Seriously, I played for the first time for a couple of hours and I had it figured out in half an hour. Don't worry, just go out and play. The other 3 players know the score.
Great explanation! Today I played with some colleagues for the first time and it sounded so confusing when they were calling it out! Makes sense now! Thanks for posting!
I'm about a month into Pickleball. I've tried to find videos that explain the scoring rules. You guys are thorough but you too are just doing things at times without explaining. Could somebody explain when you can and can't score points. At around the 8:05 mark, the ladies said you'll notice we are both standing back behind the baseline. Yeah I noticed but could you tell us why you're doing it?🤔 Thanks
Thank you! Keeping score has been the hardest part to this game. After watching this a few times, im starting to wrap my head around it. Very informative ty!
I was very confused about pickleball scoring. There was no one that gave me more detailed explanations than you. I'm so grateful that I now fully understand scoring a month after I started playing pickleball.
They do, except for the start of every game... only one player serves in order to make it fair, and so that they don't have too much of an advantage. Imagine playing a game where the starting team player has some great, unreturnable serves, or they are better and they get ahead say, 9-0 before you win a rally, and then the serve switched to the 2nd server... that would be so frustrating! Some pickleballers will call this first score as 0-0-Start, just to avoid confusion. Either call is fine... 0-0-2 or 0-0-Start!
I will have to watch this video twice. pickleball scoring may be "easy" ... but it CERTAINLY is not as easy to understand as ping pong or tennis. It's VERY complex compared to either of those two.
Server 1 and 2 switch after every side out. A side out is when your opponents have lost the serve after both players have served. Here's a video that might help with scoring. ua-cam.com/video/eMEpFipIdrk/v-deo.htmlsi=oF9MLSiIGCvLIhFk If you have a specific question on the video just drop in the time stamp and we'll get it answered.
I had trouble getting the hang of scoring when I first started too. Hang in there it gets easier. Here's a video that will help. ua-cam.com/video/eMEpFipIdrk/v-deo.htmlsi=_rXL4CrEoKrPE-Vd
Here's another video that might help, but don't worry if you don't get it right away, I didn't either. Most players will help you until you get the hang of it. ua-cam.com/video/eMEpFipIdrk/v-deo.htmlsi=_rXL4CrEoKrPE-Vd
So does it mean only the serving side can add points when they win, and the opponent doesn't get any point even if they win this rally if they didn't serve?
New players are often inundated with rules when they first start, so in this video since the two bounce rule doesn't impact how to keep score we chose not to mention it.
What makes it confusing is when the first point of the game was lost by the serving team. Nadine was 0-0-2, but then when it comes back around, she serves again first and this time is 0-5-1. What is the reasoning here? Why if a team doesn’t score a point first, when the serve comes back, the same person starts again? Why when it came back around at 0-5, wasn’t CJ serving? I think the 0-0-2 start when there is a side out makes it confusing the rest of the game. Is it simply to keep the serving count “fair”?
With the exception of the start of the game each side gets to have both players serve. Here’s a video that might help. Pickleball Scoring Basics- Make it Easy with Me, You, Who? ua-cam.com/video/eMEpFipIdrk/v-deo.html
I SO appreciate your instructional video on score keeping! Reading the comments of various people asking their questions only confuses you more so just watch this video and follow it!! This video is accurate score keeping! You guys that are still confused after watching this video, you are making the game of pickleball more difficult keeping score! You guys are making this so difficult when it’s not! 😂😂😂
Too many names of UA-cam channel to get to you. I’m always trying to tell people just look at CJ and Toney’s channels. They always com back, which one.
If tell them to put in cj and tony pickleball in the youtube search bar you should see both channels, Better Pickleball and In2pickle. Thanks for sharing!
Nope. Your partner can stand where they would like. But if you know that the return teams objective is to return deep than strategically it's smarter to stand behind the baseline.
I am new to pickleball and did a few searches to understand the scoring vs position of the players. I have looked at a few videos and it wasn't totally clear how it works after having seeing them. Your video is perfect to teach us that. Thanks!
Help me out here, at 14:43 the score is 1-10-1. CJ starts the serve, but then misses the ball that Gary hits which lands in bounds at 14:57. At 15:00 Tony says the score is 1-10-2 in favor of the men? Why did the guys get that point? The ball hit by Gary was in, was it not? Why did the serving team (ladies) get the point on a ball that was in fair play? I'm confused.
The only rule that says where you have to stand is for the server. Essentially behind the baseline and in between an extension of the side and centerlines at the point of contact.
Running into an growing number of people complaining about not being able to track the trajectory of the pickleball because of it's color - indoors and outdoors. Is this something you guys are aware of?
I'm not aware of anything new. Indoors it is usually more difficult because of floor and wall colors. I know that personally this time of year, (I play on a shaded court and the sun is lower in the horizon) I have a hard time tracking the ball later in the day. There are a lot of different colors so if one doesn't work give another a try.
I think I’m getting the scoring when it comes to playing doubles. Also whenever you start a serve it always starts on the right before you get to switch places (assuming you scored) ? So if a side out happen and it’s your opponent’s serve (server 1) they start on the right side to serve cross court ? (Hope this question makes sense)
What I don't understand is what if you get a point (server 1) and then you serve from the other side and do not get the point. How do you know what side the second server serves from?
When a side-out occurs, whichever player on the (now) serving team is on the right side will become server 1, even though they may have been server 2 in prior side-outs.
Love most of your videos, but this one is simply not well done. As a teacher and a student, I think you have over-explained and made scoring pretty confusing. I have specific suggestions should you ever want to discuss. Keep up the videos!
Pickleball is a great game and my middle school students loved this game in our PE class. However, we modified to a simpler serving and scoring system. A player serves until they fault and then the serve goes to the other team but a point is scored on every rally (rally scoring). When the other team faults the person who did not serve on the last rally serves starting from the right. We play to 21 win by two or the first to 25. Very simple and easy way to teach it to beginners.
I thought I would enjoy this game but the scoring drives me crazy. Too much thinking instead of hitting the ball 😂
Thanks for the feedback Ray
I agree. I have looked at various scoring videos and get more confused.

the best explanation so far.
Glad it was helpful!
Been playing a few months... ex tennis player. I do like rally scoring
I like it too.
That even odd number explanation was confusing.

Great job explaining the score and serving rules. Best and easiest video i have seen so far.🤟
Awesome, thank you!
This was the best video explaining scoring and positioning. I now get it. I'm not sure why others didn't like it. Thank you for the step by step.
That's why we make a lot of different videos on the same topic. What resonates with one doesn't necessarily resonate with another.

Have fun!
So does it mean only the serving side can add points when they win, and the opponent doesn't get any point even if they win this rally if they didn't serve?
Correct, only the serving team can score points in a game that uses traditional scoring.
I've heard/read/watched that to start the game the first team only gets one person to serve before a side out, true?
That is correct
Pictur went out after awhile did the camera or phone fall🤔
No video playback issues that I can see. You may want to try again.
Thank you! Great video

At 2:35 was your foot in the kitchen? And if so, was that allowed?
I think the camera makes it looks my foot was on the line. If it was, and it was close. I hit a volley so no it would not be legal.
Well done. Clarified scoring with great show and tell.
Glad it was helpful.
Very good, just starting to wrap my head around this.
