The name of the song is "Metali" It's a portmanteau of the worlds "metal" and "matsuri" (a traditional Japanese festival), so the song title can be interpreted as meaning metal festival.
The instrument that you thought sounded Indian is a Shamisen, which is a traditional three stringed Japanese instrument. There is no Indian influence in this song at all, it's all Japanese traditional elements.
Babymetal is just the three young ladies up front. The backing musicians that play with them at live shows are called the Kami Band (Kami are gods or spirits in the Japanese Shinto religion), but they are not considered to be part of Babymetal.
Tom Morello is most well known for being the guitarist of Rage Against the Machine and he is particularly known for his unique playing style and use of the whammy pedal to create very different sounds on a guitar. The solo at the end of the song was Tom's contribution to the song. Unfortunately he has yet to perform it live with Babymetal, so on this occasion it was just Babymetal with the Kami Band playing and Tom was on a back track and shown on the screen behind.
I've been in the crowd a few times for Metali and it's always a blast. Although at my age I find getting low and then getting up again is a bit of challenge! 🤣
That was the live performance audio in the video. That was all captured at NEX_FEST in Japan in November 2023. They are just that good live.
Babymetal are touring the US in November, but they aren't visiting Texas on this trip unfortunately.
Babymetal shows are famous for their walls of death and circle pits, but as pits go Babymetal's are pretty friendly because Babymetal is all about good vibes.

@@Icipher353 The bulk of their touring schedule in the U.S. is typically very late summer into mid-fall. Summer (May-July) is festival season, which they did several this year. Japan's worst months are July & August when it's super hot and humid, so they take those off to rest and recharge before they come out for the U.S. tour from Sept. thru late-October/early-November.
I think this year's tour is different because A LOT of people comment on their posts on social media about how they never go to some places, so they're hitting up some usual places, but some others had to be kind of dropped this time to substitute in those other ones. Like instead of Austin, I think they're doing OKC and Albuquerque this year. I am bummed they're not coming to Boston, but they typically hit us on the main tour when they release an album. I'm toying with the idea of going to NYC or D.C. this time to see them.

One of the most important moments in their early career, it is fantastic for the music, and maybe even more so for the story of how a group of high-school aged girls leading a rock band got bumped from a side stage to the main stage at this massive festival and performed for 55,000 hardcore UK metal heads most of whom had no idea who Babymetal were, and they killed it.

@@JakobFischer60 It doesn't. This is a 100% "matsuri" (traditional Japanese festival) influenced song. Even the name "Metali" is the combination of "metaru" (metal) and "matsuri". The supposed "indian" influence has no sense here. They actually have an Indian influenced song, "Shanti shanti shanti", just in case you want to see the differences.

@@traylor2502 There is a lot of backing track here, almost certainly including Tom Morello's part, the shamisen (the twangy sounds) and most of the backing vocals. BABYMETAL tour with good musicians, but there are only four of them. There are limits to what they can reproduce on stage, so any important melodic/rhythmic parts they can't do will be on a track. At their own shows they will use as many tracks as they need, but festivals can be more limited, hence the very raw sound you get from those shows. The audience is there for the show, not to see a garage band.

Unfortunately I couldn't find a clear video of the guitarists in the short time. I have also found differences in the solos, for example "Babymetal - Metali ! (Legend MM 2024 Live) Eng Subs" at 5:59 - 6:01 there is a clear difference compared to others. If you check their solos at the start it's clear that two guitarists and even the bassist (who is originally a guitarist) could play Morello's solos with reproducing the same sound type.

This was actually live audio - as you might have guessed from the crowd interaction in the middle. :-) But it‘s an official release, so the audio has certainly been touched-up and little mistakes removed. Su, the main singer, does have a very stable voice, but she is not perfect. You‘ll get a handful of little instabilities over the course of a show.
BTW, they do actually have a Bollywood inspired song / video, the song is called „Shanti, shanti, shanti“. Most of their songs have some sort of influence from other genres and cultures in some form. That’s one reason why they never get boring.

