Вставка

- Starting with the Incendies was Oscar nomination in 2011, Denis Villeneuve's run has been remarkable. Prisoners, Enemy, Sicario, and now, Arrival. Just having wrapped the sequel to Blade Runner a few days before this interview, he is ready for a rest... but is heading into editing full-time as this posts. He took a moment to discuss it all with David Poland.
Earlier Denis DP/30s: Prisoners - • DP/30 @ TIFF '13: Pris...
Sicario - • DP/30: Sicario, Denis ...

"One day I hope it will not be exotic to make movies about women."
Great quote.
So happy that I'm listening to him talk about Arrival just after he finished shooting Blade Runner 2049. This is the best currently working director in my opinion, and I can't wait for what's next !
i Hope he doesn't work himself to death and burns out.
Not an opinion. It's fact!
Tarantino and Scorsese are still working and making phenomenal films. But yes, Denis is right up there with them right now.
you guys should check out his pre-prisoners films....this guys been at the top for many years to me
Agree. There are other greats, but he adds an interesting and unique voice that nobody else is offering. Very excited for Blade Runner.
21:50 : "They found me. Shit!" (Villeneuve)
I could listen to this man talk for hours.
He dominates this decade quality-wise.
Yep, just constantly delivering.
I know it's Christmas soon but if you, and/or the people reading this comment, haven't watched Polytechnique, the first movie Denis directed about a shooting, go watch it !
It depends on your taste. That's why it's art. Many good directors in this decade. Alexander Payne and many many others. And many good European directors and others: Abdellatif Kechiche, Kelly Reichardt. The list is big. For your tastes in this moment in time he dominates. I don't have a favourite director myself.
_Polytechnique_ est un film géant. So is _Incendies._
I'm very proud of this creator, a Québécois, who I follow since he was a young man, participating in the _Course autour du monde_ series. In 1990 he won the _Course Europe-Asie_ . This was the beginning of a great carreer. Love him !
Ummm PTA??
All his best movies are pre-2010.
this is the best fucking channel on youtube man keep up the good work
Villeneuve is one of the greatest.
Might end up being the GOAT one day.
What is that?
Acronym for Greatest of All Time. Used a lot more in the sports world.
Ouch. He's one of the best in activity, but I cannot go that far. Kubrick and a few others are still in another level.
That's why I said "might... one day." I agree, as far a visual story telling Kubrick in my opinion is the best.
For me. I repeat, for me, he is the greatest director of all time.
Youre a mindless fuckwit, obviously.
@@Sludgee9 why be so rude? Wtf.
Us
@@Sludgee9 you normies are happy enjoying popcorn flicks because....... you've never seen a miracle.
I agree wih you, have you seen Dune!? He's grown so much as a director & storyteller.
arrival.... man what can i say.... one of the best films i have EVER SEEN.
heartbreaking...wondrous.. intriguing.. excellently acted.. amazing effects.. fantastic music...a little scary... realistic.
keep up the absolutely fantastic work denis.
and after seeing sicario and blade runner 2049... he is hands down my favorite director beside steven spielberg.
This man is the best director working right now. Never made anything but a great film.
27:54 "Unless you make a Star Wars movie."
Amazing prediction. Pretty sure you freaked out Denis here, he was most likely already in talks to direct Dune at this point.
Legendary got the rights FOR HIM in Nov 2016.
Obvs Dune inspired Star Wars.
Best director alive today hands down.
After PT Anderson
This guy makes me proud to be from Québec
Another great interview DP/30! I've learned a lot from watching your interviews and this one is no exception.
I LOVE Arrival so much that I read Ted Chiang's short story over the weekend to try to decode how much change he and the scriptwriter made. And I love those changes.
Also great to hear a bit of bonus re Blade Runner 2049.
P.S. Feel so thrill he is a Canadian! :)
Encore mieux, c'est un Québécois ! LOL
I'm very proud of this creator who I follow since he was a young man, participating in the _Course autour du monde_ series. In 1990 he won the _Course Europe-Asie_ . This was the beginning of a great carreer. Love him !
Im here after watching Arrival, I had to look up the director and found out he directed two of my other favorite movies. (Prisoners & Enemy)
Wow his movies are literally perfect in ALL aspects: Meaning, Cinematography, theme, etc.
If you can watch a movie with subtitles (because I assume you don't talk french) Incendies and Polytechnique are two of his best work
DeadStrike99 sweet I'll check it out!
He even directs the photography of the interview lol A skilled director
He talks about movies like they are vulnerable human beings.
He's building quite a catalogue of work. I haven't seen a bad film yet from this guy. Very excited for Blade Runner 2.
Trey Wilson his worst film can still be wayyy better than alot that comes out of Hollywood
I was blown away by "Prisoners" and "Sicario". And of course recently, "Dune".
I honestly believe that Denis' worst film can still be 100 times better than a lot of crap that gets greenlit and funded by Hollywood
True
Denis is the GOAT. Amazing, extraordinary and one of the best Sci fi move of all times. Atmosphere, music, editing, Directing, acting.
