  • Scott Pye and Co host Elliot Barbour break down round 5 of the Supercars Championship in Darwin. There were shunts, penalties and of course the case of who forgot how to driver returned for many. We also give our predictions ahead of the Next round in Townsville and discuss how Supercars should let drivers race each other more aggressively.

Maybe Supercars does watch the pod, they just announced a new tyre compound test.
You guys do a great job of analysing what was a pretty straightforward race, I like to think I'm a pretty switched on fan, but so much that you talked about I didn't pick up at all lol.
Regarding session formats, I can understand Darwin, Perth, and NZ getting the cars on track for 3 days, the diehard local fans kinda deserve that. Same with all the practice sessions at Bathurst, it's always cool seeing a car rip across the mountain, and it's cooler if it's a V8.
    Good pod again guys 👍

Does anyone else feel the tyre design is the elephant in the room? Scott, you have done years on this rubber, when a tyre has to be babied so much and it gets heat effected so easily, how can the racing be "energetic"? What do you think?
    Best Regards, David Brown.

Hey Mate, yep the tyre is average and often the super soft tyre has less deg than the soft which goes against everything it should be intended for. I tested the GoodYear they are looking at going to and I thought it was a step in the right direction. Hopefully we see a change soon. SP

@@apexhuntersunited that is good news. When you see other categories able to race hard without the fear of tyres falling off fast, there is more interest I think. Thanks for the reply. DB

    1. have more races
    2. Get better Tyres that can last 30 laps at speed
    3. Make the cars stronger
    4. Allow a bit of contact
    5. Less practice and qualifying, more racing
    6. Less Mark Skaife talking all over the racing
    7. Let more of the drivers' personalities shine through
    8. Allow the driver to voice opinions
Look at svg now compared to supercars
    Just my opinion

Being a home spectator I find the coverage incredibly limited. Supercars being the top tier touring car racing with tons of tech, limits home viewers to a very tunneled 2D view. I'd really like to be able to select/watch a driver's eye view, watch virtual eye track positioning, some telemetry data that's allowed to be public (gear/brake/throttle? etc), and an alternate audio track that has no commentary, or teams radio only? I personally am biased to drivers, not really car make or a team, but the coverage is very limited. There seems to be on-track packages to purchase, but nothing for those at home prepared to have a better experience. We have driver's eye and rarely ever see it? Living in NZ on-track is only reasonable a few times a year.

Should have a 20 minute practice and straight to qualifying. Q1,Q2,Q3 style. Need a tyre that can get flogged without falling off a cliff and some tube section around the wheel house.

the top ten shootout was the best thing from the event. The races were a total snooze fest of tyre management red bull fandom fluff. Disappointing Golding couldn't convert but shows huge potential. Chaz was super impressive and drove it SVG/Ingall style through the field on sat which didnt get enough coverage of his passes as again supercars obsessed following Red Bull.

I would personally extend the Supercars season by adding races in Phillip Island, Newcastle, Calder Park, Oran Park, Tailem Bend, Queensland Raceway, Canberra, Wellington and Port Moresby, and would also create a Women's Supercars Championship.
In my opinion, the longer season and Women's Championship would be terrific value for sponsors, broadcasters, and fans.

Great episode guys. Format change for $upercars needs to change for variance. Mix of Soft / Hard Tyre only races over the weekend. Chook lotto draw before every race where 1 car gets an extra 100rpm, or a 10kgs reduction, or 2-5mm increase in gurney flap. Vary the support categories who go out before $upercars so track evolution is a variance. As for as street circuit chat goes, I hate the idea. All that funding goes to 4-5 categories for one weekend a year. It compromises young driver development by not giving them the opportunity to race permanent infrastructure, & albeit Sims are good, seat time on any track makes for better drivers.

Saturday, Chas chose 4 tyres, Sunday everybody went 4 tyres. Saturday should be something like 2 x 1hr sprint races, or 1 x45 min race and 1x 75 min race (so that it requires different tactics) and Sunday a 2 hour race, with maybe no CPS, with fuel (not compulsory drop) deciding the strategy, and the teams deciding whether or not to change tyres. This will then put the race in the control of the teams without a contrived format. Just my 5 cents worth.