Bit of background on Babymetal for you . They've been going since 2010 and as Su-Metal the lead vocalist is 26 that gives you an idea of how young they were when they started . The 3 ladies are Babymetal and the band behind then is the Kami Band ( an often rotating group of the best session musicians in the business )
In the 14 years these ladies have earned the respect and admiration of their peers in the Metal world and have either toured with , opened for or collaborated with some bands you might just know - Metallica , GunsN'Roses , Korn , RHCP , Sabaton , Bring Me The Horizon , Rob Halford ( Judas Priest ) , Tom Morello , Electric Callboy to name but a few . All this in addition to their own sold out World Tours where they regularly play to audiences of 20k+ and appearances at some of the world's biggest festivals like Glastonbury , Download and Hellfest .
This collaboration isn't particularly typical of their catalogue - it's more for audience participation purposes .
IMHO their best ( and heaviest ) collaboration is with Bring Me The Horizon " Kingslayer - ua-cam.com/video/hb2mMVdx1KU/v-deo.html
but their solo stuff is very much worth delving into - you'll be surprised !

Welcome to the Foxhole or just another way to say BabyMetal's journey.🦊🤘🔥
Always glad to see more reactors and a family getting into this amazing group.
Lemme help you with a basic info about them:
BabyMetal is a Japanese metal dance unit created in 2010 under another Jpop/Jrock group called Sakura Gakuin, they had 11 and 12 years old when started this and become independent after 2013, they created their own genre called kawaii-metal (kawaii means cute) mixing Jpop with metal sound and different subgenres along with many more rhythms. Their name is a reference to a new genre and not related to their ages or "baby" faces, is a pun intended play words with "heavy-metal" which sounds similar to "baby-metal".
    They are:
    *SuMetal* lead vocalist, now 26.
*MoaMetal* scream and dance, now 25.
*MomoMetal* scream and dance, she's 21 and is the new official member since April 1st last year.
-YuiMetal- scream and dance, former member since 2018.
    None of them are related.
After 2018 you'll see backup dancers performing but none of them are official members, they don't sing, only dance, but remember that status changed last year.
    About this song:
We got another banger for Japanese festival or any festival around, they performed this at the recent World Tour 2023/2024 and getting the crowd going bonkers with this.
There's a live proshot version at Summer Sonic Festival in Osaka released in the official summer sonic but it's heavily blocked, luckily we got this new proshot version live at NEX_FEST 2023 Festival in Japan (a festival held by BMTH, that's why you can see Japanese as well foreign fans). You'll notice some slight difference between the live and the studio album, but this version is definitely live sound.
The song title is Metali!! (metal + matsuri, which is a Japanese festival) and you can hear it in the spoken section when MomoMetal is doing the Kabuki moves style.
Just so you know "wasshoi" is another shout used in Japanese festivals when men are carrying the shrine, similar to sore and soya in Megitsune and Karate. The traditional Japanese instrument you can hear in the beginning is a shamizen, also used in Megitsune. There's no Bollywood stylye here maybe the song with that vibes is Shanti Shanti Shanti which clearly got Indian influences as well dance choreo.
I can totally see why they pick Tom Morello on this, he's the one showing at the end wearing a hat, he's a guitar legend known from mythical bands such Rage Against The Machine among others, you can also spot him at Guitar Hero videogames as the final boss on certain songs. The groove, the catchiness, the super energetic jump and those typical 90's vibes at funk or alternative metal live concerts is what they got here.
I'm gonna try to leave in my next comment where to get more proshot clips safe to react if YT allows me to do it.
    Meanwhile next suggestion:
    - *Road Of Resistance* live in Japan official MV (2015).
Thanks for sharing this and see you next time.🦊🤘🎸

      - Doki Doki Morning, official MV, their very first song and MV full of kawaiiness, usually is safe to react so try it, if you want a live performance, this is the first proshot version with the Kami Band live at Legend 1999 (YuiMetal and MoaMetal 14th birthday).
      ua-cam.com/video/BSjv9OYtWZ0/v-deo.html
      - Uki Uki Midnight, this one is a follow up to Doki Doki Morning but way different sound, this is the PV, is super fun but the sound isn't so great but at least is live.

