He was one of our best songwriters. Not one of the best singers I believe. But every one in Mrxico knows at least 5 José Alfredo's songs. And we all sing them at the end of a party when we are a little (or very) drunk.

  • @winshifter

Yes, that song was composed specifically to be a thank you to all his public, because he knew he was already dying. He had hepatic cirrhosis and have had it for several years, so he knew his time was limited. One of his best friends, and also a singer, Chavela Vargas metioned that, when the doctors told Jose Alfredo Jimenez that he had only two months to live, he called her to "run the last spree" together along with another composer friend. They spent three days and three nights singing, drinking and going out of proportion on a mitical bar in Garibaldi square on Mexico City.
Chavela Vargas is famous for coining the phrase "Mexicans are born were we want", meaning that Mexicans can be born outside of Mexico and still be Mexicans...which is kind of true, because in the Mexican Constitution, one is Mexican as long as one of your parents is Mexican, regardless if you were not born in Mexican territory. The fun fact though, is that Chavela Vargas was born in Costa Rica to Costarican parents, she got her Mexican citizenship at a very young age, so she always considered herself a Mexican.

One of his last appearances on Mexican television occurred in 1973, just months prior to his death, where he introduced his last song, "Gracias", accompanied by his wife, singer Alicia Juarez. It was his way of thanking the public for all of the affection they had shown him throughout his career as one of the most prolific and highly regarded composers and singers Mexico has ever produced.

This performance was his goodbye to all of Mexico. He is one of the greatest singer-songwriters Mexico has given the country. He died when I was very little but still remember the deep sadness all the adults in my family felt when he passed away. He died of cirrhosis at 47, a painful end according to his wife, but he lived life to its fullest and was mourned by millions upon his death. Every November 23 we still drink a shot of tequila and listen to him singing. Thanks for introducing José Alfredo to younger generations.

I’m crying because I watched this moment and I a veery young girl and my entire family was crying for him. Saying goodby live and then short after this farewell song he died. The greatest songwriter of Mexican music. His unique style of singing and being a humble man. If you react to songs like the corrido of caballo blanco he wrote it based in his white old car when he was driving from Guadalajara to Ensenada Baja California Norte.

  • @gabcf2681

José Alfredo Jiménez, self-styled "El hijo del pueblo" is the greatest composer of ranchero music in Mexico, he had no music studies, but that did not mean an obstacle for his development as a singer-songwriter and to become an indispensable reference when talking about Mexican music. His songs have been and continue to be recorded or interpreted by the best singers not only of ranchero but of other genres, a true interpreter more than a singer of his songs. Greetings

I would recommend Vicente Fernandez (Mujeres Divinas), Luis Miguel (La Incondicional) or Pedro Infante (Fallaste Corazon), also I'm glad you are reading the subtitles.

He died shortly after, he probably looked very similar to this video and he dressed similar too. She said he was wearing one of those cloths too, I don’t remember what it’s called, maybe it’s called a sarape but yeah it’s cool that she remembers that.

José Alfredo was known for his song writing , his emotional performances but also for his heavy , heavy drinking . He was really the peoples poet, so much that some have rumored that some of his songs were not penned by him but by his bottom of the barrel drunkards he used hang out with despite being a star .
He died very young from complications due to his drinking.
You can not walk in to a Mexican establishment , party, workplace , school , in Mexico or in the US where there are Mexicans present , sing a song from José Alfredo and not have more than a few people sing along or sing the end of the verse to the song you started singing . This is a fact.

All true, that was his last written song and performance, wasp sick and knowing what was going to happen.
He made that song specifically to thank the people hence the title.
He was humble and the most connected to the feeling at singing. As a man over his 40’s I can tell you I can break down on tears whit this song.
No singing school or music academy taught, nothing just feeling.

José Alfredo Jiménez sabía que el moriría muy pronto antes de esta canción. Por eso da gracias a su público. Él murió por tomar mucho tequila. Por que José Alfredo solamente podía componer canciones cuando tomaba tequila.