Just perfect portrayal of possible future in these turbulent times.
one of my favourite directors at the moment
knowing he doesn't like green screen simply makes me more excited for Blade runner.
Wirdo encías sangrantes even the special effects in some of his films are treated with care and precise direction and BR is his most effects heavy film to date
Well this comment was 3 years ago, did you like Blade Runner 2049? I personally loved it! Can’t wait to see Dune!
thank you sooo much for this mr Poland!
I am pleased that he directs Blade Runner :)
Great interviewer and Denis is legend.
Running it uncut is exactly what I like.
"Montreal is my base". On est fier de toi, Denis!
What he said at the end of the interview is important and admirable: he respects the author and the original story and therefore works toward conveying the great story and its power. He feels that is his responsibility. Not a Michael Bay for sure.
Yes! Been desperately waiting for this interview. I was worried it was never going to come.
"I think that lens went down, is it possible? "
he can't really take his director's hat off.
The man directed Polytéchnique and he gets asked if it's "weird" do direct stories centring on women???
Aidalai. Exactly! There seems to be an obsession about a lack of women in Hollywood. But from what I can see, true artists want to tell interesting stories, regardless of whether they're about men or women. Also, there are plenty of movies and tv shows with J women leads, too numerous to mention here, so I always feel when I hear these questions/comments that it clashes with my experience of reality and I get confused!
best comment ever!
Aidalai. It's actually very smart creatively to make movies right centering around the female condition. Namely because it hasn't been done a lot and there is a large unexplored pool of material to use.
And Incendies! I'm just guessing David hadn't seen all of his films.
15:42 I hate green screen
I love this guy.
So happy to hear him say he hates greenscreen. So do I, you can really tell when things are tangible.
15:45
One of the many reasons why I will forever admire this genius dude.
God I love this man! Truly, has become one of my favorite directors over the last few years. It's pretty weird how quickly he exploded on to the scene.
If he's "exploding" right now, the fuse has been burning for a long time...
First off - I said "on to the scene". The scene indicating English Cinema awareness of him back into 2013 with Enemy.
Second off - Jokes on you! He is really exploding and he's last film was Batman - The Dark Knight Returns!
Third off - Thanks for being sarcastic! Really love a good texting battle now and then.
No sarcasm intended. My comment just means he's been making feature-length movies since 1998. That's what I call a slow-burning fuse.
Excellent interview, thanks for posting
Phew bladerunner 2 is in safe hands. Look forward to seeing his and rogers visions
NO please dont take a year to sleep!!! keep making movies, you are basically the only director whose movies i can watch without being annoyed by trope-overload... you are the best living director, honestly
Folgemilch21 we don't wanna blow out his creative fuse or hell pull a Ridley Scott on us. . geniuses need breaks to perfect their crafts
@@DirByHasanagreed but why they need breaks
@@MrinmayChakravarty-jf4nr hey 7rs never too late haha…serious after Dune pt.2 Denis and his team have earned a little time off 😅 hope Rendezvouz with Rama and Dune Messiah are next on the plate
I do appreciate how he dosen't sound like...a hollywood hack. He sounds like a hard working artist. I'm more than ok with having that guy behing BR2
I think his work reflects his compulsive sense of humanity. The feminine choice of protagonist is a natural and a moral refection on the nurturing reality of how humanity has evolved. Almost all of us were raised by women and he respects this reality with this artistic reminder.
Take a vacation Denis and push-back the treadmill of production and deal only with inspiration.
Good to hear he's not relying on greenscreen in the new bladerunner movie
TheHoruru on set photos show they built actual spinners designed streets in Budapest and LA and bought a crap ton of neon lights I think they even said they will use some forced perspective from the original film
Film won Best visual effects and production design
Love Denis. He's the best, most consistent filmmaker out there right now.
David, I feel like you didn't do much research prior to this, though. I thought you would've at least known Denis' movies for the most part are about women (Polytechnique, Maelstrom, Incendies, Sicario, Arrival). Also, you mentioned that Emily will "miss him" as she's been written out of Soldado?! Stefano Sollima is directing Soldado as we speak.
Denis was never in the picture to direct the Sicario sequel.
Andrew Harris only because he was immediately pulled into production on Blade Runner which career wise would have been the better move...Sollima has Sicario which is still in good hands imo another solid foreign filmmaker
Andrew Harris even BR2049 is said to have critical female roles opposite Ryan and Harrison
Sollima is the best for action/thriller movies right now. Gomorrah and Suburra (not forgetting his earlier work) are incredible. Talk about tense and gritty!
Best Opening-Shot in a Video ever.
Arrival is my personal best film of all time. And I watch alot of movies.
Let us keep this video with 0 dislikes, and show our love to David Poland and Denis! Peace&Love
21:55 is hilarious.
He's so cool.
Love his accent.
