocked off would have contributed to the pants shitting terror it was supposed to inflict on enemy forces

I made an Exterminator IIC following the introduction of IICs all of those years ago. I followed the idea of dropping weight for cost savings, it is still 7/11/6, LRM 10 (2 tns ammor) 4 ERML AMS ECM Active Probe w/ 6 tns armor ... is great for hunting Wasps, Stingers, Valks, etc. made a 6/9/6 that had additional SRM 6 (1 tn ammo) ERSL 3 ERML ECM AP LRM 10(2 tns ammo).
I like the two tons of LRM as it can be used for Mines, or Smoke as well as direct attack. The SRMs on the slower were an added crit seeker.
Personally I always loved the original art of this mech and even though it had no bells or whistles of star league i had a character run one for many many campaigns ... it has so many replacement weapons over the years - i swear every one of its lasers was a different manufacture by the end... his son had it into the clan invasion by the time he left the fields of battle, it had been upgraded with 4 clan er ML, 1 ATM9 (2 tns ammo) the orig AMS and ferro armor - the 1/5 for the small put on in armor. .. the fun of having long running campaigns back in the day

The Exterminator is my favorite mech to play with, well the 4C to be specific. The Exterminator is a Battlemech that does an amazing job regardless of the variant.(Yes even including the 3rd Succession War FWL downgrade) it's a staggered fire runner that jumps in and out of cover any chance it can. The iNarc platform and the more niche support platform made by the WoB are fun gimmick mechs, but the Comstar refit with CLPS like the original and the "standard" 4D are brutes on the board for being a skirmish mech. The only variant I'm mixed on is the new ilClan rec guide version, or really any version that drops the jump jets, since the mech works best with them as a 5/8/5 platform.
Again, this machine is my favorite in the setting, it's the epitome of a nightmare made reality and I love every inch of that mech.
    Plus it looks amazing.

    • @ambientlight3876

Generally speaking, I find the Exterminator to be 'ok' but not truly living up to being a hunter killer mech. Its ammo based weapons are counterintuitive to something that is supposed to be in the field for extended periods of time, and it simply lacks the firepower it should need for such a role. Of course, I've played with my own variants, including a 3025 variant that was little more than a PPC armed lighter version of the Grasshopper. I also created an ER PPC version with stealth armor and a supercharger, as well as improved Jump Jets...

The Exterminator is one awesome looking mech, almost like a blade. And the latest artwork by Alan Blackwell looks fantastic, i love it.
On the other hand, capabilities-wise, the mech is kinda lacking. It sacrifices too much for speed IMO.
Granted, that gives it the capability to get where it needs to be when it needs to be there, but the weapons are awfully limited, most other 65-tonners have significantly more.
At least the LRMs give it long range indirect fire support capability while the medium lasers are solid for short range engagements. Yet it seems like a one-trick-pony.

I can see the successor states targeting this puppy as a priority asset to control or destroy given the sneak tech, but I feel like the prime armaments are suboptimal to capitalize on said sneak tech. Usually you'd want Gauss head clipping or some other kind of knockout punch. A generalized loadout can work on a stealth, but being able to end a fight quicker is usually better when you're already springing for the good toys to get into position without being detected or effectively target locked. Because if you have to start slugging it out and range bracketing, you've lost the element of surprise. Now, maybe you've already done enough damage or evaded enough before the straight fire fight to have made it worth it, but fading away and eliminating witnesses seems harder than it would ideally be here.
Though the prime loadout is quite nice for a generalist heavy. As is the 4A.
I like the 5E, but I'm a sucker for combined arms systems even ones that are only great in theory. Also load Nemesis pods for maximum, "F_ck you in particular."
7X is just a mess. Do not want.
Your MF variant seems best suited to rival the Scarecrow.

    • @MechanicalFrog
      @MechanicalFrog  4 місяці тому

I don't mind the Exterminator, though the best variant (imo) is the EXT-4C with the Null-Sig CLPS systems. The MechFrog variant isn't bad, either. As always, I've created my own variants. Yes, variants, as in 'more than one'. The first one, the EXT-4ISM, makes the Exterminator into more of an infantry-/Battle Armor-hunter design. It goes for mixed-tech, using an Clan XL engine, Clan DHS, and a few Clan weapons. In the right torso I placed an IS Plasma Rifle with 2 tons of ammo, while a pair of Clan ER Medium Lasers are carried in the left. Rounding out its offensive power is a pair of Clan Micro Pulse Lasers in each arm.
The second variant, the EXT-4ISM-2, has the same base stats and such, though its armor is Clan Standard rather than IS Standard. While it lacks an AMS or L-AMS (like the first ISM variant), it's geared more for 'Mech vs 'Mech combat with a right arm Large Re-Engineered Laser and a pair of left arm Medium Pulse Lasers.
Both of the ISM variants would rely upon their Null-Sig and CLPS systems to get close to targets, but infantry and Battle Armor would definitely need to be wary which version is after them.

Never used the Exterminator on the tabletop, so I cant say much to its performance. I would like to try one out just to see what shenanigans I can do with it, maybe the 4D for starts. The lack of a dedicated primary weapon leaves it a bit underwhelming. The MechFrog Variant I like for that snub-nose PPC so it can finally deliver a nasty hit in one shot (admittedly the closer you get). Art wise, It grew on me over time. I like the sort of smoothed over look of the original, but the new CGL art is great too.

