A vastly overlooked band in my opinion. They are flat out awesome!
Got to spend an afternoon with Pat (drummer, RIP) and Paul (guitarist) and they had me in tears laughing almost the whole time. 2 great guys as well as musicians.
That's awesome! Saw them in Buffalo at a charity event, not long after Lean Into It came out. Eric Martin chatted with us for several minutes. Seemed like a really nice and down to earth guy.
Hey T, I knew you'd like it. Mr Big got their name from the song Mr Big by Free, which featured Paul Rodgers on vocals and Simon Kirke on drums. Rodgers and Kirke then formed Bad Company. Billy Sheehan plays bass like Eddie Van Halen plays guitar LoL 🤣. Their biggest hit To Be With You, came from their 2nd album Lean Into It in 1991. It was a ballad. If you see anyone react to Mr Big, it's usually to that song, and it's a shame. They have 9 albums. Their last album was Defying Gravity in 2017. Unfortunately, drummer Pat Torpey (Impellitteri, Ted Nugent, etc) died from complications to Parkinson's in 2018. They didn't really change their sound. They just kept doing what they do, making solid rock n roll albums. They're big in Japan.

If you're gonna delve into this type of thing, I would totally recommend Extreme "Get The Funk Out". 80' hair-bands bring me back to a golden era, where I thought heavy metal was bands like Firehouse, Slaughter, Motley Crüe, etc. Then, I heard the likes of Metallica, Megadeth, and Pantera, which forever redefined heavy metal, in my mind. It was mind blowing! But I still love "my" original "heavy metal" lol, to this day. Great reaction as always. Salute!
this is Billy Sheehans band. he is the most amazing bassist around (my opinion only) Mr Big is defunct but they stayed very consistent till their drummer passed. their big radio hit was "to be with you" Billy currently plays for The Winery Dogs AND Sons of Apollo. both intense heavy rock bands. plus he has guested on many albums over the years...

They did an admirable cover of "30 Days In The Hole," too. Great sound.
This was on their debut album and this song was a big hit on MTV. Great album, but their second album, "Lean Into It", is even better. "Green Tinted Sixties Mind" has such a feel to it. A ballad with a great intro is "Just Take My Heart". Many bangers on it!
"Lean Into It" is my favorite album from them (I bought the 30th anniversary version that came out last year) followed by "Hey, Man." The writing improved so much between the 1st and 2nd albums.
Billy Sheehan is the Van Halen of bass players
They had a new album a few years ago. They are also currently touring. I'll be going to see them in Minneapolis in February (2024).
RIP Pat Torpey.
Eric is one of the most underrated vox ever. But Japan loved him so much.

Bass player Billy Sheehan used to be in a band called Talas. He wrote a song called Shy Boy. It was later re-recorded by David Lee Roth when he played there and Mr. Big plays it live as well. There are a very great live version of Shy Boy (Budokan 2009) by Mr. Big. Paul Gilbert and Sheehan plays up to each other. Fun fact about their second album Lean Into It. There were two very big radio hits on that album. To Be With You and Just Take My Heart. A lot of people heard these two songs and bought the album and the rest of it were very heavy. Not what most people expected. Sheehan also played on the album Masque by japanese guitarist Kuni Takeuchi. Check out Telepathy

I've always loved this band Mr Big they were a super group I think they got a song called to be with you but it's a slower song and I like it great reaction T 🔥🔥🔥🔥☮️♥️💯 and that bass player is awesome he can play that bass like electric guitar lead guitar

I saw you do Winger, now Mr. Big....this is my generation man... and kinda forgotten artists. I have one for you, Mean Streak by Y&T the 1983 official video. Savatage Hall of the Mountain King was another of my favorites. Great white had several hits (Lady Red Light). Man these are the days of cruisin' around with 3 boxes of cassettes in the car. As Axe would sing, "Knock down, drag out, rock n roll parties in the street!"

