Nice video, I’m a retired HD mechanic and can’t tell you how many motor jobs I’ve done because of aftermarket air cleaners, had one guy suck down the three bolt that hold the backing plate into his motor and just what you were talking about, a lot of little things can go wrong when you just dont know and then they get mad at the tech for charging so much, never understood how you can spend so much money on a bike but won’t spend it where you need it, thanks for the video
Off topic of the breather but my shift rod broke while on a ride. I went in to my local shop and it was $180. I went on EBay and bought one for $15. It ended up being free because it took 10 days to get here and they refunded me the total cost. I’m not saying I’d trust eBay with anything vital to my machine but I can understand why people do. I love my Harley and the people and I hate to see them struggling the way they are. But times have changed, people don’t spend money the way they use to so I think instead of trying to be “elite” make it enjoyable and affordable for people to customize their bikes. We need the upcoming generations to fall in love with Harley and get them off cafe bikes and 750’s. I’m 40 and probably right at that line where people love the Harley lifestyle to people who either don’t care or don’t know. We are old and can’t support Harley forever, so we need young riders and need affordable prices to bring them in. Sorry I babbled.
Harley doesnt care about their customers, they only care about getting their hand in your pocket and getting as much money out of you as they can. I left Harley in 2014 and never plan on returning.
@@281sTravel Yes they are, but out of the box you get far more for your money. Harley has becomes dated, stale and old and for what is supposed to be a "Premium" brand, all you get from Harley is the same vehicle over and over year after year with the exception of colours, gimmicks and continued disappointment.
@@281sTravel your brand loyalty is blinding you again. I would rather have a motorized windshield that have to give Harley more money to buy others. You really are stupid aren't you?
Great video and explaining how your Harley air cleaner is supposed to be installed properly. I never would've known about the bolts being the way they are. Thank you for posting this video! God bless.
This is one level headed mechanic. Bravo. I am not much for anything not STOCK, and his ability to "deal" with a knock off non HD mod and do so with a solution vs a slam is awesome. SUSCRIBED!
Good video! STUDY before you buy anything. Ebay isn't problem (I get plenty of NOS and good used OEM and reputable aftermarket parts for my HDs, Nortons etc via Ebay) but customers need to STUDY HARD before buying anything. The first thing to buy for your Harley is the FACTORY service manual(s). The second is the factory parts catalog. They are the best tools you can own (and as tech data goes they beat the rest of the industry).
absolutely fantastic video. I'm going with a amazon intake set up for now as it's slightly cheaper and I'm planning a full big bore kit which will replace the tb with a bigger one anyways, and as I don't have the best expectations or experiences with amazon units having instructions, let alone all of the correct bolts to begin with making this even better, especially since I had no clue about the bolt size difference.
Doc, I just purchased a 1988 Softail custom, it has solid bolts installed to mount a Screaming Eagle air filter assembly. Should the 1988 have breather bolts? I tried to look into the bolt holes, I couldn't see a breather hole for the bolt.
I have an Arlen Ness Intake on mt 2018 XL1200C. Manual says to use grease to hold the O-rings in. Doesn't mention Type? I used a Silicon based grease. Kind that comes with brake pads for the sliders.
Right on Doc! I learned the hard way.... cheap? That's great until you have to fire up the torch to make the damn thing fit! Example? Harley said their "fangs" wouldn't fit with a crash bar on my Street Glide. So....I ordered an ebay set. Guess what? The forks wouldn't turn all the way. Now Harley has made an adjustment slot on their "fangs". Adjust as direct and they fit! Imagine that!
Doc, I added a DK Customs Outlaw air cleaner to '16 FLHTK. With stock backplate removed it would seem that the OEM breather bolts would go further into the heads. How big of a spacer should be used?