The EXT-MF lacks a way to hide from sensors entirely: the Chameleon Light Polarization Shield doesn't help with that, and the ECM Suite will tip off enemies that something is jamming them. I'd have gone with the Null Signature System, which *does* hide the 'Mech without any indication it is nearby. Stealth armor (like the Kontio, which is honestly way better in this niche) and the Void Signature System can also do that.

TSM + Battlefist + RAA (reinforced arm actuators) in arms.
    JJ std Sprawlings.
Pair of 3 ton hatchets, one held in each hand. Battlefists are backup to hatchets should they get dropped. Last few tons of carry weight were bolt on disposables changed for missions or arena duels.
Weapons in arms changed to pair small pulse lasers on each.
But torso upgraded to hold weapons that could be used in melee.
325 Vox std fusion engine with 10 DHS. 5/8/4 profile.
SRM 6 with 1.5 tons mixed utility ammo in case. In LT.
RT med range weapons were a snubbie and CT and Head had medium ERs.
Head also sported an armored cowl, which made ejection sys require a full head ejection sys.
ECM, Beagle or active probe to help find and target infantry, movers, and stealthy mechs.
Retains IR baffles and had room for stealth armor/sys upgrade, but I had no points/tech available or c-bills for it.
Alternatively, you could drop the hatchets for a plasma rifle or pair of laser pistols with limited shots.
My intent was to make a headhunter actually capable of taking a mech's Head and carting it off.
Rest of tonnage reserved for armor.

This is a fine example of a mech that is amazing in fiction, but the game rules simply do not allow that to be the case on the tabletop. My house rules modification to allow for this is to add to the effect of the stealth systems.
I change them for each system as follows.
book rules: +1 medium, +2 long
house rules: +1 short, +2 medium, +3 long, +5 extreme
This takes the mech to +6 to hit at long range making it much more in line with the fiction. Just make sure you put in a limit on the number of mechs that can be in game with these systems so as to keep it in it's 'specialized' and rare class, or the game will become completely unbalanced.

I've always felt that the 4D was never armed properly for head hunting. All that sneaky technology suggested it could get in close so why the LRM? SRM's seem the better fit, as well as a flamer. An elite head hunter would sneak in close, turn the target into flambe with inferno's and the flamer, then backstab with lasers and another SRM hit. Exchanging the M Lasers for Pulse lasers would be nice but heat and weight might cause issue.

  • @jamesbeard5513
    @jamesbeard5513 4 місяці тому

Lore wise, it is pretty nice. Tabletop, not so much. As the standard 4D is, it makes more of a cavalry mech or something heavier being part of a faster unit than usual, similar in concept to the Linebacker in that way, if just weaker with Inner Sphere weapons and equipment.

A specialist that has trouble fullfilling other battlefield roles then search and destroy and hit n run. The exterminator comes across as a speedier quickdraw with marginally lower firepower. Wich considering its 5 tons heavier... is not so great considering the quickdraw being a poor mans heavy mech to begin with.
The exterminators meager firepower puts it at a real disadvantage against equally sized mechs, or even heavier medium mechs. It is best used as a melee combatant but even there it has to pick its targets wisely due to its low armor wich makes it vulnerable to counter attacks.
As a merc this one is tricky to recommend. Its nearly extinct status during the 3025s makes it allmost impossible to aquire so its not even an option. Later on after it re-entered production an aspiring merc commander has to understand that the exterminator is not a frontline unit, nor does it have the flexibility of other designs. It might be a good pick for merc units that focus on target liquidiation, industrial sabotage and hit and run tactics though. The Exterminator also makes a decent guerillia fighter thanks to its basic weapons loadout and its 9 hex jump range, allowing it to strike and disapear as needed, provided theres difficult terrain to exploit.
Lastly the machine has a reputation of being difficult to maintain, so unless you have some veteran or elite mechtechs you might want to skip on this one before it falls apart in your hangar or your mechtechs rebel because of overwork.
All of these reasons make the exterminator a mech I would only recommend to seasoned units with the necesary experience and bank account. Mercs who are starting out or are just getting into the thick of things should prolly avoid fielding this machine.
My last bit of advice is: The exterminator is a dagger that you jab into the back of the enemy. So.. dont bring a dagger to a gun fight XD

Hmm what if we start with a ext 4d. Switch out the armor with clan stealth sourced from the spector lines. And a clan lrm 10. Using that saved weight for a half ton more armor, and lowering the engine to a 380xl and using the saved weight for a guardian ecm and 4 c or is medium pulses and a targeting computer. All this off the top of my head. By doing this we could save a ton on refits in the feild with this pack age alone

Oh I kind of hate the Exterminator by itself. Its so wrong. Its got a huge engine with only light weaponry. Its a Quickdraw, but even more impractical. It could be a "bully mech" that specifically targets lighter mechs. It would be good at hunting Wasps. Its not a good idea to send a 15million+ Cbill mechs versus mechs worth 1/10th of its cost though.
But then you have it as a platform for the Chameleon Light Polarization System. Now then it has an actual mission profile as a hunter-killer for and against commanders. The Exterminator is okay with that, but theres another mech, the light Spector, that uses both Chameleon LPS and a Null-Signature Generator.
If people allow it then Chameleon LPS and a Null Sig-Generator should be used, because they cause so many accuracy penalties on the tabletop. The Clans still technically have them and in fact one clan faction, The Society, made both and applied them to make the Cephalus electronic warfare mech.
