      I always wanted to see that in the canon, alter mech cockpits so pilots could wear battle armor and perhaps even make that the standard. Every mechwarrior wearing if not an elemental suit, at least an environmentally sealed PA[L] exoskeleton (but hopefully a light class battle armor). With armor, jump jets and even integrated weapons, pilots would have a real chance of survival anywhere they punch out and perhaps even maintain some combat effectiveness. Lore wise I know those are two very different skill sets and there are a ton of in universe reasons that won't be happening (life is CHEAP in the inner sphere if they can't bother to put c.a.s.e. on the Atlas-7S), but damn it'd be fun.

    One of my absolute favorite 'mechs. In early days of MWO, I had one of the most tense matches of my time playing the game. It ultimately came down to my Atlas, dry on ammo and with only the center torso lasers, against a Catapult also out of ammo and with just its center torso lasers. The enemy team had wiped my allies hard but taken enough damage that I was able to clean them up (I couldn't support the push because I was dueling a pair of flankers at the time), but the Catapult had managed to put enough damage on my Atlas that a stiff breeze would finish me off. The match ended with simultaneous lasers crossing and killing both of us, leading to perhaps the only honest draw I've ever seen. Zero survivors. It was glorious.
    If I were going to upgrade a 7-D (always the truest form of Atlas IMO) for the ilClan era, I'd start with the obvious: cDHS. Pack an iHGR or maybe a big HAG as the right torso cannon, supported by MMLs. Put a pair of cERSPLs in the rear CT, and some kind of upgraded medium laser in each arm (I'm a fan of reengineered lasers, but cMPL and cERML both have a lot going for them). If space allows, consider an engine switch to a cXL and bump the armor to hardened and see how much you can stack. I'm away from my mechlab apps so can't have a go at a proper build at the moment, but I think the general theme would probably work just fine. Finally, see if you can slip in some CASEII for emergencies.

    One of my fondest memories of the Atlas was during a MWO session with 3 of my friends in a lance.
    After a long, hard fought battle in the center of the map, it looked as if victory was secured. Our light mech pilot (who recently got into MWO, let alone Battletech) spots 1 of the 2 remaining enemy mechs. "It's a big mech with a skull face" was his words when we asked to identify the target. In unison, myself and the other 2 lance mates in a voice of fear asked, "An Atlas?!" as all of us were at 50% combat effectiveness and below.
    Luckily, it was not an Atlas, but a Crusader. We secured victory that battle, as if it truly was an Atlas, things would not have gone our way.
    We love the Atlas for the way its imposing and brooding figure strikes fear into the hearts of our enemies. Even the name alone is enough to cause the anxiety to spike and skin to crawl for just the meer mention of it.

    I used to field a modified AS7-D in my Tabletop Company. I did the blasphemous move to reduce the Armor of the Atlas and remove the Backfiring Lasers, together with the LRM-20. I replaced it with 2x LRM 15 to have him more like the old Ral-Parsa Models with the Double rows of LRM left and right with 16 tubes. This Modell only works in 3025 games: With 15.5 Tons of Armor it has still enough Armor to have statistical one or two criticals in CT before the Armor is worn through. Especially as the standard Tactic to fight an Atlas is to stay at 10-12 Hex. But with basically a CPLT-C1 together with the Armor of a AWS-8Q without Heat Problem you have the Choice: Be hammered down in Long Range or try to take it down in a heavy Assault and focus him, when he has to switch down to AC/20, SRM6, 2xML and 1x LRM 15 can move and stays at 0 Temperature as long as it doesn't run. Never had Problems with the lack of Backfiring Lasers, and it was taken down everytime i fielded it, with critical hits not Armor Breach, but the opposition always lost 2-4 Heavies in the Assault on him. With Clan Era Weapons it doesn't work, then he needs it's 19 Tons.

