    Thanks again. I feel like your channel helps by holding my hand while gardening for the first time in Central Texas. Of course, I pick THIS year to start a garden, lol! It's been okay though - it's Texas Toughening me up.

      I'm glad I can help! My experience growing here since 2009 has taught me to be prepared for extremes and inconsistent seasons. Building up resources for season extending systems, and early planting followed by succession planting is a good strategy. 👍🏼✨

      As you know we start early in the season for tomatoes. But it would be nice to prolong growing them 😁

      I harvested yellow onions on May 8th and the red onions on June 5th, but the red onions never got soft necks. I've grown these varieties for years and it was peculiar. The red onions didn't size up as well but they had good quality.

    • @newgardenroad

      Thank you!! Here are a few links to explore.
      I love these clips and for reference I used 16 for this particular shade structure.
      C-BITE garden clips (affiliate link): www.amazon.com/dp/B08TB2FZJG?tag=onamznewgarde-20&linkCode=ssc&creativeASIN=B08TB2FZJG&asc_item-id=amzn1.ideas.LWP290N8Q6CM
      I purchase my shade cloth locally, but I believe this is the distributor they use: shadeclothstore.com/product/40-black-shade-cloth/
      The size of spring clips needed can vary, so I keep several sizes on hand. www.amazon.com/dp/B08BNDRPHB/ref=sspa_dk_detail_2?psc=1&pd_rd_i=B08BNDRPHB&pd_rd_w=caUgb&content-id=amzn1.sym.999c0877-3704-4f0f-9726-eebf80846a35&pf_rd_p=999c0877-3704-4f0f-9726-eebf80846a35&pf_rd_r=NZ1K5A0D74WBM9T01C5C&pd_rd_wg=ONvL9&pd_rd_r=bfece7b8-4eb6-485b-953a-a51d8c4883cc&s=hi&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEySjY0QUQyQjAyUlpWJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMzE3MTg0MjJFS1VESUpLNzE2MyZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwODA3NDU2Q04zNk1ZSFFRUU40JndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfZGV0YWlsJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==
      I used 4' and 6' sturdy stakes in this video. The shorter ones going into the soil are 4' stakes that I cut in half : www.amazon.com/Sunnyglade-Stakes-Garden-Tomato-Supports/dp/B082DZRNQ8/ref=sr_1_4_sspa?crid=39BJBNCJDQV4Z&keywords=sturdy+stakes+4+feet&qid=1657926755&sprefix=4%27+sturdy+%2Caps%2C80&sr=8-4-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEzRkVYRlQ1R0xKME5SJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwOTY3NTE3MTJVUllSNkpXME80TSZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUExMDQ2MDM4MlBQTkxMMTUzQjFYUiZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX2F0ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU=

    Best advise for a local first time survival gardener? My soil is clayish and extremely rocky 7.2ph. I am attempting 5 fifty-foot rows from scratch

    • @newgardenroad
      @newgardenroad  2 роки тому +2

      Take the time to build the soil over several seasons. Compost, compost, compost. Don't leave the soil bare. Cover crops are a good source of organic matter, chop them up and scatter over the rows. Collect fallen leaves in autumn, shred them and make leaf mold, they're black gold.
      I hope that helps!

    Help! I have fuzzy white mold on the soil at the base of my southern peas. How do I get rid of it??

    • @newgardenroad
      @newgardenroad  2 роки тому

      That's a tricky one without seeing it, is there mulch up to the base of the plants? If so I would pull it back. White mold itself, particularly after a period of rain isn't alarming. That can be mycelial growth which is active soil biology (a good thing).

    I’m in Texas between Houston and Galveston. How often should i be watering by Orange tree that’s in a container? Also should I move it out of full sun with the temps getting so high?

    • @newgardenroad
      @newgardenroad  2 роки тому +2

      Hello! How often to water varies according to the soil structure, the size of the container, and how developed the root system is. We need that soil to dry out a bit in between waterings. Citrus do not like to have soggy roots. I check mine by sticking a finger in the soil by about two inches and if it feels dry at the tip, I give it a good soak. Mine are growing in 10-12 gallon containers and they've needed water every 2-3 days.
      You may want to move it out of the full sun if the leaves are getting scalded, and this is the time of year I start to notice that on my trees. Ideally they get some shade in the late afternoon, and for me that's about 3pm. I hope that helps!

      @@newgardenroad I'm in San Antonio and just reading this. I have 3 citrus trees all in 20 gallon containers...My concern after reading your recommendations for watering is that I've watered too much even though the containers are set up to allow water to flow right out of them without gathering up at the bottom. With that said however, I've watered every single day out of fear from this intense heat wave we've been in as you well know. And even watered a couple times during the night and then again in the morning. They seem okay but then again, they also seem like they could be doing better. I've watched your video about caring for citrus trees and in fact bought many if not all of the recommended fertilizers and soil amendments. But after reading your reply above to the previous query, I am a little worried that I'm over doing it. Your thoughts please....
