    Did the same thing this week with a 3060. It had gotten so hot there were burn Mark's and factory flux everywhere. Found shorted mosfet, replaced and I can't believe it actually works. One very fortunate kid.

      @@tyrellwreleck4226 if you consider that using a multimeter and power source voltage displayed all the time on the video is the "dumbest comment" then I am not sure what this tell about me but for sure it tells alot about you. Hahaha nice one Sorin, GPUs take away heat very quickly thats why you won't see much on a thermal camera but i would prefer that method of yours of grounding the side where the current leaks through a short, that way the faulty driver will produce more heat.
    Also on removing the driver its better to preheat the board because the gpus take a lot of heat.
    The gpu dont die after a drmos gets shorted because the drivers on the GPUs are controlled by a very intelligent chip that grounds power or sort of produces a short before the gou core and thus preventing the core from getting bust.
    What usually kills the gpu is injecting power using a psu hahahaa those if they see a short they pump current into the short.
    I would like to see a vram case now, thanks Sorin.

    DRMos, they can short to ground, so the 12 volt going to ground, not GPU.
    You should really get a board pre-heater too. Well done thou.

    Actually GPU can be burned. To be sure you need install Windows, driver and do few stress tests (furmark for example). GPU can hang system when you try to install the driver. Without tests you can't be sure it's working or not.

    • @winlose3073
      @winlose3073 Місяць тому +2

      except that it doesn't look like bad heat pattern I believe, you can conclude that the gpu is running and doing something when the heat spreads unifromly on the die cover but if it's like a small dot you know that something there got shorted and is consuming all the power as heat.

    • @kepler104

      @@gorjy9610 its doable but as you can see sorin is mentioning he held his hot air for like 10 mins on the card (probably at 400c+) and still nothing was melting, which is not good for the on board components and the pcb taking the heat.

    hey Sorin, i am also getting into gpu repair and i can tell this.... you need so much crazy heat to remove even tiny components from a card.... always use a preheater big enough for that board you will keep your sanity that way and not overheat other components, especially if you done a leaded solder reball on some parts

  • @someone2506
    @someone2506 Місяць тому +4

    afaik low melt (bismuth based) creates brittle joints if I'm not mistaking and supposedly even much worse when combined with lead (already present or added lead based solder). Additionally even if the melting point is 140° - the alloy might start softening at a lower temp (~ic working temps) which increases the possibility of rapidly accumulating vibration cracks (because in theory it won't reach the melting point and mend the previous cracks)
    No disrespect but i think this not good practice.

    • @batizbalint9947

I took the mosfet out of the board and replaced with new one. With not much hope i put it back if it will work and it was. That GPU still works in younger brothers PC. Amazing what GPUs can handle.

    Not sure but I believe this chip was partially working and able to measure the current using the shunt resistor and cut the power on the GPU and probably it was switching the low side first for testing or something of the kind , because whatever got shorted it must be the high side mosfet I mean it must be having short protection mechanism otherwise the survival of the GPU is inexplicable...