Any chance of getting Bairdo on?
Not sure whether he could share his opinion as freely as you'd like but it would definitely be interesting to hear it from his side of the table. What changes he might make like you were talking about with the time penalties/drive throughs. Whether he'd be happy to give the drivers a bit more freedom to self police.
Question for you two, what are your thoughts on international wildcards like you've got now with Supercars drivers going over to do NASCAR or would you rather it was younger drivers coming through Super 2 & the other support categories getting a chance like Cooper Murray this weekend?
As always loving these pods, debrief format is really good. Was good to see Shane in the side cast on Sunday too. Keep it up lads.

Thanks mate. Love the ideas, it would be cool to see the category experiment with different formats and then look at the feedback. There are so many options out there to spice it up. Yep, they need to improve the tyre. More mechanical grip would improve the racing and then a tyre thats not so heat effected in dirty air, you spend half the time nursing the tyre rather than pushing. Conserving tyres from the moment you leave the pits is a shit idea.

    • @apexhuntersunited
      @apexhuntersunited  2 місяці тому +1

It would be great to see everyone in the shootout have a crack on green tyres yes. This is a good point though. In qualifying the faster guys can save a set often which just ensures the fast cars have an even bigger advantage in the shootout. It would be cool to limit the use of tyres in qualifying to two sets or even 1 and if you don’t make the shootout you have fresh tyres for the race.

Reason for the overiding wheels is the very soft crush zone in rear lower quater panels. There is nothing protecting that area at all. There needs to be a carbon brace on all four corners.

Another awesome episode guys, One of my biggest problems with the telecast these days is the very obviously fake advertising signage superimposed over the track. Like I get that supercars needs to sell space to make money but the very obvious fake digital signage makes the whole thing look amateur hour. If they went and bought some of the digital advertising boards the NRL are using it would make the category look somewhat professional. Are supercars just happy doing something they know and are scared of change or do they generally not care how the product looks at home on tv??

    My $0.02….
    1. Races were too short. Another 15 laps to stretch out tyre life and let strategies play out. Plus we wait for weeks for a race and get two 50 minute races.
2, Supercars need a main “hype”commentator. A Matt white or Leigh Diffey type. Skaife and co can add their expert comments around it. It’s too calm in the booth,
    3. Supercar fans arenegative nancies. It’s killing the category when it’s actually a great product.

100% they are watching. The problem with the people who run the show at Supercars is they have a very insular way of looking at things. Some races should be a three day format.
Bathurst is a perfect example. Adelaide, Albert Park and Surfers may be others that fit that mould. The rest should be two day events. The lack of ability to alter the cars may make for better racing in those two day events.

I love a 2 day weekend idea. The biggest issue with the sport imao is that field spreads out after 5 laps, how does the sport get more passing happening and keep the field congested and more really tough battles that last 20 laps. Remember seton and kelly 05 Adelaide or skaife and ingall in 04 at estern creek? Those battles went on for lap after lap after lap. Thats what the sport needs more of.

Except if I’m traveling all the way to Darwin for only a 2 day event, then it’s likely a no go for me.
Like the Gold Coast, head down Thursday night and leave Monday making an event and trip away out of it. At the track for all 3 days regardless off V8’s are on or not - if V8’s aren’t on, gives more reason to be able to see the track at different areas other than grandstand seat and infield activations etc without missing any action.
Porsche Carrera Cup, Aussie racing cars and other high level supports etc are all worth watching too. The Friday
Filler rounds (not that any less important to the championship, but are not the headlining events such as Adelaide, Gold Coast, Darwin, Townsville etc) such as Tasmania, SMSP, etc would be suited to 2 day rounds.

That's exactly the kind of racing we've all been wanting to see for years. How hard is it for supercars to just put a tyre on the car that let's the drivers battle it out like that lap after lap? After following nascar a bit this year I've realised the annoying stage cautions throughout the race actually make the racing better, wondering if supercars implementing this would make the racing a lot better.