Heard of Mr. Big, and probably heard a few tunes of theirs but I couldn't name them to save my life.
Billy Sheehan, and Steve Harris were always my fave bassists.
Eric Martin is one of the greatest vocalist of the era. I’ve been a fan since I first hear him in the Eric Martin Band. Billy Sheehan on bass is a legend. He played with just about everybody in the ‘80s and ‘90s. And Paul Gilbert is an incredibly gifted shredder and composer. The drummer, Pat Torpey is the one I know the least about. They are great individually and great as a band. For pure Paul Gilbert shredding, check out his stuff with the band Racer X and his solo stuff. Here’s one example. Technical Difficulties.

Paul Gilbert, the guitarist is considered one of the best guitarists in the world and of all time. That dude can play anything, no matter what genre. I'm such a huge fan of his.. He's insane

Mr. Big would have been wanted to be remembered by songs like 'Addicted to that rush' (Coincidentally, they opened for Rush in 1990 - Geddy Lee reportedly thanked Mr. Big personally for bringing so many girls to their shows 😍) Once their single 'To be with you' was such a huge hit in 1991, they became pegged as a ballad band.
There was potential when Mr. Big came together around 1988... their first album dropped in 1989 and became huge in Japan before America. Mr. Big had guitarist Paul Gilbert (from the thrash metal band Racer-X)... bassist Billy Sheehan (who had played in David Lee Roth's solo band w/ Steve Vai)... vocalist Eric Martin, and drummer Pat Torpey.
2nd album 'Lean into it' (1991) became Mr. Big's biggest record, selling platinum (1 million copies) in the US and became a massive hit worldwide... In Japan, they were superstars. Their ballad 'To be with you' became their biggest single. However, the band felt they were more than that 1 single throughout their career.
3rd album 'Bump ahead' in 1993 was not a huge commercial success in the US in the wake of 90's grunge rock, but it sold remarkable worldwide... Their cover of Cat Steven's ballad 'Wild world' became another huge single... 4th album 'Hey man' (1996) was a melodic rock record, but the band was starting to be creatively frustrated, playing commercial rock when they were capable of more... Guitarist Paul Gilbert quit the band soon after.
Ex-Poison guitarist Richie Kotzen joined Mr. Big and recorded 2 albums - 'Get over it' (1999) and 'Actual size' (2001)... but bassist Billy Sheehan was becoming increasingly frustrated w/ the band's music and finally opted to break up the band after the tour.
In 2009, the original Mr. Big (Gilbert, Sheehan, Martin & Torpey) finally reunited after putting their differences aside, recording and releasing the 'What if' album in 2010... However, drummer Pat Torpey was diagnosed w/ Parkinson's disease, and so session drummers had tp be used for touring... 'The stories we could tell' was the next album in 2014... Mr. Big recorded their final studio album 'Defying gravity' (2017) w/ drummer Matt Starr playing for the ailing Pat Torpey.
Sadly, Pat Torpey passed away in 2018 😪(R.I.P.)
Mr. Big has not announced any more plans since the death of Pat Torpey... it's unlikely they will do anything more.
Paul Gilbert (guitar) has released a number of solo records... Billy Sheehan has been busy working w/ former Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy, including the prog band Sons of Apollo, and rock trio The Winery Dogs w/ former Mr. Big guitarist Richie Kotzen on guitar/vocals... Eric Martin (vocals) has been playing Mr. Big songs as a solo act in concert.
I was at that concert and this was the last song they played before Rush came on
These guys didn't change their sound very much. When you hear a Mr. Big song from any album you know its them

Guitarist Paul Gilbert and his wife created a lot of cover song videos during the pandemic.
He and Billy were a perfect match -- each one encapsulated the shredding mindset of their respective instruments. The only pairing of this type that was as good as this was Billy with Steve Vai.
You need to check out Mr. Big live in San Francisco. Your Daddy, Your Brother, Your Lover and your Little Boy song.
Eric Martin's voice is Fire. Paul's and Billy's guitar playing, on point. The drumming of Pat's, Incredible!! Check out MR. BIG "To Be With You". RIP Pat.