Why does my fuel gauge read empty and yellow light on when I'm sitting straight up on the bike but I put the cake stand down it goes to full and the light shuts off. Or fill my tank up and the gauge reads full go down the road a piece the gauge goes to empty and my yellow light comes on scratch my head
First, nest time you post, give model and year. it helps. A possible wire connection is loose or broken so as to ground the sending wire. also sending unit in tank is bad....as in bike has been sitting for a long time and the ethynol has corroded the sensor. and it is possible the guage it self is bad. Needs to be diag by your local dealer...Doc
I got my 2006 electric glide classic last summer I noticed it has a K N air filter I have oil coming in from back cylinder only enough that it gets on the front on my saddle bag maybe that’s what is going on
Doc......how's that work on an EVO.....I have an 89, and when I got it, I was motivated to change out all the nasty looking 31 year old hardware out for stainless.
Great project bike. Be careful on Stainless hardware in old aluminum parts. I love the use of Stainless stuff but research has taught me to use lubricant made for the combination in aluminum. Do your research and continue to build something beautiful with lasting abilities. Thanks ~ Doc
When harley stops selling stage 1 filters for magneti marelli injections you need to search for alternatives like these... ( k&n the filter used in this one also stopped) only possible filter for this injection type i could find is this one from arlen ness
I would like to thank Doc for all the videos. But to the people of Harley ask yourself one question how and why did you get into this culture I'll make it simple in the end it will be the ride and the people greed has took in over and the corporate is killing the culture.
hey Doc great vid!....I hope motorman has you on his payroll, you deserve it.lol. anyway, where can i find heavily discounted engine/freeway bars for my vulcan900, dont care if its made in china, mex or Mars?? I refuse to pay these dealer prices for steal , they prolly have those guys make it anyway, please help.
20%of 60 is 12 horsepower, personally I do not believe an aftermarket air cleaner would do that, so why waste your money on a doo dad that most likely will fail and cause premature engine failure ? More air, more power, supercharger.
after market stuff is a scam to take your moneys HD owner like to spend their $ on their bike a man thing. But HD is just old bike, with that said I own 2 Harley myself and love it, shaking and handling like crap but it look good and sound good, sport ride I get on BMW or Ducati. So to up grade your Harley is a waste of moneys.
If Harley didn’t over price the absolute fuckin hell out of everything, maybe we wouldn’t have to go looking for more reasonable deals elsewhere. Last place I look is harley
I will never understand why people spend so much money for a premium brand bike then cheapen it by using cheap chinese Ebay crap. I would never buy a used motorcycle if I saw cheap Ebay crap on the motorcycle, it actually says a lot about how you maintain the bike. I have walked away from several because i saw non brand knockoff shit on a bike. I have a 2021 SGS, i would never put Ebay crap on it.
I have a friend that did that, spend $25,000+ on a new Street Glide, then found a really nice air cleaner on Ebay that looked just like the Arlen Ness cleaner, only difference was he paid $129 and he installed it. He didnt realize that those rubber tubes that direct the air back into the engine we becoming compressed due to poor design when installed and the engine couldn't breath, he ended up blowing a gasket and cost him 4 hours labour at $150 per hour so $600 and then had to buy a new SE air cleaner anyway that was another $450, that mistake cost him over $1100
Sometimes you can go cheap on parts and sometimes you can’t. But hey isn’t the real problem that Harley charges for parts? A Rushmore ultra trunk for $1800. Black hinge latch kit for $200. Love my Road Glide but damn nothing is cheap for this bike.
These daze unless yer buyin a new one theyre sellin for chump chg anyway. This situation continues and well bee buying them even less than chump chg!!😂😂😎

There’s lots of good aftermarket parts out there , but I want hands on or the ability to speak to someone before I buy
would this apply to older engines. i have a 1990 flstc so i need these breather bolts?
No sir. 1993 is the beginning of upper breather bolts. Thanks ~ Doc
thsnx for the reply. after watching the vid i did dome research the 1990 evo has a crankcase breather.
Doc, I added a DK Customs Outlaw air cleaner to '16 FLHTK. With stock backplate removed it would seem that the OEM breather bolts would go further into the heads. How big of a spacer should be used?
Except the arlen ness big sucker you were using as an example is actually a quality part for the money.