Love his accent. Part III
Love his accent part IV
J'aime son accent: Origins
Personally I think Paul Thomas Anderson is the best filmmaker of our time but this guy has sure made some of the best in the past couple years in my opinion.
he seems to be amazing in every way, even his face features are so unusual and fascinating. It's an idiotic comparison, but he resembles a wise kind dog to me, haha! In a good way, of course. Anyway it's really captivating and soothing to hear him talk.
Ira Levadnyaya I could see him as a wise Canadian blood hound just ruling avant garde cinema
Lol i loved the blur photo btw
such an expert. makes great films. he'll be around for a while!
His films look like what I imagine Romantic artists would have created had there been films back then.
I love your intimist interviews. Thank you
Denis is a wonderful director and seems like a wonderful guy arrival was superb made me feel the same way I felt when watching 2001 a space odyssey for the first time sheer wonderment and awe. im so glad he is directing blade runner 2049 from the trailer he,deakins and Johanson are working there magic once again blade runner is my favourite sci fi movie of all time and Denis was probably the only guy I wanted directing it and the cast and team he has assembled on it is mind blowing I hope it does the first film justice I really do.
Josh Ramsay Arrival for me was not in million years anything like watching 2001 for the first. 2001 blew my mind, but I felt I'd seen Arrival before.
@@lewiscranston881 to me Arrival was better experience , i felt all feelings watching it, films are about us, but in core of Arrival is love, and i like that more, and i like that more.
crypto hodler fair dos. It’s true that 2001 doesn’t really have much of human level and is more about the big questions of the universe. So I understand that.
@@lewiscranston881 yes, and im more touched by that human aspect , love which for me arrival is about. Uses time and alien invasion perfectly. I do admit Kubrick 2001 is amazing film, i love it also but its cold movie, and does not touch me.
For me most beautiful question if you know how the story ends would you do it anyway. Its because of love we do it, i can not express well using english , but for me that is essence of life , more than biology and science .
For me always when talking about Kubrick everyone go to movie is 2001, for me personally is always Dr.Strangelove, because i find that one
27:40 This man literally agreed on camera that he did all these previous films just to prepare for DUNE ☠️
Honest king lol
21:55
Was not expecting the autistic cat to be here
BEST CHANNEL EVER
DEEPLY
Please let him direct the Mistborn books adaptation
His films are amazing!
He's needs some time for himself. Enough time for creative influence or inspirations. The amount of work he does is undoubtedly exhausting. And that's going to show in story structure.
Clarke Wolf shit goes to sleep underground indie Canadian filmmaker then wakes up director to the sequel of one of the most popular Sci Fi movies of the 21st century
I recently subscribed to this channel. How does it work? How are these interviewers able to meet with so many actors, filmmakers? It's amazing
I love him, that's It.
Still love him, great artist.
agreed! Can't wait for his Cleopatra movie.@@jessica5497
the best
As good as Denis is,but to call him best director or one of the greatest tells you dearth of real quality today
I like the way he pronounces "assembly".
Finally.
Fingers crossed for BR - Baseball Bat Ready ;)
He said in a french interview that when he found out a Blade Runner sequel was in the plans, he was so against it he cried. I'm sure he will pay respect to the material, I have no doubt.
I'd like to see him make CBM. Not that I'm a fan of CBMs just more of a super fan of Villenevue
Denis seems to be better with time. Maelstrom and un 32 aout sur terre were'nt so great. Then come Polytechnique, Incendies. Prisoners, Arrival, Sicario. I hopes BR2 will be great.
awwwwww yussssss
How do you pronounce his name?
Denee Vilnoh
Thank you it always bugged me
Imagine "the knee bill the" and replace the consonants by D, N, V and N. Then add "v".
Thanks, why don't you pronounce Denis as Denis?
If you mean why the s is silent, it happens a lot in french.
Nolan doesn't hold a candle to Villeneuve.
Rezjamin Eugenio theyr both great, just different. dont forget what Nolan did with Batman, that trilogy is and will allways be a masterpiece.
I agree with you. Although Batman Begins is SPECIAL.
Why compare? I love both for different reasons
Both completely different directors
ISFJ with developed Fe, Ti and Ne

I like Villeneuve's films but there's no way I'm seeing the Blade Runner sequel. Blade Runner is perfect and it'll stay that way for me. I'm not fucking up another of my favourite movie's legacy with some bullshit prequel/sequel cashing in à la Prometheus, Matrix sequels, Star Wars prequels, Terminator sequels, etc. Not anymore. No way.
Dedric I hear ya. It won't be like the total recall reboot. A half assed action movie riding on the name alone. If you haven't seen his other movies go check out sicario, prisoners , polytechnique, enemy. He is a master. And just listen to him answer questions. He takes the time to give in depth/thoughtful responses. Blade runner 2049 may not be the masterpiece we think or meet the expectations that have been set but it will be a great movie. He has yet to miss with the movies I've seen.
Love Denis. He's the best, most consistent filmmaker out there right now.
David, I feel like you didn't do much research prior to this, though.
