    Hi
    First of all thanks for the video, its very informative
    Secondly can we use aces 1.2 instead of 1.0.3, any specific reason you used 1.0.3 instead of the new one.

      I actually just noticed that i used the 1.0.3 version in the video, and the interesting part is that when downloading from the GitHub repo the zipped file didn't contain the 1.2 version file, hence i used the latest one that was available there.

    I agree with Remaining Light. All the videos I've watched regarding V-Ray and ACEScg workflow settings lack information on gamma settings.
    Could you tell us how to properly set the gamma in Render Setup >> V-Ray >> Color mapping for ACEScg?
    I'm also wondering: in what cases should "ACEScg primaries" be enabled in the VRayBitmap >> Color Space settings? Do I need to do this if "sRGB primaries" is selected in Render Setup >> V-Ray >> Color management? Thank you!

      In Maya 2022 with the default OCIO config the correct setting for gamma in the Vray Render Settings tab is: "Don't affect colors, only adaptation", also set the color mapping to linear multiply. In VFB under the properties tab on the right panel and OCIO selected, use the untonemapped view transform and sRGB (for most people).
      I don't know where you find the equivalent settings for 3Ds Max. Also you might need to restart Maya/Max sometimes Vray does not update the gamma mapping when changing render settings.
      The problem I have with ACES is it's lack of monitor profile support.. only sRGB and AdobeRGB available, what a pain...

    Nice simple introduction to ACES, thank you Denis - what about taking that image, do you have to do anything special when saving it out (i.e. JPG) - does it lose all that lovely detail? I've seen elsewhere that taking these ACES images into Photoshop isn't the best because Photoshop doesn't handle 32bit very well (you lose a lot of Photoshop functionality when working in 32 bit). Look forward to your comments.

    To automatically configure ACEScg workflow in V-Ray and 3ds Max the "V-RayMtl Converter 3" plugin will help you.
    You can see a detailed description of this plugin here: maxtools.3dzver.ru/vmc

    Why is it when I chg to aces, my rendering looks kind of reddish?

  • @wilismatrix9847
    @wilismatrix9847 3 роки тому

    Thank you for the tutorial, I do video color grading for videos and this is very useful for better compositing cg. hence, changing all those parameters in the textures is a lot if there is many textures in the scene. I don't understand why Vray and Autodesk don't make directly some color profiles that matches standard cinema cameras (red, Arri, sony ..etc) to define before starting to work so the compositing would be much easier.

      Why would they make things that would be simple and fast to use if they can make them complicated and tedious ... i mean it just doesn't make any sense :)

  • @robinsoncrusoe8855
    @robinsoncrusoe8855 2 роки тому

    the only thing thats quite tedious with ACES is that if i use a decors lets say from other websites that have tons of textures, means i also need to convert each and every textures to ACES. or are there any workaround it?

    • @DenisKeman
      @DenisKeman  3 роки тому +3

      Click on the save to image button next to the place where you choose the config file and when saving the image choose a Gamma 1.0 value so it doesn't change the image as by default it's using the 2.2 Gamma for the sRGB workflow.

    How can a custom monitor profile be added to the OCIO config so that all the available colors of a wide gamut display are used?
    First of all this ACES system is ridiculous.... A color management system that doesn't support monitor profiles out of the box is not a color management system at all. The ACES configs don't even include AdobeRGB... only sRGB display and a bunch of pro color spaces most people can't use. Tried a few hacks using the 3D LUT maker from Display Cal. The only color accurate result was obtained by hacking the default Maya OCIO Profile. I added another .spi3d LUT to the Adobe RGB Display sections that converts from AdobeRGB to my monitor color profile. This displays the colors with exact accuracy but AdobeRGB is not much different from sRGB, limiting the gamut displayed below my monitors capabilities. So I tried with the ACES 1.2 config and converting from BT2020 to my monitor color profile. Resulting in highly skewed colors, hues are shifted, gamma or something is off... etc... not even close
    Again, does someone know how to properly add a custom monitor profile to the system? Thanks 😁

      At the moment no, but i do think that there is an update on the way that will allow to choose how the textures are imported based on which input you plug in. Remains to be seen when it goes live though

    any chance to use aces with Arnold for 3ds Max like in Maya C4D and Houdini?

    • @DenisKeman
      @DenisKeman  3 роки тому

      Pretty sure you can, though i can't really tell you how as i haven't used Arnold. But based on what you can read on the ACES site it is available for all software packages.

  • @bgtubber

    12:01 How is ACES simpler than using Filmic tone mapping? Filmic tone mapping gives the same results and it takes just two clicks to add it in the VFB. You literally spend 10x the amount of time and clicks just to get your textures to work with ACES and visually the end result is basically the same as using Filmic tone mapping. Am I missing something here?

    • @DenisKeman
      @DenisKeman  3 роки тому +1

      ACES is a standard across multiple platforms, so when it comes up to doing the color grading on a project that might be done my multiple people working in multiple software packages it's really helpful to have a standard that goes across platforms.
      P.S. If you are only working on it yourself you can add the filmic tone mapping and have the similar look, heck you can ever further refine the settings in the tone mapping to get a custom look. So if this is what you need, then by all means do take this approach.

    • @bgtubber
      @bgtubber 3 роки тому

      @@DenisKeman Ah, I see. Yes, I work mostly by myself. I think the Filmic tone mapping approach will suit me best then. Thanks for the clarification!

  • @L3nny666

    You can pretty much recreate the aces look by applying the tonemap in vfb or by exporting in exr and applying the tonemapping in post.
    If you have anything more complex than a product render like an architectural rendering with hundreds of imported assets, it’s Not worth the hassle changing the parameters for every imported map.
    Photoshop doesn’t support aces anyway, just getting 32 Bit exr to work is already stressful enough with ps. But that’s on Adobe for keeping their program completely out of touch with the state of Art.
    So i‘m still Not convinced by the way this got implemented. Why cant it change the maps automatically? Also a lot of assets i bought in packs like vegetation cars etc have their maps plugged into the 3dsmax bitmap node instead of vrays bitmap node, so changing only one material is a timely investment. Completely useless for efficient workflow at the time being of you ask me.
    Nonetheless great video