If you want better sound with the Kami Band, then live at Budokan 2014 it is.
      ua-cam.com/video/ESzY9dL613Q/v-deo.html
      - Onedari Daisakusen, live at Legend 1997, this is a Black Babymetal song, is a subgroup with only YuiMetal and MoaMetal.
      ua-cam.com/video/1dT1ywYR5So/v-deo.html
      - Iine! again official MV hits way better but if you want live, here live at Budokan 2014.
      ua-cam.com/video/5sCvYVNeD0w/v-deo.html
      - Karate live at Download Festival 2016, "kitsune6001" got this with a short interview intro.
      ua-cam.com/video/FKOL6v3Md2c/v-deo.html
      - Road Of Resistance live in Japan official live MV, be careful with the blocked by putting some filters just in case.
      ua-cam.com/video/zTEYUFgLveY/v-deo.htmlsi=BsVOSExS25Qndy1H
      - Kimi To Anime Ga Mitai - Answer For Animation With You, live at Budokan 2014, not sure if it's still safe, so try some filters, if is audio blocked try to mute or just cut the parts.
      ua-cam.com/video/M8FKumvh-w8/v-deo.html
Here's a song you can find at Babymetal Reactor Resource (BMRR), a helpful place to get watermarked logo clips of the original live version to curve the annoying algo.
      - GJ! live at Wembley Arena 2016, another Black Babymetal song.

No, not east Indian music nor Ballywood. To those not familiar with east Asian music the first association they make is to India, The opening instrument sound and musical references are Japanese inspired. The "dramatic" break in the middle of the song with the large gestures of the arms, head, and body is taken directly from Kabuki theater traditions as well as Su and Moa pretending to play drums as they kneel down.

Great first reaction! 🤘🦊🤘 Thank you for giving BABYMETAL a chance!!! BABYMETAL is a Japanese kawaii (cute) metal group (a metal subgenre that they created) that formed in 2010 when the 3 girls were 11-12 years old (yes, they were very young), and since then have performed with, toured with, or opened for Metallica, Korn, Sabaton, Bring Me The Horizon, Dragonforce, Guns N' Roses, Lady Gaga, Rob Halford of Judas Priest (there's a great youtube video of their performance with Rob at a metal award show), and Red Hot Chili Peppers (there is a youtube video of them performing Gimme Chocolate with RHCP, as well as with Korn, and DragonForce), to name a few of many. They have performed at large metal events/concerts in front of 65,000+ skeptical metalheads in Europe (Download, Sonisphere, Glastonbury, etc), US, and Asia. They are the first Japanese band to perform at Wembley arena in the UK. Also, 20+ awards have been given to them. They have 60+ songs and each one is different from the other, so I hope you give the other songs a try. By the way, they have some really great heavy songs too, and I hope you like guitar solos, as well as bass and drum solos, like I do, because they have them too. Also, they released a new amazing album last year and they just finished a world tour where they had many shows here in the US. They also recently released the music video for "RATATATA" which is a collab with Electric Callboy! 🤘🦊🤘

They have four songs with an English version: Believing, Elevator Girl, From Dusk Till Dawn, and The One. And with all their songs, subtitles are recommended even with English versions lol (especially From Dusk Till Dawn, you'll see why when you watch it lol).
You have four albums to search through but the comment section is your friend lol. The Babymetal fans know which videos are best, which my opinion 98% are (there is only one or two I don't care for).
And I'm only seeing four BM videos on your channel but I hope there are a lot more to come, I always enjoy seeing new fans react.
Also, there are "Babymetal Guide" videos here on UA-cam that provide insight on how they came to be, which are fun to watch. there are four or so, and depending on which one you watch they provide mostly same info just updated or other info not included in others.
Hope you have a great time reacting to more Babymetal in the hopefully near future.

