Thousand Sons got more nerfs than Eldar did. The strat change was enormous for how they play because all our trickery was locked behind not battle tactics strats. And then every single unit we’d ever want to play with that wasn’t a tank went up in points by a pretty solid chunk.

I think it really depends on the army you play. If you play Sisters of Battle, 10th edition feels apocalyptic. The dataslate doesnt even help with the core issues and GW misunderstanding of the army.

This. I'm playing Orks but my main local playing partner plays Sororitas, and let me tell you, it's awful. No reliable ST 12 weaponry, Meltas nerfed to oblivion, no synergies, irritating restrictions on leader attachment possibilities and a general lack of rules. Sisters back then were "weak datasheets, strong rules", now they're "weak-ish datasheets, less-than-mediocre rules", which makes for a struggling position power-wise. If you're not opting for a Vindicare and a Knight.

I think the changes are good and bad.
Devastating Wounds definitely needed to be reworked because some of those big guns just wiping entire squads were just ridiculous. On the other hand, punch through wounds were kind of cool. I think they could have done both and changed certain models but not others by introducing a second keyword to replace Devastating Wounds on certain weapons and abilities. However, that would have required a change of a whole lot of datasheets and I think GW steered away from that as much as possible.
On the other hand, the change of Stratagems is really bad IMHO. It just takes away a lot of what makes specific factions the way they are, and makes some of the models which are supposed to be the leaders kind of worthless. Space Marine Captains and Necron Overlords are suddenly a whole lot less attractive than they are supposed to be. I understand why they did that, but if Overwatch was that much of a problem they should have just added another restriction to Overwatch so you really can only Overwatch once per turn, rather than nerfing almost every other stratagem and a bunch of models.

I'm really only interested in Grey Knights. With the points decreases, my list got about 250 more points to play with. I was already a few points under cap, so I can add nearly 300 points to my army.
That's 2 units of Strike marine equivalents or 1 Terminator unit/Paladin unit/Dread Knight and a character.

Honestly they went after desolation squads harder than eldar to the point you'd think they were ruining the game when really they were one of the few things capable of keeping eldar in check (although only in deathwatch). They were marines best unit because of how underwhelming most space marine units are, they were only really busted in deathwatch where they could apply the custom rounds, however that was fixed in the dataslate. They really didn't need to be dumpstered as hard as they were, the deathwatch change would have been enough, it seems like they had 3 options for nerfing them, either raise points, cap unit size, or nerf deathwatch, but rather than picking one they went with all three and it's completely ruined the unit, they're barely even viable for casual play given how expensive they are to run.
I was a bit skeptical to the changes towards guard but it actually seems as if it's brought them to a healthier point, not being as reliant on artillery lists and going back to much more of a combined arms playstyle. I also think imperial knights were supressing them a bit. Not surprised by sisters though, they need to be votann levels of cheap and they just aren't there sadly. The issue with their detachment rule is they basically don't have one until they start losing, and it's not enough to even the playing field. They need the +1 to wound more than the +1 to hit, but by the time they get it the unit is so depleted it doesn't make a difference. Their whole army strategy is basically reliant on rolling hot because they just don't have the strength on their weapons to wound most high toughness units effectively. I think GW just need to contend with the fact that faction abilities that benefit you only when you're disadvantaged just don't work in the game, and almost always result in your army being at a permanent disadvantage vs armies that have their faction abilities at all times unless the ability can somehow make up for the losses, but they never do, and they never account for the fact that they can easily be countered by overkilling units.

For Sisters (and Crusher Stampede Tyranids) getting stronger when hurt causes serious issues in an edition where wiping a unit out rather than damaging it is the norm. The fact that a Sisters unit is more likely to be vaporized rather than just damaged really makes their detachment rule weak. Never mind their damage output.
Still not sure why GW can’t seem to realize reliability in a game with random mechanics is a HUGE advantage, and the Eldar get two good ones? Sisters have practically the same fate dice rule, but not much to use them on - so it doesn’t look like a problem, but Eldar are basically showing what the Sisters could be if they had decent stuff. And then on top of it, Eldar detachment rule is one set of rerolls each time a unit attacks, and THEN they still have Phantasm? Even nerfed, that strategy is still too good. It’s just too much reliability for one team to have. They’d have to nerf their gear down to Sisters level to get it all under control. (And they get those dice front loaded? How much more do you need?). It’s just like - wow - that there weren’t even more hits to the Eldar. (And the Dark Eldar getting hit with collateral damage from Eldar success sucks even worse.)

7:20 In defense (humm... attack?) of Admech, their lists didn't drop by 100-200pts due to troops as no one was taking more than 1 or 2 units of them. This correction removed the tragic comedy that was their previous 100/125pts cost, but the units themselves are still do-nothings, with exception of a very niche tactic of spamming 3-4 Duneriders with Vanguard inside, but 99.9% of players won't ever own that many transports to cheese it out. Average Admech armies will be able to fit a couple more units in their lists just like most

