      You absolutely can DIY electrical, provided you draft a plan fallow Codes and get inspections,
      Do not buy cheap parts go with a all
      Copper busbar power panels like GE there is a lot of math power loads and so on to figure, do yourself a favor for resale value run a few 240 outlets and over size the box. Like a 200 amp main power panel 40 spaces. Do LED over head large area lights run both 120 and 240 circuits.
      What you use as a garage area
      Id use as a wood working shop.
      But what size is your main meter on the house, mine is rated @ 200 amps thats not big enough for a shop add on but the service to that power meter is 400amps. You may want a separate meter on the shop.
      These cheap electronic power power meters can only pass 200 amps unless its a comercial unit.
      But those use 3 phase.
      Yours is only 2 phase. 3 phase uses less energy.

      Take it through the attic, drop it down the other side wall in garage and drill out the bottom (id probably contract that) so you don't have the conduit outside the house. better than tunneling under the driveway and gives that clean look.

    Get with your electric utility and see how much it would be to run a new service to the shops own 200 amp meterbase. Will very likely be cheaper by the time you get the parts and labor to run it from the house. Then you'll have enough capacity to do whatever you want in the shop without compromising or overloading the house electrical system.

    Like other comments stated, you should absolutely run a separate 200 Amp service to the shop, you don't want to be tied into the house or limited on what you can run without overloading.

    Upgrade your service to a meter base/panel at 400A as the main breaker can be there Square D QO
    Inside your garage will be the next panel that is rated at 400 amps and you can put a 200A breaker to feed the garage and go through the attic like you said and put that sub panel on the exterior and feed in so the main breaker for the sub panel is easily accessible if needed
    Or, 400A at your meter like above but bore under the driveway and head to west side as it will cost more, but it will be more presentable
    All 240V you can figure out where you want it and for any lifts the boxes can be places overhead and ensure strain relief is used so the SO cord can hang with no issues and go right into the lift.
    So many options. I'll reach out to you to help

    We just finsihed our custom home build at the begining of the year.... some suggestions from what I did:
    -Termite Treatment: buy 2 gallons of BoraCare concentrate which will yield 12 gallons of finished solution and apply to all the wood framing and sheathing from 5ft high down to the foundation. Let dry 2 days and keep repeating until you're out of solution. Add marking dye which will turn green.
    -Cat6: Consider installing a weather proof exterior box to route internet from main house to the shop with a buried Cat6 in conduit in the ground. Route Cat6 to some interior walls and up to the ceiling for WiFi Mesh setup and to an interior Leviton in-wall box for a switch and a NVR... Run 2 Cat6 from the exterior box along with an empty flexible conduit with a pull string (smurf tubing) over to the interior inwall structured media enclosure. Emtpy conduit for if you want to run another cable or a Fiber connection to the shop in the future... Also run Cat 6 to the roof eaves so you can run PoE network security cams.
    -50amp RV exterior service plug
    Great job so far !!!

  • @Cr480mx
    @Cr480mx 4 місяці тому +4

    This would be a simple sub panel install, bore under and across the driveway and throw the panel on the opposite side where you cant see it. It may be a few extra bucks. But youll be thankful you spent the extra couple bucks to do it clean and right.
    Another option, depending on where your power comes in from is a whole nother service (so another meter) and you can get a full 200amp service and not worry about overloading your current panel. Especially during summer if you ever decide to add in some sort of HVAC. It is pricey, but it might be the best option depending on your plans.
    Whatever you do, get a load calculation done on your current panel to see how much your utilizing and how much power is availble and whether or not your current and future plans will fit into what's available. The Sparky, if he's worth anything, will be able to advise various options to fit your needs/budget.

    I used to do tv cable in Texas back in the day. We would use a pvc pipe with sprayer nozzle on one end and garden hose attachment on another end and force water under driveways and sidewalks through the Texas clay to borrow that PVC pipe under the driveway and then we would run our wires through the pipe when it came out the other end we would take off the nozzle and take off the garden hose attachment and a pipe under the driveway sidewalk.

    How the electrical would be run is something you should have considered when pouring the slab. You could have put in conduit coming up the slab so your panel is on the inside. Also plumbing would've been good also. Once your shop is up and running you'll realize a restroom and a sink would be nice.

    Unless you are getting a separate service, the connection to the shop would not be made at the meter head as you described. The connection till be made on the homes main panel or on the homes sub-panel if it were to have one. If it doesn’t already have the sub panel the panel installed in the shop would be the homes sub panel. Re: said sub panel, it would be best to install it so that it’s on the inside shop. It may very well be code in your county that the shops panel be “indoors” so to speak. I would do a quick search to see if there is a fellow YT that is also a licensed electrician and work out a collab or something. There is a great Electrician/YT in Texas but he is out of the Austin area. Maybe there is one in the DFW area. Keep up the hard work. You’re doing great. Fellow HOA wanted man. Godspeed.