Welcome to Foxhole & Thanks again from Japan 有難う 💛。The title is a synthesized word from two words : "Metal" and "Matsuri (= festival)" → Metali.
The repetitive わっしょい "Wasshoi" is a call or yell used in Japanese festival to stoke people's exhilaration and especially to encourage the power of guys who are carrying a heavy Mikoshi (神輿) on their shoulders that is a kind of a float in Western style festivals.
The audience did get low at every venue in the world, because no one can resist following our Queen's direction. 😄 (Then they jump up from crouching posture like spring ejectors after Momoko's "Are you ready ?".)
Momometal's extravagant elocution and moves in Kabuki style and her growl gave an amazing accent in the exciting repetitiveness.

The traditional instrument you hear that makes you think of "eastern music" is a shamisen. I imagine that at some level traditional Japanese and Indian music share some ancestral threads. If you want to hear a Babymetal take on actual Indian "Bollywood" check out the song "Shanti Shanti Shanti", it was on an album they released where they played around with various global influences:

Yeah, Babymetal is a different kind of beast. When Yui-metal, Moa-metal, and Su-metal started they were just kids, singing and dancing in front of a "band" that only pretended to play their instruments. Then they got the Kami band as a backing band, some of the best musicians in Japan, and they really took off. Nowadays they are backed by another group of very talented musicians. Yui left the band some years ago, and was later replaced by Momo-metal. They are awesome live, and have done some pretty cool collabs, with, for example, Joakim Brodén of Sabaton, Alissa White-Gluz of Arch Enemy, and Electric Callboy. If you don't smile when you listen to the latter, you might want to go see a doctor, because your face may be paralyzed ua-cam.com/video/ChmVcJK7N-c/v-deo.html

They just dropped a new song "Willshine" on youtube a day ago. Worth checking that out, or one of my personal favs, "Taking You Out".

Great first reaction and welcome to the BABYMETAL Foxhole.🦊Most of the important things you might need to know at this point have already been explained by jakemuller8626, alastairmcintyre4752, Ganimal83 and a couple more ... unfortunately I can't help adding more, sorry for the wall of text I'm about to write.
This song is a fun, summer festival sing and dance along. It is all Japanese though right from the shamisen (traditional 3 string instrument) being plucked all the way through to the shouts of "Wasshoi", "Dokkoisho" and "Sore" that you would hear at Japanese summer festivals encouraging people carrying heavy floats and shrines.
The song is about a Metal village holding a Metal festival and there is something in the lyrics and in Momometal's Kabuki Theatre section about we are all fools - the fools who dance and the fools who watch. So as we are all fools and we are all here we may as well all dance.
This was the live audio. With the official videos if they include the word "Live" in the title they have used the live audio. If it doesn't say "Live" it may have been filmed at a live concert but the audio will be from the studio recording dubbed over the live footage.
BABYMETAL sound better live than they do in the studio - the first couple of albums especially were over-produced, compressing the vocals in particular. Also you will only ever hear their live backing band (the Kami Band) in live shows, they do not record the studio versions.
The Kami Band first appeared in October 2012 (2 years after BABYMETAL formed). Without the Kami Band in the early days, before they had any budget for a live band, they would sing and dance to pre-recorded instrumentals and in concerts guys dressed in skeleton suits (called Babybones) would dance around waving guitars and drumsticks.
The Kami Band were phased in over about 18 months playing a couple of festivals and the encores in some concerts and they became the full time support for all live shows from March 2014.
The Kami Band are all male (there was a female violinist for a handful of shows in 2013) and they were the very best session musicians to be found in Japan. There have been many Kami Band members as they would swap out depending on their availability (they have their own bands, projects and families etc)but the same hard core of about 6 musicians played the vast majority of concerts from March 2014 through to January 2023.
In 2019 the Kami Band of the West (American musicians Chris Kelly, CJ Masciantonio, Clint Tustin and Anthony Barone) were introduced to support BABYMETAL on their increasingly lengthy foreign tours. They have been ever present since 1st April 2023 (bassist Clint Tustin has been touring with his own band and he has bee been substituted for Ryan Neff when that happens).
I hope you will explore more BABYMETAL. They have about 70 songs now, each one different to the last, they will surprise you nearly every time - just expect the unexpected.
Su-metal is the lead vocalist, so she does the vast bulk of the vocals, but Moametal and Momometal are fine singers and they do get their moments - but make no mistake, they are crucial to what BABYMETAL do and what sets them apart. Their main focus is the choreo and crowd engagement - it is their lines and chants etc that the crowd will sing along with and when they jump, pump a fist or whatever the crowd take their cue from them.
Try 'Megitsune' live at PIA Arena April 2023 for a song (and performance) that represents BABYMETAL probably as well as any.
You mistook this for the sound of Bollywood ... as you know now it is all Japanese (no absolutely no relation to KPop either - it upsets some of the Japanese fans when westerners mix them up), but if you do want to hear how well they pay homage to Indian music and possibly Bollywood then 'Shanti Shanti Shanti' (latest live performance just uploaded on who? channel) should go on your list too.