    @freeranger00 5 місяців тому +1

    I find only a single 3025 assault a bit scarier, that being the King Crab, but the Atlas is just a mean customer to deal with.
    Early last year I played a match, Classic Btech with 3025 tech level, against two friends, they went heavy controlling a lance each and I countered with a medium-ish company. One of my buddies ran a King Crab and the other had an Atlas, they rolled both in, just grinding it out against my skirmishers. Finally, I had the two in a tight confine and jumped my heaviest mech, a Victor, into position for a rear AC/20 shot. The player running the King Crab replied by headshotting the Victor with his AC/20 twice, a freak occurrence, and technically not even possible as the second hit would travel to the CT, but still.
    Anyway, the Atlas then proceeded to get into melee range with a Grasshopper, Enforcer, and Panther (tight confines and I was trying for a quick kill on it and the King Crab), I killed the King Crab fairly quickly, but the Atlas was just invincible and mauled my force.
    Moral of the story, don't underestimate 3025 assaults at close range and even though the Grasshopper is king, that doesn't mean it'll win a boxing match with an Atlas.

  • @strcmdrbookwyrm

    Starting the year off right I see!
    Yeah, the Atlas is one of the two main faces of Battletech. If I were to try and describe it in as few words as possible, I'd say "Staying Power." Sure it's going to take forever to get into position, but once it's there, good luck moving it! And it really says something when your chassis is remade not once, but twice, because it was so good.
    Upon hearing your comment about the AS7-K's gauss rifle, I knew I had to throw my hat in the ring with a variant that could use the weapon without worry.
    I decided to try and make this variant as durable as reasonably possible. I took inspiration from the WoBbies Celestial series omnimechs and gave this Atlas a compact engine and gyro. I also added endo-steel to compensate for the tonnage sucked up by those components. It uses a total of 14 double heat sinks, which should be enough to keep it cool (I think?).
    The armor has been dropped to 19 tons, but the protection remains roughly the same thanks to Light Ferro-Fibrous armor. I haven't distributed the armor yet, though I'd probably move some of the armor from the arms and side torsos to max out the legs and CT, respectively. Both torsos are protected by CASE, so any damage from ammo explosions should be mitigated.
    Weapons wise, this variant does bring the gauss rifle I promised. It resides in the right torso along with two of it's three tons of ammo. 24 shots might be excessive, but I figured it's better to have it than not. The left torso holds a MML 7, giving a mechwarrior a choice between additional long range and short range firepower. It's two tons of ammo, along with the last ton of Gauss ammo and a Double heat sink, are also in the left torso. Each arm has a Inner Sphere ER Medium Laser, and a Inner Sphere ER Small Laser rests in the head.
    The real star of the show is the Center Torso. The two rear-facing medium lasers are still there, but the extra slots from the engine and gyro are given to a Snub-nose PPC and a double heat sink. While it's firepower is probably only comparable at best to other variants, I think there's something to be said about this Atlas being able to keep fighting even when reduced to a CT with legs (especially when it still has enough heat sinks to handle firing all remaining weapons, running, and the heat from two engine crits and only hit +2 heat). Zombie Mechs for life!

    I love the Atlas because it's the metaphorical end dot to any engagement. If an Atlas shows, you know one side is committed. It's their way of saying "here and no farther."
    No one employs nor engages an Atlas lightly. It's a guarantee that someone on either side isn't coming home.
    The "skull head" exemplifies this aspect, and reminds us that war is always messy, always tragic, and sadly, necessary in some cases.