    Can you bring separate service in from the rear of the property to just serve the shop?
    Depending on how much power you want at the shop, you may have to upgrade your house service, panel, and the utility may have to upgrade the feeder size.

  • @captainmorgan315
    @captainmorgan315 3 місяці тому

    The conduit will go from the main breaker box, not electrical meter. (On the exterior) Easiest and least expensive is conduit on the surface of the drywall in the garage, exit low on the opposite side, then into the dirt to the shop where you will put another breaker box. If you don’t want the conduit visible then you’re cutting into the drywall and foundation and repairing. If you want to go across the driveway then you’ll have a concrete patch that won’t match.

    LSH, the advice below is sound but you may not know what they are referring to. The meter on the outside of your house is a 200amp meter. That means ALL the electric in your house, garage and everywhere is limited to 200amps by that meter. You absolutely positively DO NOT want your shop to be powered off that same 200amp meter service. You want a separate meter service for your shop. Others have stated to use a separate 200amp. That would probably do for many people. However, I’d personally put in 2 200amp or 1 400amp service (400 amp has been on back order a while and isn’t cheap). Why? My shop has a lot of 220v tools. A table saw, an air compressor, mini splitter (an A/C unit), a lift, etc. You think you have enough until you have a couple 220v things running and it blows fuses. Also, make sure your electrician pulls ALL 12/3 wire. Don’t let them pull 14/3. Finally, make sure he drops several 220v outlets for you around the shop. I’d personally put 2 on each of the 3 main walls.
    Thanks for building a shop with a door big enough for my big truck. When the weather gets bad, I’ll swing by for a quick service out of the rain. Your HOA will freaking love it 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

    Just put 200 amp service to my shop and wired myself on my 30x70 build on a budget. I was 2800 total into everything with 240 plugs for welding, lifts, 35 120v 20 amp circuits, hyperlite exterior lights and ceiling lights etc.
    My only part of advice is the box needs to be easily and quickly accessible from a door. So you or a fire fighter does not have to enter a door and walk across the shop to a shut off etc. place it right next to one of the doors for easy access.

    I’m a licensed electrician with Texas and with the amount of power you want in your shop, I would recommend getting another service that will come from the transformer to the shop. Let me know if you need any help.

  • @christopherhess6715
    @christopherhess6715 4 місяці тому

    Look around the front of your yard, there will be either a transformer or what's called a pedestal, which is an electrical distribution hub. It would be green and have some signage indicating there is electricity inside. If its on the same side of your drive way as the shops outside wall, it would be easiest to have your electric utility provider run a new service directly to the shop. May be a little more expensive, but you would be much happier in the long run as having a 200 amp service dedicated for the shop would be a much better situation.

  • @Amxracer
    @Amxracer 4 місяці тому

    Cool 😎 . Definitely run a separate 200 amp service to the shop . That’s what I did to mine and the service run was in the back of the shop to the road to the for the electric company. I also ran a 12/2 wire from the house to a dedicated outlet in the garage for the intercom and some category 5 wire for a security system. I did run a gas line from the house to the shop for heat .

    I’d definitely look at upgrading your electrical to 200A. If the house is 200a then 100a to the shop. Or if you hit the shop first then the house. I’m assuming you have under ground services to the house. So I’d recommend upgrading that to 200A or minimum 150a. better safe then sorry. As for running it to your shop. I’d recommend looking at ACWU it’s teck cable with aluminum wiring. Copper these days is way over priced. And so is PVC. Save the hassle and just run the teck cable it’s armoured and ready to go. You may need to sleeve it coming out of the ground just for mechanical protection from weed wackers and cars. But one stick of pvc is cheaper than a whole run. Also would recommend looking at Leviton panel you can add smart breakers Incase you’re away and wanna shut something off.

    Dream shop is coming along great! I'm in Canada, so unsure of building code in Texas. But ideally a conduit run from the main house to the garage would be ideal. You would put a conduit up from the slab, into the spot your shop breaker box. Another thought would be to run a new power line from the poles behind your house. And also, water in the shop would be handy. Keep it up dude!

