- Gday,
In this video I give a close up look of my Gibson explorer built in 1984.
Alder Body
Maple Neck
Rose wood fret board
tone pros locking bridge and tail.
Schaller strap locks
There isnt any playing in this video just a close up and small discussion of the guitar. I use this guitar for all my videos so there is plenty of content of me playing it :)
Just boring ole guitar talk, so if thats your thing check this video out.

My 84 is Adler and maple as well and it feels lighter than mahogany for sure. I love it, I scored it on eBay, body and neck only with OHSC. only things I didn't have was the kahler trem and the string lock. I put in some emgs and found a trem on eBay also, it's playable now. Sweet explorer
Hey there, my Gibson Explorer '84 is a bit more beaten up. But i love it, too!
Sorry for the late reply mate. More beat up than mine? haha this one has seen some action for sure. Still going strong in 2019 aswell.
I'd definitely put a Het-Set in there.
That Explorer is Bad to the Bone! I have a 1985 Gibson Explorer Designer Series 22 which is very similar to your! Rock on!!!!!
+Shane Hill glad you enjoyed dude. \m/
Is your 1985 also have the alder body and maple neck?
Hi. Did you remove the Floyd rose form the guitar.
900 bucks!! That’s mad!
900 Aussie dollars :) Still going strong and is still my main guitar!
Melbourne Militia Metclub Chapter yeah I’m Aussie too, that’s crazy cheap!
Does the 1985 ones also have the alder body and maple necks or it's mahogany?
Gday, Sorry for the late reply. From my understanding, the old 80's explorers like this one are indeed Alder Body with a maple neck. Interestingly enough my 84 is much heavier than my modern mahogany explorers!
I say take that Kahler to a luthier. They're cool bridges. maybe it just needs new springs. The wammiworld website has lots of good hints for working with Kahlers. Also, check out my Explorer 84 on my channel. It has this rare crazy Schaller bridge.
Hey mate. I could go down the route of either replacing it with a modern kahler or restoring. But it just didn't feel right under the hand, I do a lot of Palm muted riffs and feel is very important.
If I could get my hands on another 84 with a TOM. Then I'd consider going back to a kahler. I'd have to teach myself how to use it properly though haha.
nothing is wrong with you're kahler, they are bomb proof. probably needs light oiling on the bearings, intonation set and replace guitars nut with a graphtech which self lubes. i just restored mine and ot had been dropped on the road tripped on stage and then left in a coffee can rusting for 20 years. i have owned the guitar since 1984. if you need any tech tips on the kahler....let me know.
Hey man!!!....My 85 kahler lock down screws at the nut always seem to cut my strings....any suggestions?
@@michaelandmelanieasby4378 u dont need to screw them down hard for them to lock. Ots the B and E string breaking right?
You know it bro.....thanks!!!
sell me the string lock you took off of the headstock please, david
Hey mate. Despite the kahler trem being a complete waste of a bridge I want to keep it as a set. So I won't separate it sorry.
Have a good one.
Justin Powell Nice guitar! I have a white one too that I love. It's a nice and light alder body/maple neck. Some 84's were all mahogany but I much prefer the alder/maple mix.
BronYrAur3 Thanks mate, my alder/maple explorer is actually pretty heavy. Heavier than my LTD Mahogany snakebyte. I cant imagine how ever an all Mahogany 80's explorer would be. Older guitars tend to be really heavy. I am always on the look out for more 84 explorers. Not many around in Australia havent seen one since I got this one.
Melbourne Militia Metclub Chapter Yeah I think those are tough to find in general. I had been looking on and off for 14 years and maybe came across a handful of white ones with various setups (i.e. kahler, stop-bar). There is one on eBay now in America but the guy wants a fortune for it: Best condition I've ever seen one in though. Having been through 4 '84 explorers I'd have to say the weight is really inconsistent on these. I had one that was all mahogany and it was considerably heavier than the other 2 alder/maple. Bottom line, I think this model is probably one of the best Gibson made in the 80's. Cheers.
