I had a hedgehog like 25 years ago in high school. Got him when he was a little guy that would roll into a spiky ball when I touched him. Once he got used to me he kept his spines flat and laid back like hair. He was so sweet. Actually got attached to me kind of like a dog. Wish they lived longer though. It sucks getting attached to a pet that has a short lifespan.
So true. I had two Guinea pigs and one of them caught pneumonia and it died, the sickness spread to the next Guinea pig and she died too. I saw them die so it was even harder. They weren’t even a year old
Hedgehogs are probably my fav animals. Apart from just looking silly and cute it just feels like all of them have this "nice guy" personality :D the only occasion you`d see one act "nasty" is if they are scared and even then their hissing is the furthest from intimidating and it`s so adorable how miserably they fail at doing their "mean face". Unlike most critters they aren`t known for being a nuisance but even take a great part in helping nature getting rid of said nuisances :P It`s also hard for me to get over the fact that they are covered with sharp spikes - something that can easily be used to described some scary and evil made up creature from a horror movie but instead they are as gentle and sweet as one can get without breaking the space-time continuum.
A similar thing can happen to dogs. If they're rolling around and an intestine gets "torsion-ed" (twisted at both ends) that intestine can fill with gas and eventually cause major problems. I had that happen to my dog and the vet sorted it out quickly.
That condition in dogs is called Gastric dilatation-volvulus, but is more commonly known as “bloat.” It occurs most often in the stomach as a result of distention which can quickly “turn” the organ, essentially tying it at both ends where the stomach meets the small intestine, and the esophageal sphincter. The stomach produces digestive protease enzymes & stomach acids in order to break down food once it has been ingested - when bloat occurs, those gasses have no way of escaping, and the stomach has no way of pausing the production of those gasses. It eventually continues filling with gas & kills the animal if left untreated. The difficulty with bloat is that by the time you recognize a change in behavior, it’s almost always too late to save them. Bloat can happen with any breed, but it is exponentially more common in large breeds, & the most common impetus is dry dog food - when a dog eats his/her dry food quickly, then proceeds to immediately drink a great deal of water, the dry food in their stomach expands rapidly, which turns (or twists) it, trapping the food, water, and gasses. It’s also common for dogs which suffer bloat to eat their food at a healthy rate, drink a relatively small amount of water, but then exert a great deal of energy right after eating. Luckily it sounds like you have a strong bond with your dog, and recognized its distress early…and you have a very good vet, who was able to reverse the damage quickly. That’s rare, so it’s impressive! Well done. (Speaking of vets, most of them will use a minimally invasive preemptive procedure with large & extra large breeds called gastropexy which involves using sutures to attach the stomach in its proper position to the abdominal wall. They usually do it while spaying/neutering, since they’re already under general anesthesia. In the past, 2 of my Corso’s, 5 of my Great Danes, 2 of my German shepherds, and 1 of my boxers all underwent gastropexy while being spayed &/or neutered.)
@@DrAnderson1 wow, so far informative, I wonder now if some of my childhood dogs weren't suffering this and not just fat, I had no idea this was a condition, I'll be mindful of it in the future. On a side note, I have a cat who's 14 going on 15 years old and he only recently it the last week or so has gotten a little lethargic, He's always been extremely healthy for his age(can still clear a five foot fence in a single bound without missing a beat) he doesn't exhibit any other symptoms, cept his ears are sensitive, is his age just finally catching up with him, you think?
I have EDS and I sometimes get gas swells between my dermis and muscles. They fortunately fix themselves in time, unlike in the Hedgehog. My skin is so loose that sometimes gasses from my muscles working, etc builds up into these little pockets. Usually it's more fluids, but some CT scans showed some air. We only found out because I had a professor of EDS studying me while it was happening.
I had a pet hedgehog and she never had this problem- the balloon syndrome. The main problem I had with her was keeping her warm enough, she was very sensitive to temperature changes.

About male wasps trying to sting you. I think it is more about the males having inherited the instincts to sting as a gender neutral instinct. And it sorta works, being males dont live lo need de-evolve it. Just like men got nipples. PS As for queens living much longer than the workers. Queens sleeps for much longer and in fewer longer periods. Workers only get a few hours total with few minutes naps. While queen can easily sleep like 8-10 hours total.
Well, the frog and wolverine aren't far of they both break their skin to use their claws. But every time his claws retract his skin heals back so its a cycle of pain
Can someone explain to me how needing something means your species evolves to get it? Wouldn't there have to be some random mutation that gives a wasp a stinger?
Natural selection. Organisms with the best genes survive and pass on their genes for evolution. A wasp which began to develop a sting is more adapted to live and survives while a wasp without a sting isn't so successful and dies. And trough the evolution species develop a fully working sting

Talking about birds and wind turbines and power lines... A long while ago, I was returning to San Diego from the Palm Springs area. I left while it was still dark so I could make use of the whole day when I returned. Taking a winding mountain road, when getting close to Temecula the sun was about to rise. Off to the side of the road, was a power line with a turkey vulture perched on one of the middle wires. As I neared it, the sun started to rise over the hilltop and the vulture threw wide its wings in a glorious fashion to welcome the sun... And bridged all of the wires with its wings... Next thing I see is a huge fireball explode into existence and an thick oily smoke mushroom cloud launch skyward from the vulture's location. This was followed by a totally carbonized skeletal carcass which fell down into the brush below. I felt bad for the bird, but I still couldn't help laughing my ass off. I wonder if vultures and other large birds are an additional source of wildfires...
I saw one near my house a couple of days ago. I poked it with a branch just a little bit to see its reaction. The hedge was like, what the f dude, chill 🤣. They are very slow and lazy creatures.
