i CERTAINLY APPRECIATE THIS VIDEO! As I am trying to start a like new (still has bright paint on the exhaust) 70s era Craftsman generator and realized it had points. While I have watched my Grandpa do this many times, I had forgotten what a PITA the old style was removing the whole damn flywheel and 3 head bolts just to check the points .

Excellent Video. My snowblower had a 3.5 engine with no spark.
I did not have to replace coil because the points were the issue. I removed them and cleaned the contacts. Ensured all connections were clean and had a good ground.
Put it all back together and runs (almost) like new.
Thanks again for a great video.

Great videos, I have watched many of them. I like to repair the older chainsaws & you were the 1st person I thought of when I ran into this issue. I have a Remington 754 with no spark. Changed on off switch, pulled flywheel & cleaned breaker points, changed condensor with used one from a Homelight XL-12 (not sure how to check these). Also swapped out ignition coil from the same XL. Original coil was the same shape & size, fit great on bracket. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

On your replacement coil (as on mine) your condenser and points wires come out of the coil on the opposite side of the square hole from the original coil. I put the spark plug wire in the same place but had to run the condenser and points wires differently... Have you actually installed a coil with the wires moved like this?

Hey dony, I have a h60 tecumseh. Cleaned and gapped the points. It now idles, but backfires and then stalls when it's at full throttle. I have a new carb on it, and adjusted the screws to no avail. Should I time the engine with a dial indicator, or install new points and condenser? What would you do first? I'm pretty sure it's a timing issue...thanks!

I just got into one of these yesterday with a no spark condition. The points are pretty worn but still gapped. The laminated metal that holds the coil in place had sustained some separation of the laminates on one side of the coil. Any idea if the assembly is still available, Don? It's the 7HP Tecumseh if that matters. I have the Ariens model 924048 and serial 017718, but can't find an engine tag yet. I had marked the assembly before removal, but my question is why is it adjustable? I'm assuming to set the air gap, but haven't found any info as yet on how to accomplish that. Thank you for any advice that you may offer.

No. Yours is just a simple coil. (Electronic ignition). Go to websites such as www. partstree.com and enter your engines model for a complete parts diagram and break dwn. You have it easy. Take a business card put it in between the coil and the flywheel. Tighten your coil. Your done, its set properly and ready to go.

I watched probably 20 YT videos on how to test a coil. I was reading OPEN on all leads from the coil to the "iron core". I finally pulled the coil off of the iron core to see if I could see any damage, and there was none. Then it dawned on me. Why is there 2 small leads on the coil? This coil is not grounded to the "iron core", because it is removeable, so the short second wire is grounded to the condensor. If you read between either of the smaller wires and the plug wire you will read resistance. I think my coil is weak as I am reading 7.5K OHMS, and it has a yellow spark. So I have a new coil ordered. Hope this helps someone.

condenser is to protect the points, and keep them from burning out prematurely.
The condenser is just a little can with a strip of tin foil and a strip of waxed paper, rolled together inside a little can. A wire is attached to the roll of tin foil and the waxed paper is there to separate one roll of the foil from the next one. The condenser is merely a storage room for electrons.

Good video and helpful. Is it normal for the two small wires coming out of the coil to be shorted electrically? I have purchased a new coil and both the old one and the new one are short between the two smaller wires. I see that one goes to the condenser screw and the other connects to the point terminal. I would think this is my non spark causing issue, but I'm skeptical that I recieved a new faulty coil.