    • @MrsRealistic

Thank you! Yes I didn't know that K-pop was Chinese and that the Japanese version was J-pop! I think people assume that just because I'm going to check out a song, I know everything about music 🤣 I'm just a kid who was raised in Canada and now lives in Texas. I hadn't heard any bands from Asia until a few years ago!

    • @Grington300
      @Grington300 5 місяців тому +3

@@MrsRealistic KPop is Korean (I think China may have such a thing as CPop). I am no expert either, but the first letter denotes the country of origin - and despite basically being "pop" they do differ from each other in one way or another.
KPop is better known in the west because it is aimed mainly at the American market, so you're not the first and won't be the last to think KPop just covers pop music from Asia as a whole.
JPop pre-dates them all I think, but is less well known in the west because Japan has a huge music market of its own so that was always the main focus.
I hope people don't expect you to know everything when you check out a song, but not mixing up the nationalities is probably wise. Historically they haven't always got on very well and being mistaken for each other upsets some people.
Apologies for another wall of text, I'll try to keep it shorter in future.😁

This song is central to Japanese culture and has nothing to do with K-POP. Japan has always been a Hindu and Buddhist culture, so there is some Indian influence, but this song is a festival music for Shinto, so I feel there is less Indian influence. And above all, it is interesting that it incorporates Kabuki.

Great reaction ladies, and welcome to Babymetal! The song title is "Metali" and it's a made up word mash of Metal + Matsuri (Festival). Tom Morello is the lead guitarist for Rage Against the Machine, and he was on the big screen, and contributed the guitar solos. The audio is actually live from this show, which is Summer Sonic 2023 in Japan. The traditional instrument at the begining is a Shamisen, and this song is done in traditional Japanese Festival song style, so 100% Japanese culture, despite it sounding somewhat like "Bollywood".
Despite the oldest member being 26, Babymetal are 14-year veterans and are absoltuely incredible! They've easily became my favorite live band! Also, they are very family friendly. All their content are positive and uplifiting, and never anything "suggestive". Only time they even have any "adult" language is from other artists they collab with.
Suggestions - Not sure what you two like, but here are a few:
*Megitsune (Pia Arena MM):* A recent performance of this classic fan favorite. It's an upbeat yet deep song empowering girls to shed the restrictive traditional expectations and to be themselves.
*Monochrome (Pia Arena MM):* A heartfelt, and melodic song, yet heavy.
*Road of Resistance (Official Live):* An epic battle anthem, and a Jan 2015 performance.
*Headbanger (Legend 1997):* A quintessential classic, and an amazing performance from Dec 2013's show celebrating lead Su-metal's 16th birthday.