I always loved this band, even if I wasn't a huge "hair metal" fan. They had catchy songs and could play their asses off.
They came out at JUST the wrong time in rock history. Their 1991 album "Lean into it" was even better than this album (Mr. Big, their first release). They put out 4 really good albums, Mr. Big, Lean into it (their probable best), Bump Ahead (great record) and Hey Man (last one with Paul Gilbert). The band continued on without the guitarist Paul Gilbert until around 2002, but disbanded.
In 2009 they got back together with Paul and did a live concert DVD "Back to budokon" If you'd like to see how their music progressed and want to hear the best of their stuff all in one show, go get this DVD and watch it!!!

Eric Martin=vocal. Great singer, kicked around for a long time looking for the right band (he DID have the Eric Martin Band of course) Was auditioned for Toto at one point!
Pat Torpey= as other guys mentioned, he'd played for some great bands as a hired gun, but came into his own in this band.
Paul Gilbert= guitar. Was in a band called RacerX before this, basically an accurate speed-demon who is, and always has been, the most enthusiastic guy about the guitar you will ever encounter! HA! Left Mr. Big in 1996 and has made a number of solo albums that sadly only guitar dweebs know much about. There's been some great tracks on those (look up "Let that Battery Die", "Rusy old Boat" and "Going down to Mexico for examples).
I got to take my son to see the original lineup at the House of Blues in 2011 when they came around for their tour of their first album after reuniting "what if". That was a GREAT show and we were happy to see it before the drummer succomed to Parkinsons disease in 2018.
I lived in Japan for many years and these guys were and are wildly popular there.

Love your channel. Love Mr Big. I requested one of their songs one time with Tasha streaming by herself. You may have been sick. I mentioned to let T hear this I think he would like them. I don't think she caught it. They are an awesome band. I requested the song Daddy, Brother, Lover and Little Boy. Listen to it live in Japan. Alive and Kicking live in Japan is another great one. They had a slower big hit called To Be With You..The members are celebrating with a rerelease of a an album. The drummer has passed unfortunately. They are definitely some talented musicians. I was 18 in 1985 so I lived through some awesome music years. Their live stuff from Japan is awesome. Check them out.👍
I was wondering when somebody was gonna get to this one. Everybody does their "industry required" ballad "To Be With You." Sorry, but that one makes me want to projectile spew puke everywhere. I'm still hopefully waiting on someone to que up some Badlands, Tora Tora, Hurricane, Rough Cutt, Keel, Black n Blue, Dangerous Toys, Fates Warning, Sonic, Phantom, Saxon, Exxplorer (the whole "Symphony of Steel" LP is just ridiculous and raw with it's garage band/analog production), Leatherwolf, Malice, Grim Reaper, Kix, White Wolf, Saigon Kick, Loudness, Faster Pussycat, EZO, and for somebody to get lost in the George Lynch/Dokken wormhole. There's a whole host of others. Guess they'll all pop up at some point lol. Sorry for spewing all the rhetoric...but, there's plenty left.

Not to mention shredding bass! Also Rest easy Pat Torpey (Mr.Big Drummer). There are soooo many bangers from this band! Check out "To Be With You", it's a different vibe from this song, but equally as good!
Mr. Big was a Great Band... they had quite a few hits nothing huge except "To be with you" but if you like the raw playing style try "daddy, bother, lover and your little boy", or "Colorado Bulldog", and "Dancing with my Devils"... were great songs but never really heard a bad song from them either...

Definitely agree. I was just listening to this album o er the weekend. Saw them in a small venue, they ended the show rotating who played each instrument throughout the song. The musicianship in the band was exemplary. Saw Billy a few time with Tales back in the day. Live Speed On Ice is an amazing record.

I only saw Billy live once and it was with The Winery Dogs. I was literally up against the stage, center stage. Almost got whiplash watching him, Richie Kotzen on guitar and vocals, and Mike Portnoy on drums.
