I just looked at this for the first time, I’m wondering why this concept is such a big deal. Wouldn’t data simply get sent to one place and automatically sent to a destination folder based on the file extension? Eg, all .pdf extension to one place ect ect?
Yes that would be one small use case, but now expand the horizons to all of the other sources of data in an organization and centralize those into one place which everybody with credentials can access. That might sound insignificant but when you have an organization with thousands of employees and machines producing both structured and unstructured data you there is a lot of value there. The data lake however is not the end game for many corporations. I recommend you watch the Amazon BI Tech Talk I gave a few months ago. I distinguish the data lake from the data warehouse.