The strange instrument you hear in background is known as a shemisen - a Japanese guitar-like instrument. It is played with a device that looks like a car snow scraper; the corner of it is used as a pick. This was an odd song to introduce you to this band. The girls are marketed as Babymetal. The band (known as the Kami band) is a group of anonymous session musicians - best in the world. Tom Morello was the guy in the background; he’s from Rage Against the Machine. Done everything right, right from the beginning... chose a LIVE video, and NOT "Gimme Chocolate!!" official video 🤣 Don´t do "Gimme Chocolate!!" yet, do it (much) later, pls! You´re not prepared for it now, believe us!
BABYMETAL is enjoyed best in a live situation. They are INCREDIBLE live. Whatever else was suggested to you, try to find a LIVE version.
    - Road of Resistance
would be another nice choice to react to. Either do the "Live in Japan (OFFICIAL)" version (from 2015), or the live at "PIA Arena Clear Night 2023" version.
    - Monochrome live from the "PIA Arena Clear Night 2023" concert would be another suggestion.
For "Bollywood" style music, do a reaction to "Shanti Shanti Shanti" (named "Shanti x3" by fans) from BABYMETAL. Although it is definetly not meant as "Bollywood style", as the ladies and their songwriting team do show utmost respect to other cultures, you´ll definetly recognize India in it 😉
There´s a channel whose name begins with "For The" and ends with "Fox God" which contains a really recent LIVE performance of "Shanti x3", from the "Legend MM 2024" concert, which you should try, if you want to listen to BABYMETAL doing kawaii metal with an Indian vibe.
P.S.: the BABYMETAL pits are mostly circle pits, and they are "friendly mosh pits" ("mosh´sh´ pit"), and BABYMETAL fans are in their majority friendly, loving and caring people. You won´t be hurt in a BABYMETAL circle pit, other than by pure accident.

@@MrsRealistic "Official Videos" are often live footage with studio audio unless Live is in the title, so they are generally disliked. For Gimme Choco, and pretty much any of their older songs I'd recommend their recent Legend MM 2024 concerts.
The idea of a 'friendly mosh pit' is only true in Japan, I came out with massive bruises from the last BM concert.

Japanese people value the uniqueness of their country's traditions and culture and are very proud of it.
It is not our intention for our music to be confused with Korean or Indian music.
We would appreciate it if you could avoid spreading incorrect perceptions through reaction shows.

They clearly take bits and pieces of many types of music. If you listen to Bollywood music, it is very similar to many aspects of this song, that's all I was mentioning. Cultures share with other cultures. Heavy metal is not unique to Japan...it originated in the UK and US in the late 60's/early 70's, yet all countries play heavy metal and rock. There's nothing wrong with fusing different flavors of music. It's not spreading misinformation to point out something that's similar. I thought this song was fantastic! I never said anything disparaging about it. Sorry you took it that way. Blessings to you :)

      @@MrsRealistic I agree with you.
In that regard, please consider Road of Resistance".
=> When BABYMETAL first started in 2013, the lead singer was 12, the other two were 11. The pop world accepted them whole-heartedly, but the Heavy Metal World - not so much. in some cases, they were shouted at since cutsey young girls could not be accepted in metal. They even had things thrown at them. But as you will eventually find out, these girls are very strong at heart and convictions, they continued to perform in metal festivals for three years until in 2014 @ Sonisphere (England), they were accepted by a huge crowd of 60,000 metalheads. This spread all over the world of metal and back to Japan, so is referred to (in Japan) as the "Reverse-imported Band".
The theme of this song is,"If you believe in something, don't let anything get in your way. If no path, create your own." => check out "BABYMETAL - Road of Resistance - Live in Japan (OFFICIAL)"
