Beth, you’ve definitely heard Mickey Thomas before, although you may not have known it was him. He sang on “Fooled Around and Fell in Love” by Elvin Bishop; and also the Starship hits “Nothin’s Gonna Stop Us Now”, “ Sara” and “We Built this City”. His voice is VERY high!

Mickey always had such a clean, perfectly pitched, well in the upper register type of voice; as well as the delivery he gave during live performances. He definitely was never given the recognition he deserved for the outstanding talent & vocal gift he was given at birth, and practiced in-depth to hone it into becoming of the best front-man rock band vocalists of the 70's-80's era.
Haven't heard of Mickey Thomas? He's on the Mount Rushmore of great vocalists with Steve Perry, Brad Delp and Freddy Mercury. Mickey's talent really shined when he was with Elvin Bishop, and not just in Fooled around and fell in love. But some other Elvin songs feature Mickey's lead and background vocals. You can hear the gospel influence in his singing. By far one of the best to ever hold a mic
There's a clip on a Howard Stern episode where he comes into the studio and sings Fooled around and Fell in Love with just an acoustic guitar accompanying him. Pretty amazing.
I agree completely. Mickey is an elite vocal talent. And he still has the range after many decades. There's a video of a recent Starship performance at Busch Gardens in FL where he's still in top form.
This is truly astonishing for a live rendition of this. Not many people can sing like Mickey Thomas. But if you get a chance, definitely go check out the studio cut of this, although this is pretty close, but it's just a bit better fidelity and he hangs up on that E5 quite a bit more at the end rather than in this he chose to stay down on the B4 for some of that, although definitely he still ended up there a lot. But you would love it I'm positive.
I forget that the younger folks aren't automatically immersed in the classic music of the 70s. He did the lead vocals for Elvin Bishop's "Fooled Around And Fell In Love" and later in the 80s with Starship dueted with Grace on "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" of Mannequin movies fame.
*Mickey Thomas' unique, extraordinary singing voice and amazing talent are almost "criminally" underrated. Really. You hear him singing, "I fooled around and fell in love," and you become his fan instantly (unless you don't have good taste for romantic songs)* 😁
Hi Beth, I think you could enjoy Elvin Bishops "Fooled around and Fell in Love". There are good examples of Mickey's use of head and chest voice and an example, where he actually ran out of air. Always a useful resource, for a teacher of voice.
Beth this is one of my favorite songs, I was always impressed with Mickey's talent. You need to react to his lead vocals on Elvin Bishop's "Fooled Around and Fell in Love". Love your channel!!!

Your 'Ann Wilson' is in fact Grace Slick, the drive and huge talent behind Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship and Starship. Testament to this is the later departure of Micky Thomas to a solo project which save from one single 'It's Not Enough', completely bombed. Grace was of course the lead vocal behind the legendary 'White Rabbit'.

The piano intro of Jane was their answer to the piano intro of Cold As Ice by Foreigner.
Such a great track! And Mickey is a really good vocalist. There is a great live vid on UA-cam of him doing Fooled Around And Fell In Love with Elvin Bishop. I think that's a Midnight Special TV recording. 1975.

I am so glad you reacted to this song! I have always been so surprised that no singer on any of the talent shows like American Idol have never picked this song to sing because wow does it ever let you showcase your vocal range and singing ability. As always thanks for the great reaction and keep ROARIN' !!! Another song that is surpisingly amazing for vocals is a song called Baby Love by Mothers Finest... It is a total classic
Grace was Jefferson Airplane's second female singer. She replaced Signe Anderson who only recorded one album with the Airplane. (Ironically Anderson died on the same day as Paul Kantner.)
His voice is still one of the best, always considered it unique and amazing!!! This song has such a badass groove to it! If I had that type of pitch and range I would have never lived past 30.
When they added Thomas, and guitarist Craig Chicaro (He was only a puppy, but as u saw, could already play his azz off) thier sound became a lot more power-driven, and it was all good. crucial to the 80's success.
What a great song, one of Starship's best! The unbelievable voice of Mickey Thomas, and the great Craig Chaqico ( one of my fave solos). Craig is soooo good, he is into acoustic stuff the last I heard...the great music I grew up with, not much from today's artists can compete! ❤️
This song was my introduction to all things Jefferson. The album it's from Freedom at point zero is a masterpiece. In the late 80's when i grew my hair and starting drinking a certain kind of tea the Airplane were my favourite along with the Dead, the Band and Blood sweat and tears. Great memories man lol
Same here :) Bought Freedom at Point Zero after hearing Jane at a party and the whole thing is wonderful. Fading Lady Light is probably my favourite song because, as all good music does, it has an emotional connection for me.
If you haven't watched or reacted to Elvin Bishop" Fooled Around and fell in love"live on the Midnight Special 1976 check it out Mickey Thomas on lead vocals showing out even if you've heard the song but haven't watched that performance check it out
Diaphragm control, as with Steve Perry. To sing this song, one should warm up to Sara, or even Fooled Around and then come back to Jane. Those steps primarily come from squeezing up the air, letting the abs help out. Vibrato can be learned or should be controlled or moderated. It distracts from otherwise proper use of your tools. Craig was awesome on this song.
Professor of Rock has a really good interview with Mickey Thomas and where he started. Sung with R and B band in San Francisco where he was tutored by the lead singer.
Such a great rock song! Pretty hard rock for that band. That guy’s voice is right up there with Brad Delp’s of Boston. The guitar player, Craig Chaquico, is amazing as well.
If you do a reaction, as suggested by others,to Elvin Bishop's song Fooled Around and Fell In Love that features Mickey on vocals, watch the Midnight Special performance. He lets it rip on that one.
Another of theirs to try, where the lady singer, Grace Slick, sings duet with Mickey Thomas, is Stranger. Watch the official studio track, you get to see them singing it. Great vocals, great song, and you see her magnetic charisma (and she looks like Frankenstein's bride!😂).
I love the reaction Beth! I had pretty much the same reaction back in the day when this was released. I had to get the album, Freedom At Point Zero, and found that Jane was not the best track on the album. The album is "All Killer, No Filler". Every track is great. The lady up there is the one and only Grace Slick, vocalist for Jefferson Airplane and Jefferson Starship.
Apparently true story: Toto was congratulated by record management on the success of their new single "Jane", confusing "Jane" which sounded similar to Toto's "Hold The Line" because of the piano riff along with high pitched male vocal.
Haha, listening to this I was thinking myself how similar this song was to songs by Toto. Piano, high vocals, slashing guitars. Both wonderful, in any case.

Love how you recognize the unique talent of the singers voice ❤
Another great from Jefferson starship is miracles. Please review
Mickey Thomas is soooo good.
You can really feel that one!
Hey Beth, heres a shorter song that I know you will love the vocals on. Its 7 Bridges Road by The Eagles. Its amazing!!!!
Mickey Thomas sang Fooled Around and Fell in Love
Oh, have you done Fooled Around And Fell In Love? Its maybe even better
Toto is little league Jefferson starship is the Yankees or cardinals !
@@kenwink6353 toto is not little league
Great song! One of their best!
Really interesting how you explain the difficulties in the runs by singing them. Thanks !!!
I never realized back in the day what an absolute banger "Jane" is. Great song.