    I'm a big fan of the AS8-MF Atlas. It makes sense for it to be a Free Worlds League variant imo, both because M in variants usually means Marik and because the only Inner Sphere manufacterer of Clan-grade endo steel and double heat sinks is Technicron, the venerable producer of the Awesome. The weapons loadout is also distinctly FWL, as they love their Large Pulse Lasers and LB 10-X Autocannons. I can definitely see your variant as a Purple Birdlas.

      to give a summary:
      ● the Free Worlds League likes lasers (specially pulse ones), light gauss rifles, and missiles, and tends to have difficulty sourcing PPCs outside Awesomes
      ● the Capellan Confederation likes flamers, plasma rifles, hypervelocity autocannons, electronic warfare, and stealth armor
      ● the Federated Suns like autocannons of just about every kind, but also field a lot of PPCs and energy-heavy 'Mechs to reduce logistical strain
      ● the Draconis Combine loooooves PPCs (standard, ER, Snub, Light, Heavy), swords, and special armor types like ballistic-reinforced, and for a time had difficulty getting double heat sinks
      ● the Lyran Commonwealth loves its gauss and heavy gauss rifles, ultra autocannons, and tends towards lots of ER lasers and generally very expensive tech, like XL engines

    I think the RS variant is really under-appreciated. The main (and perhaps only) problem with the D is that most of its firepower is at 270 meters and under. The RS gives the mech solid medium-range firepower, making it's slow speed less of an issue. I'd take the RS over the D in almost any situation, except maybe city-fighting.

    The Atlas is just a nice mech, and dare I say, gorgeous from a design perspective. Some of the newer variants have their appeal. The AS7-S4 is operation sneaky-sneak to the max level with its stealth armor, and with all its range weapons is like the modern day snipers in camo. The AS8-KE, the side-grade which improves durability using a standard engine with next to no close range weapons and two less DHS. The C2 and C3 variants by Sea Fox refitting some old Atlases with Clan tech are two different variants. The C2 is the traditonal Brawler but having an ERPPC instead of a LRM-20 and having ER Larges in the arms like the 7K, and the LB-20X is a nice hole maker or exploiter depending on how much damage the other mech got from the further reaching weapons. The C3 variant is artillery with enough bite to scare off many lights and fast mediums looking to silence enemy artillery.
    While I prefer the brawling variants, I do respect the specialized variants as the threats they are and know they will hurt no matter what comes against them.

    I first encountered the Atlas in the MW2 expansion Ghost Bear's Legacy. As I had no familiarity with Battletech lore at the time outside the game, I had no idea what the "I.S." prefix meant, or why it seemed so undergunned, being several tons underweight due to there only being Clan-spec weaponry in that game. However, I knew it was something special, and it immediately became my favorite mech in the game, eclipsing the Marauder IIC which was my favorite up to that point. As I learned more about Battletech after discovering the books one day in a bookstore, it just further cemented the Atlas as my vehicle of choice, and as the games went on and got better, so did my love for this hulking brute.

    Frog, thank you for acknowledging the Atlas II, while not going into detail on it considering the fact it is a different mech to the Atlas. Trust me, as a guy who's got about 9 Atlas IIs (7 CGL sculpts and 2 original sculpts) it's nice to see it only get touched on, since that means it might get a video at later date! (Also it'd be awesome to hear someone finally talk about the fact that without the WoB taking over Hesperus II during their rampage, we wouldn't have the Atlas II back as an option to non clan Homeworld players.
    Okay, now I'm gonna talk about the Atlas.
    It's a mech I rarely use it on the board, I use it far more in the video games than the tabletop or Megamek, since I normally take smaller mechs in the ladder.
    The AS7-D, AS7-Dr, and the RS are the variants I usually run when I do run an Atlas. Now I'd love to try out the Atlas C3, which has a gauss rifle and Arrow IV, problem is the fact it's a clanner refit, good news is, I'm building some Clanners.

    Atlas is basically the quintessential Assault mech.
    It is, in default config, an offensive powerhouse. It is not a long range sniper, like Awesome or Highlander, or a pre-dreadnought on legs that is Stalker. It is a beast designed to get into the thick of it and wreck anything that dares stand in its way and live to tell the tale.
    When you say assault mech to someone new to the setting, and clear that this is the heaviest of the heaviest kind of deal - this is the type of machine that will immediately come to mind. A monstrosity of steel and myomer designed to punch through any defence, and outlast any foe.

