Thanks Mike, u made my childhood age look fun. U were my role model including Ras kimono, majek fashek etc. I used to sing all their songs in those days
You no tire? I don't understand why we are so quick to put down people in our culture. It's a legitimate job for crying out loud. Beyond that, there aren't that many jobs within our own country so why are we thumbing our noses at washing dishes?
Great guy, Mike Okri. Very well-spoken. The interviewer needs a bit more of exposure and learn to rid himself of bias of what it means to drive a taxi in the US. People feed their families and put themselves through college doing that and many are college graduates.
I do remember when he visited his sister in our compound in Warri. He came with members of his band and he greeted us as children in Urhobo language. He is a humble and nice guy.
Seriously dislike the line of questioning and mentality of the interviewer. He makes so many presumptions about Mike's experience and is rather disrespectful. I am not even a micro-celebrity and I would have stopped that punk dead in his tracks from the get. Mike's so patient.
For many African people, colonial mentality teaches them that washing dishes or cab driving is a low job - but sitting in an office with a long tie is all you need. But, unfortunately, it's not so in the Western world as in Europe, everyone can work as a dish washer... If you are a motor, or motorcycle mechanic in Nigeria, you're looked down on - if you have the opportunity of becoming a car mechanic here in Europe, then, you're richer than Nigerian Senators!!
It shouldn't even be about money or status, the main thing is earning an honest living. Our culture encourages taking short cuts which invariably leads to criminal behaviour.
I appreciate his honesty and modesty! Thumbs up Mike!
Very sound interview. Mike Okri is very eloquent...and calm too. Well done, and I appreciate your contributions to the Nigerian music scene.

If those jobs are respected in the western world, then it's not colonial mentality; it's Nigeria's mentality.
