  • From April 2016 I travelled from Singapore to Denmark overland solo over 26,000km, 18 countries and 3 months to visit the four-time world's best restaurant, Noma. You can read more about my trip at www.allroadsleadtonoma.com. A year ago today I arrived at the restaurant.
    It had always been a dream of mine to visit Noma, so when a friend jokingly suggested we try and get a table, I said "yeah, and I'll get there by land" (I was studying in Singapore) ...and then I realised I wasn't joking. I decided to go all-out and make a website for it.
    How much did it all cost? About $4,500 AUD ($3,500 USD) for 3 months on the road. This includes accommodation, travel, visas, gear and food. Keep in mind I was travelling very cheaply: hostels, hitch-hiking, couchsurfing, street food - I slept outside a few times, so that was free.
    Was the meal worth it? Yes!! Without a doubt the best meal I've ever had - check out my blog post about it for pictures (allroadsleadtonoma.com/day-93-....
    Thanks to everyone I met along the way - whether I met you in a hostel or you let me sleep on your couch or you gave me a ride, the most memorable parts of this trip were the people I met.
    I do not own any of the soundtrack, property and rights for audio go to Depeche Mode and Iggy Pop.

    this route sounded so familiar, especially the destination. Then I remembered, we were stuck together all night on the turkish-bulgarian border waiting for our broken-down train and ended up doing shots of jack.
    nice to see you made it to Denmark.

      So how did you ask your supervisor to let you go on vacation this long???
      😂
      I mean if you work in a company, no way someone can be on leave for vacation this long.
      Unless your self employed.
      We all dreamed of this moment that we can travel around the world without having to worry about work and other things but only few people can make it.
      We're all jealous of you guys, man.
      Just remember this.
      Most people are not as free as you, man.
      And it's a shame 😞

      @@norpriest521 Here in Australia if you save up your annual leave over a few years you could easily do a trip like this.
      Mandated by law, all employees at any business are given at least 4 weeks of paid leave a year if the employee is working full-time.
      Some business even give more days/weeks to entice people to work for/stay at that business. How much you're paid depends on the employment contract and your industry's Modern Award (a workplace agreement put in place by the government).
      Your paid annual leave accumulates as you work and accrues over the years, if you want you can take the 4 weeks in a block or take a week here and there or if your company allows it you can save it for longer trips (although some companies "strongly persuade" you to take at least 2 weeks of leave so it doesn't accrue as much).
      Leave has to be approved however by your company but once it is your company can't just revoke the approval and they cannot refuse a request without a valid reason. If you quit or even if you're fired your company has to pay out any outstanding leave.
      Also your company cannot fire you without a valid reason and taking leave definitely isn't one, if your company has been found to have breached workplace agreements they can be fined and sued by the government on behalf of you, on top of having to backpay what they owe to you.

    • @HuyLy94
      @HuyLy94 5 років тому +1

      @@KordasNJR Yeah most private companies here expect you to take the 2 weeks I mentioned and also the 2 over the Christmas/new year period (you don't have to but and can take leave without pay if the company shuts down over that period) so most people don't accrue that much, however most will let you to not take that and accrue it if you put a request in a year out for leave for say 6-8 weeks so the most I've seen anyone in the public sector take is 8 weeks. However public sector doesn't care as much so you can accrue it over decades and take years of leave at a time

    I'm planning to travel the other way round next year. We are going to visit relatives in Krasnojarsk and I want to take the transsiberian to Beijing, with stops in Irkutsk and Monggolia as well!
    Do you have any tips like what to see and where to stay?

    • @ThatGuyYouArent
      @ThatGuyYouArent  7 років тому +4

      I can highly recommend Irkutsk, especially in the summer. I stayed in the Belka hostel in Listvyanka, a beautiful wooden building. Make sure you try the smoked omul and golomyanka, they're amazing. I wrote more about that here: allroadsleadtonoma.com/day-33-irkutsk-lake-baikal-and-smoked-fish/
      In Mongolia I stayed at the UB Guesthouse (hostel of choice for Peace Corps volunteers), which was great. Would recommend a Terelj National Park overnight trip, and something longer if you have time (usually either west to the steppes or south to the Gobi)
      Beijing, make sure you eat chuar with a large Tsingdao!

    Awesome video!
    When and how did you research where you were going to stay each day? Any tips for a first time traveler/backpacker hoping to do a similar kind of trip? Also, how was your time spent abroad in Singapore? What University did you stay at and would you recommend studying abroad there?

    • @dakikilolohu
      @dakikilolohu 7 років тому

      Very convincing! Few more questions-
      When did you have time to travel so much during the academic semester? I read you traveled all over SEA during the exchange.
      Was it fairly feasible to go somewhere new each weekend? Any places would you recommend for only a spring semester trip?
      At what point in the application process did you decide where you were going to live (on campus)? Finally, what classes did you take and are there any you recommend taking?

    • @ThatGuyYouArent
      @ThatGuyYouArent  7 років тому +5

      The trick is optimising your timetable - I only had classes Tues-Wed-Thurs, so I effectively had a 4-day weekend every week. And there are quite a few opportunities to travel longer: mid-semester break, recess week ('exam study' week), mid-year break, public holidays etc. I was lucky, though, in that I was studying on pass/fail, so my GPA didn't transfer back to my uni degree in Australia. I just had to pass my subjects in Singapore - which I did!
      100% top recommendation is Penang, Georgetown. Best food in the world, in my opinion. The southern Thai islands are also very nice - Koh Tao, Koh Phangan, Koh Samui etc. Hoi An in Vietnam, the Hai Van pass. Sapa and Hanoi up north. Tioman Island in Malaysia is super close and very pretty, too.
      There's a housing application *about* 1mo before you arrive in Singapore (can't 100% remember exactly when it was). Stay in UTown if you get in to NUS. If you're studying business, consumer behaviour is excellent, as is negotiations and bargaining. Can also highly recommend new venture creation and new product development. Get involved with clubs on-campus - radio is fun. Food in Japan is also a fun class. Hope you get in!