    The Atlas is a really iconic Mech and together with the Madcat, they form the poster children of the franchise.
    Specialized assault Mechs like the Viking or Devastator might outperform the Atlas, but he's still a might force to be reckoned with.
    The S7-D is a great brawler for urban areas (preferably hostile urban areas) or canyons. The S7-RS seems to be a quite decent mid to long range version.
    I absolutely love the S7-S2 version, who can say no to a Heavy Gauss Rifle? It's like an AC20, only with much better range and the ability to knock you right on your ass, which is always hilarious.

    The Atlas is very iconic, and definitely has a variant for everyone. I've personally made 3 variants for the Atlas, 2 of them because I wanted alternate weapons that still used the visual look of the AS7-D and the AS7-S. The first one I did was the AS7-DMN "Demon" Atlas, a very pricey custom variant for a Magistracy of Canopus MechWarrior. It utilizes an IS XL engine, Light Ferro-Fibrous armor, Double Heat Sinks, an XL gyro, and 4 Jump Jets. For weapons, it has a Plasma Rifle with 3 tons of ammo in the right torso, 2 rear-facing ER Small Lasers in the same location, an MRM-10 and MML-5 (each with 2 tons of ammo) in the left torso, and an ER Medium Laser on each arm; additionally, a Guardian ECM is carried in the right torso along with a TAG on the right arm. The lack of CASE for the missile ammo is a concern, but the lack of crits in this overpriced 'Mech preclude its addition.
    The second variant I did is the AS7-STRV "Sturmovik" Atlas, although it doesn't differ all that much from the AS7-S. The only change is the downgrade of the twin Streak SRM-2s to standard SRM-2s.
    The final variant I created is the AS-ISM Atlas, probably the most expensive variant I've done - if ComStar C-bills meant anything in the ilClan era, that is. It mounts 16 IS double heat sinks, 17.5 tons of IS Stealth armor - along with the necessary Clan ECM, a compact gyro, an XL engine, and a supercharger. To make it even more odd, the AS-ISM also mounts a *second* ECM, 4 Jump Jets and a partial-wing. For weapons, I went Clantech: each arm mounts a Clan ER Large Laser supported by a Clan ER Medium Pulse Laser. And, honestly, that's all the weapons it has. Other than a Clan LAMS in the head. Probably not my best variant, but I suppose it could be fun.

And one could reasonably argue that it is a more deserving design for that most enviable of meta positions than the two before it. The Warhammer was and still is a good mech, but it was an imported design shuffled to the background because of legal troubles. The Timberwolf was a home grown design, but it is absent from the sphere until the Clan Invasion. But the Atlas? It hasn't been absent once since the twilight Star League introduced it. It has been the peak of attainable dreams for generations of mechwarriors. At 100 tons, it was as giant a robot as you could get for a long time, and even when that cap was broken, superheavies are very rare exceptions.

Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries drew me into the setting like few before or afterward, and the prospect of purchasing an Atlas in the late-game was one of the highlights. I spent hours piecing together all manner of custom laser boats and enjoying the roomy chassis to create the death-dealing mechanical monster that would stomp any Clan invader into scrap. Turning off heat management might have been a contributing factor to those early days where a young man just wanted to blast 'Mechs and wasn't particular about how tactics worked. Equipment:
    Targeting Computer [Clan] (Clan) in the LT
    Active Probe [Clan] (Clan) in the LT
    ECM Suite [Clan] (Clan) in the HD
    Since I didn't have any at the time Clan Endo, and Ferro. I packed the slots as much as I could even with 19.5 tons of armor. I equipped an ECM for more survivability and Active Phobe to see how well the enemy is to make called shots with the Targeting Computer.
    The reason I love this mech so much is because I soloed 3 nightstars, 2 Jade Hawks, on a Last Stand EVAC Mission with some support from a powering-up Spheroid DropShip.
    I was planning in building a Spicy! Quad ER PPCs+Capacitors in the LA&RA. 2 ATM6 in LT&RT with a ton of Standard ammo and ton of High Explosive Ammo in the CT. TarComp in the LT. ECM stay in the HD. Added AMS with a 1on of ammo in the RT, increase Double Heat Sinks to 20 [40] the heat is 71/40! Oh I think It still a lot of tonnage left, I would change the Gyro to a Compact. Giving more space for a DHS. I'm doing this from memory. So someone might need to Validate this for me if this build is possible. :)

