Stowaway stool (how-to) build

  • This stool was designed for outside use. Its four-legged frame is sturdy on the gravel or in the grass. It has also been a great way to reduce clutter in our greenhouse. IF YOU BUILD THIS: send me a link to a picture of it, and I will feature it in a future video on my second channel. WOOD GLUE: use it if you want, but it will add little to the structure in this case. The only places on this project where there are suitable bonding sites are places that are already strong enough. I used it only on the square frame of the lid this time, and no glue was used in the original.
You will probably notice that this is a bit more novice-oriented than most of my videos. I wanted to mix it up a bit stylistically, but it has made the film quite long. In fact, the folder for this project is around 20 GB, and contains some three-hundred files. The MP4 itself (the finished product that was sent to UA-cam) was 1.10 GB. This may be the biggest one I have produced yet, so there were quite a few technical hurdles. I hope that you enjoy the videography.
The video was an attempt to replace the conventional blueprint method for assisted construction. A plan is simply unnecessary here, because the video can be used as a companion for constructing the stool; everything that you need to build this is in here. You are, of course, free to use, modify, and distribute this idea as you see fit. However, if you make a blueprint of this design, you are stealing my property and violating the entire purpose of this video. I don't expect all of you to listen, though. I know that many of you are motivated more by your greed and ambitions than by your ethical development. So I expect to lose this design in a sense, and that's okay. It's not as though it will be a great loss: First of all, I came up with this design while I was drunk, and the entire thing took less than an hour to both conceptualize and to construct the prototype, even while drinking. Secondly, I am presenting this mostly to those who will find it useful, and not to the plan vultures; the video will get far more traffic, and be far more user-friendly, than any of those blueprint distribution scams will. But the design does have a bit of a miraculous history if you think about it: Usually, you just wake up with a headache and ask, "my goodness, what have I done?" This was a case of waking up and finding something that was actually decent for once, so it was more like, "my goodness, what have I made? That's cool!"

***** Ha! Yeah, I did have a few for a bit that absolutely hated me. Those types are clearly deranged: even after banning, they will still send emails and quickly leave dislikes. I am not surprised, given how I respond to commenters, but you seem nice enough. Maybe it was that politically-infused video you did not too long ago; if those Tories of yours are anything like the "Tea Party" is here, they are riddled with angry irrationality that provides the ideal basis for a personality trivial enough to administer vengeance dislikes. lol.

Lol, I'm just trying to follow the British tradition of perpetually modelling myself on the Beatles. I already have a bad haircut, and next week I'll juts start making yoga videos. I might have also embarrassed a few people with my Miscellaneous Questions, into not commenting, which I should follow up...

Yet again, you nail it with a fantastic video! As a 30-year graduate-level professor and 25-year woodworker I have a couple of things to say. Of course, this would be a simplistic project for me. That's not a reflection on you, however. I wish I'd learned woodworking 25 years ago the way you teach it in this video. I would have made many fewer mistakes. Which leads me to my second point. Obviously, I don't know what you do for a living, but if you're not teaching in some capacity, it's a shame. You have a real knack for teaching conceptually, which is how I've taught all these years. Bravo and I look forward to your next video! PS.- I love the subliminals. The "Plane God" in your carpenter's anvil vid is the best!

beauxtx1959 I really appreciate your comment. Many of my videos have an intermediate feel to them, because I have typically started by making the assumption that you (the viewer) have an understanding of certain foundational principles. I've always considered this to be fair, because the viewer can research any topic that they feel unclear of, and I do not wish to insult or to talk down. That being said, I've really felt the recent demographic shift that has resulted from some of my more... well, unconventional content. Many of these people don't have a foundational skillset, and I think that we really need to return our young people to making "real" things, productively speaking. As I expect that you have no doubt already experienced during your professorship, that "knack" is a developed skill; I wasn't such a clear presenter when I first started. Anyhow, I truly, truly appreciate that you've noticed my target: the concept. The more I come to understand about the nature of human cognition, the more it seems to me that most of what we use as learning instrument is just packaging that can be dispensed with, whether we want it to be or not. You sure do have your work cut out for you.

I really enjoy your videos. This one was really good as it fit with my skill level. A lot of good tips in this one as well. I made 2 of them for the front porch. Once I had a saw set up, I cut all of that size that was needed for both. I used ceder fence boards which were 9" by 1\2" and 6 ft tall. I bought 10 at Home Depot. I used 1 3\4" exterior screws on the lid, so I didn't have to sand them down. I had to use my fingers AND toes for the math to get the dimensions for the 6 slats of the lid and have the 3\16 between each with 1\8 on the outside. (HA, HA). I used 7 1\2 boards. With a total of at least 1 used because of not measuring or thinking correctly. I took pictures but don't know how to upload then to you.

One of my first jobs was at a galvanizing plant, and if we got stuff out of the bath with the color of your screws, we had to scrap them for being below standard. If I remember correctly, it had something to do either with the temperature of the bath being too low or water contamination. But any way, the white/matte is a sign of lower quality bond and thus faster rusting.

As always, pocket, great job. Making that miniature was brilliant, and makes yours stand apart from all the other build videos on here! I think the only thing I would do differently on the project would be to sink the screws a bit deeper and use plugs to match the wood. Or maybe plugs that were very different, to add a touch of contrast. Either way, great job!

Matt Johnston That would make it look better. I don't think my material would've worked though, because it was a bit thin. With 3/4" stock it could be done. One change I would make Is to add a rope handle to it on each side, but I never got around to doing it. As always, thanks ;)

The rope handle is a good idea. Especially is you're going to use it for a planter, like you briefly shot.

I remember being in wood shop class during high school and one of our classmates was being careless using the table saw. He would've lost his finger, but the table saw's safety design saved him. Apparently there's a sensor that sets off once the blade comes into contact with a fleshy substance. Everyone in class stopped when they heard the loud bang. The guy didn't even realize his finger had been cut until he saw the blood dripping.

Awesome video! But I was thinking maybe you could use a round-over bit to round out the edges of the lid to make the seat a little more comfortable.

ReportedOpacity Alright! I hope it doesn't strike people as boring. It's pretty long. But I don't like those two-parters.