  • @ReignitedAuto

    Lot of people here calling for 200amp service, which would be great if you've got several people working in your shop at once. In my shop 35x40, I've got my lift, welders, plasma cutter and large air compressor and it's all running off of 100amp service. But for four years I've had no issues because I'm just one person and therefore I'm not running everything at once. I've never once had an issue with breakers tripping even using the welder at max amperage. I feel like the 100amps is plenty. Just my opinion though 👍

    I would have run the electrical from your panel in the house through the attic and out the back wall of the house and down the back wall in conduit and then it should be buried under the ground 18" to 24" and then come up inside the wall in the shop and install a sub panel and the do the rest of the wiring in the shop from there. I think you will probably need an electrical permit and get it inspected when your done. I did my own wiring and sub panel in my shop and it's easy all you have to do is watch some you tube video's and learn what the electrical code is in your area. Good Luck!

    Have Oncor or TNMP up size your house meter to 400A. 200A for the house and 200A to the shop.

    You can bore under the driveway with a rented device. This would place your conduit where your electrician can use it, they might even have such a boring device. Then you could mini excavate a ditch for the conduit. It looks like all the services are underground, is there a transformer near you property? Could run a new line to the shop for max power? Good place to use the electrician knowledge and creative ideas.

    It might be cheaper to add a new electric service to your garage. Then going from your house. Do you have a 200 Amp panel? And how much are you using on panel? Just giving you an opinion? And when you run your underground pipe you could own like 3” or 2” depending on what you do to save money

  • @SHKEKEKE

    Check rr buildings, Kyle just had a core drill run his electric for his shop. I'd look into doing a separate 200amp service for the shop. Future proof it for ac, future pool, or resale. You can also run conduit for Internet and water to use now or future.

    Directional drilling will be pricey, but so will repaving... good luck on that. As far as internally, figure out where you want your outlets and what you're planning to use them for, consult with a licensed electrician, run your wires and boxes yourself (even your receptacles) based on their input.... get it done and have them come do the final terminations and sign-off... FWIW

    Not sure if you can, but ask for your garage to be on it own service, In SC where I live, this is an easy option to do. Then you are pulling wires from the street.

    Pull new service from the street straight to the shop. Likely comparable in cost with far superior result.

    If you have Oncor or CoServ request a second meter for that building. They will come and install it typically for free. You just pay your $25/month meter fee.

  • @scottbyrd2157

    Ok two things!! Your power for shop? I would consider to have your power company drop a new line separately into your backyard and have a separate meter. As to run it from the pole they drop in vs running from your house. That is unless you can according to your HOA or building codes.
    Second, I’d make a bench for those seats and add them to the garage as an accent and seating. 😂😂

    It would be more expensive, but I would run separate service. That way if you run things like lifts, compressors, etc, your homes power will not be affected.

    • @elginmercado5082
      @elginmercado5082 3 місяці тому

      I won't be affected if runs at a minimum of 100 amp service fed of the house. I have air compressor, lift, plasma cutter, and host other electrical tools and when we are in the shop using all these tools my home power has never been affected. Also, what are the odds he's going to be using all the equipment at the same time! Slim to none.

    Why would you run the wire on the outside of the garage? Up over the current garage, down inside the wall, and out! Now you don’t have ugly conduit on the outside

    • @Youngguns42303
      @Youngguns42303 4 місяці тому

      I'm fairly sure the HOA will not allow overhead wiring. If this guy has a problem with seeing conduit he sure wouldn't want to see the overhead wires every time he pulls into the driveway or walks outside

    • @fuoman100
      @fuoman100 4 місяці тому +1

      @Youngguns42303 no one mentioned arial wire. His description is pretty easy to follow. Run from panel up inside garage, accross attic then down inside wall and out the back a Foot above the ground to a conduit or aquatight cable run to the new shop. Depending on local codes aquatight might be cheaper running 10/3 rather than through conduit.

    • @BrodyMorgan0805
      @BrodyMorgan0805 4 місяці тому

      Can also run down the wall that way the conduit is a foot off the ground with an lb and easier to cover

    To fasten that short base plate, you would be much better off with a hammer drill and Tapcon screws rather than using a stud gun, which is likely to crack the concrete and loosen the anchor bolt. 3/8 chuck hammer drills are inexpensive at Harbor Freight.

    Your electrician should be able to point you in the right direction and help you make a decision on what’s best for your situation. I would say your best options would be either to upgrade your house service to a 400A and feed a 200A from there to your shop, or just build a service on your shop and meter your shop completely separate from your house.

    Oh no... He didn't run conduit for the electrical runs inside the shop??
    A big help will be your local electrical utility company, see what it would cost to either take a new run in from the street (not sure what your house is rated for but it might be too big of a draw if you combine your house AND garage), OR if they're willing to branch off of your home's supply.
    My thought is giving the garage its own supply will function better, be less volatile, and also may end up being cheaper in the long run.