      I think it's largely a holdover from some of the original battlemech lineup. It was common for mechs, especially assault mechs, to try and compensate for their lack of mobility by using rear mounted weapons. I think it was somewhat effective back in the day due to lower armor values across the board.
      Some examples include the Battlemaster, Zues, the PPC Banshee variant, Quickdraw, and the Centurion and Wolfhound serving as examples of it happening in light and medium mechs. It also pops up in clan mechs from time to time, though usually only in omnimechs. There's probably more than what I remembered here, but there seems to be a big drop-off of rear weapons after the clan invasion.

    Why do we love The Atlas? Because it's *THE ATLAS!* Who doesn't want to march into battle with 100 tons SLDF butt-kicking? It's the mech that crushed the Amaris Empire beneath its metal heels and it might be the only IS mech of 3050 that the Clans are genuinely afraid of.

    The AS7-RS is my personal favorite, and in my opinion is far more usable in a campaign than the standard D. Also load up the RS with some alternate ammo and it gets really nasty. Precision ammo for that AC10 is nasty, inferno missiles even more so.

    Whenever I hear someone describe the size, weight, and ominous visage of the Atlas, I'm reminded of a quote by Frank Horrigan from Fallout 2: "That's almost as much as yo mamma." Something about the Atlas brings out that kinda brutish sass in me, very fun 'mech.
    Also, you sold me on plasma weaponry in Battletech, gonna see how my local gaming group likes the MF Atlas.

    Happy new year, Mech Frog!
    It occurred to me while looking at the loadout for the MF variant that reactive armour might combine well with plasma rifles - the plasma rifles counter energy-heavy loadouts, while the reactive armour minimizes damage from explosive weapons. I shall have to test this...

    Atlas 2 having its big ballistic on the arm and the lasers in the middle is so weird. The RS and later Kuritan Atlas layout makes more sense. LLs on the arm, AC in the normal spot.

    • @atmosdwagon4656
      @atmosdwagon4656 5 місяців тому +1

      Being able to direct your heaviest weapon anywhere is more useful in MechWarrior than in BattleTech, especially MWO where going for headshots or aiming at high/low elevation targets is a common occurrence.
      That said, I would still run the Kuritan layout with the Large lasers on the arms and the big ballistic in the side torso in MW5, because large lasers are the best "ratting" weapons in that game. (Short Burst LLs are very useful for quickly and decisively swatting vehicles, turrets and VTOLs, where you really want the extra gun traversal and precision. The A.I. is also much better with them than other weapons due to their direct simplicity.)

    • @huntermad5668
      @huntermad5668 5 місяців тому +1

      Not like the extremely common Mad Dog/Vulture didn't have comparable level of firepower to an Atlas at them time.

    • @mwhyte1979
      @mwhyte1979 5 місяців тому

      @@huntermad5668 oh I agree with you but still you have to admit that even in the worst of the initial Clan invasion the Atlas was one of the few inner sphere mech's that had even a chance of standing toe-to-toe against the clans. Also keep in mind that the average Clanner pretty much worshipped General Kerensky and the General while not actually designing and building the Atlas himself was pretty much is responsible for the Atlas coming into being. When you combine the two thoughts together I still think a clan warrior would still be having "oh crap" moments.