Games Workshop: designs broken game, sells broken game, players buy broken game, try and make broken game work, find out game is broken, then hopes the next fumble-thumbed "fix" will magically make the broken game, whole, and not just more and more broken.
The core rulebook is SCRAP before the first codex comes out!
How anyone could see 10th as anything else than a truly embarassing failure defeates me, almost as much as why people want to play this dull tedious book-keepers version of what USED to be a dynamic and exciting sci-fi wargame, not just an excuse to use all your toys with ridiculous armies lacking any essential balance in the FIRST place. Its certainly stupifying dull to watch 10th battle reports, 3.5 hour plus for a 2K points game, what is this, 2nd edition? 25 years of progress wiped away to make the game a turgid slog again. @@malakimphoros2164 dont agree with that, game used to be able to handle much larget armies with far greater efficiency, what I see, even at tournament level, is the only way to make the game work is for players to have an intense discussion about rules interactions and make sure they are both playing the same game at every step through every stage, its a massive time waste and certainly doesnt respect players time, these systems work great working in the background in a computer game, indeed, computer simulations of 10th edition work fine, but dumping all this mental load on players looking to chill and have a good time is frankly deriliction of game design. I would hate to try and recruit new gamers if the only tool I had was an intro game of 10th, and even if I did get the core rules across it would completely fail to prepare those gamers for what the game is actually like to try and run even casually, especially when you dont know the army you are going to face and both players have to try to work out how all the interactions fit together. "army size", what a joke, the game struggles to run with just a few models a side, agreed, but thats not the fault of the troops choices, but the system they are trying to be a balanced part of: they are not! For the most part they are just disposable "bad" choices when the meta is chasing as much damage output matched with tankyness as possible, whose only viable function is standing on an objective doing nothing all game.

    • @captainweekend5276
      @captainweekend5276 10 місяців тому +4

I agree with the sentiment, but the reality is it was too light a touch, looking at the data of events that used the new points and dataslate their stats are practically unchanged, which is unsurprising given they did not receive any nerfs to their own rules aside from phantasm. The core rules changes to devastating were meant to target them but still nerfed them for everyone else as well. Whilst eldar did see some points bumps, so did almost every other army, even below mid tier factions like marines and guard saw their best units nerfed. Eldar are just going to pivot to the units that didn't see points hikes (which there were plenty of) and a lot of units were just made slightly more appropriately costed and will still be competitively viable.
Also an army that fills the top spot and stops any other from getting there is the definition of oppressive, you're trying to have your cake and it eat too, you can't have eldar just sit at the top and have them not be oppressive to the other factions. In an ideal game the top spot should not depend on the faction being played, but the person playing, all factions should have around an equal win rate, there shouldn't even be a "top spot".

@Dorsidwarf that's not the point though is it? The goal should be to get armies as equal as possible rather than have the attitude of "well there's inevitably going to be a top spot so eldar may as well fill it". Also Arks of Omen 9th edition had some of the healthiest balance 40k has ever had competitively, outside of a few outliers almost every army was viable and the leading factions were reigned in enough that almost any army could win a GT. Listening to this makes me relatively glad i stopped playing some 2 or 3 editions ago. Way too many extra rules piled on top of rules ON TOP of rules. I miss the days i could just pick up my suitcase, slap a list together with what i wanted to play in 10min and throw dice 20min later. Not it feels or sounds like a game of RISK where you have to plan the entire game before you even took your troops out of the box.

Tournament scene is huge, yeah it's a minority compared to all other players, but was GW in first place that copy the environment of the Competitive scene because they were very popular, and meta dictates the sells of models, so in the end most players around the world buy minis because they are good in play, than the players that but minis because they looks cool. I feel the worst thing about strategems, beyond bolting on a magic the gathering card game where none was needed (but cardboard is even more profitable to sell that minis I suppose?...), is they squeeze all the character out of the armies, especially certain ones. Orks, Tyranids, Khorne Beserkers, none of these armies were ever based around standing around on a point doing nothing dinging up imaginary numbers "to win" and seeing armies played this way, it removes a vital veneer of credibility the game used to have, its no longer a tabletop WAR game defined by what the minitatures are and what they do, but an abstract reconstruction of a computer game. Indeed, may as well have a little man with mechadendrites walk up and build a structure on the objectives, its that much of a rip of of Dawn of War blended with DOTA. But stealing the clothes of a competitive game does not a competitive game make, especially when games workshops idea of balancing is really just release it and be damned and just react to players whining about what's screwed up the most... the recent balance "fix" is either not going to shift eldar off the top spot at all, or if it does, be because other armies have been made in to the "monster" faction instead, possibly Tau with their 20% ish across the board points drop. This isnt balance fixing, its pissing in the wind hoping it at least distracts players onto something else than how screwed up Eldar were...

GW don't fix or ruin the game, they do what they've always done: selling great minis, developing rich lore, and writing some ruleset to have fun by simulating incredible battles in the 41st millennium.
Then people decided that they needed competitive games to crush their opponents with lore-inaccurate lists and barely painted minis.
So I know it's an unpopular opinion and I'm going to get yelled at, but I would say that people ruined 40k, not GW.

Only partially true. GW could do a better job, and it really really hurts when your T Sons army you have been with for years got decent, and then it got burned to the ground harder than Eldar did. I didn’t ruin it, I didn’t even take an “optimized” army because I didn’t understand how they were doing it and was bringing some anti tank vehicle support.
Yes, competitive players found the nasty exploits for most armies. But GW basically wrote two or three different games (compare pre dataslate Votann or death guard … to Eldar)

From what you’re saying, 40k has been broken from the very start. I wouldn’t agree that this has broken anything, but it has been like that since 2nd ed at least. Nothing has been broken by this generation of players. And if they did, they are playing GW’s rules. I’m not suggesting GW broke anything either - this is just rage bait - if it was remotely true the game would have died decades ago.
And regarding painted minis - people want to play with their minis asap. That’s fine. Some even will have stand-ins for other minis. That is ok too. Only kids and adults without kids will really be able to spend all the time they want on painting (or anything!).
It shouldn’t be a game that tries to prevent dads (and mums) from playing - that skews the adult demographic away from mature individuals.
If I came across someone who stated a similar annoyance, I’d pack up and go. They are the opposite of enjoyment in a game that is supposed to be fun and social.
In a way though, it is the players who will do damage to any game. Players who gatekeep and tell other players they are doing it wrong will push players out and keep new players from entering.
Let people have fun - it doesn’t hurt you one bit.
