  • Reposted from Instagram- @signedwithheart - I know the video title gives away the fingerspelled word. 😅 I had to have a title for the video. But I will create more fingerspelling practice video in the future without giving away in the video titles. :)
    About the signs for “Person”… there are two different versions- the initialized version and the non-initialized version. Initialized signs are signs that use the handshape of a letter like letter P for Person. Some signs in American Sign Language are initialized with a handshape of the first letter of a word… like for examples, C for cousin, A for aunt, N for niece / nephew.
    The non-initialized version of “person” is more commonly used but both are used, so either is fine. The non-initialized sign for “person” is used at the end for occupation words ending -er like teacher, photographer, manager, etc, like “teach” + “person” for Teacher. It’s the same for words that do not end with -er but are occupation words like artist, actor, etc, you sign “person” at the end, “art” + “person” for artist.
    If you aren’t able to identify letters on the spot at the slowest speed, I encourage you to sign up for the Fingerspelling 101: The Alphabet mini online course. You might know the alphabet but you probably need more practice identifying letters on the spot and that will really help with your fingerspelling receptivity making it easier to practice reading fingerspelling. And it’s only $15! :)

    Now, tell me, have you met a Deaf person before, or have you seen one before? I love stories so share away! 😄

      @@Earlybirdify hi there. I wanted to ask you a question. It's possibly a dumb question but nonetheless, I'd like to ask. I'm HoH but you said you are mute & speak Hebrew. How are you mute if you speak Hebrew (and looks like English too)? Thank you!

      Don't blame me. Blame on my 🍺 beer. Just kidding. I smile.
      Anyway here is your answer... If I say "I am deaf and mute. I speak Russia." Know that mean he or she knows RSL and ASL. Note RSL for short Russia Sign Language.
      Me? HSL I should mention HSL.
      Some Deaf understand word slang "Speak" as Sign Language of? Hebrew. HSL.
      I know two languages HSL and ASL.
      Much love
      Thank for comment.

      @@Earlybirdify my apologies. That makes sense. It was my fault for forgetting that speak also includes sign language. Thank you for responding and reminding me of the proper wording. Have a blessed day!

    These are nice, the front view and the side view.
    For beginners, it is important that each letter is formed before moving on to the next, that is a big help.

    Ms. Ashley, can you explain a little more about the use of the "finish" sign in context of asking a "have you" question? I noticed that in one of your previous videos, too. Please forgive my ignorance, but I am very new to learning ASL. While there are no in-person classes nearby at present, I'm just catching what I can from Deaf creators like yourself and an app on my phone (that leaves a lot to be desired... I need to find a better app). I appreciate your time and assistance, and I also really appreciate the work you do!

    Always love seeing these. Didn't realize the "finish" sign would be used for having met someone, I knew about it for being some place b4, but I guess didn't think about tit in that context of meeting someone.
    Thanks again for the quick lesson.
    Regards
    Rich

    Great video!! I love your refreshers! Quick question... in this video you don't use your two hands on your chest for "have." Is this because that form shows possession? And then in this question it's not possession? Or is it just a 2nd form if the word? Have a blessed night! 🤗🙌🤟

    • @nataliar9028
      @nataliar9028 3 роки тому

      I started learning ASL just recently, but as far as I know, yes, two hands on your chest mean possession. If you say "have done sth", you use the sign "finish" for "have"

    • @signedwithheart
      @signedwithheart  3 роки тому +3

      Yes, what Natalia said. :) Thanks Natalia. It would be considered Signing Exact English if you use the sign "have" (as in possession) to sign "Have you met a Deaf person?" but don't sweat it, don't stress about it. As I always say, use what you know, you learn as you go. :)
