Fishing on Southend pier (Thames estuary) in the 1960s I saw someone catch a shad. It was a rare sight even then; I only ever saw that one fish caught.
@@Chasingscalesspecieshunt the Severn can be pretty intimidating since it's just so big, but it holds some absolutely beautiful fish. I hadn't fished that particular stretch for about 20 years but decided to give it a go again this year, almost for nostalgias sake. Ive really enjoyed it and will probably keep an active membership on it in the future.
I saw a very sizeable 1 caught on the end of West Arm, Newhaven, (Ouse Estuary) about 40 Years ago, netted it for the Angler. I also know a Bloke who caught a small 1 at Eastbourne about 4 Years ago.
Fascinating- I remember as a kid they featured in my 'Boys book of British Fish' or similar- never seen one and now probably never will. I wonder how they are getting on in their other habitats-further South ?
Might sound unbelievable, but ive saw and caught a Twait Shad up wales on the BAA Aberechan and Penarth stretch, give it a look if you want!❤ Also, love you're videos
Used to catch plenty of shad and dace on our local river through May/June. Not a sniff of either anymore although plenty of roach further on in the season. The Salmon and Sea trout are non existent, only had one grayling in 3 years.
They were either for damming rivers in order to make it deeper upstream for boat traffic. Some were used in the past to make a fall of water to power water powered industry. A lot of existing weirs in UK have been used to make hydroelectric electricity. Some of the old victorian era weirs had fish passes built in but overall they are bad for migratory fish like salmon. On many rivers weirs caused the extinction of salmon.

@@user-ro4mx2uh2m they do turn up in some strange places
Plenty in the River Wye near Monmouth. Huge shoals in May June.
They take salmon lures readily
Used to get the occasional Allis Shad on light lures and feathers off Bournemouth pier.
@@philipkay8116 they do turn up heard a few people say that
I have caught two there a while ago too. I assume there must be a tiny spawning population in the Avon or Stour nearby
Great video, excellent photography (as always) and very much appreciated! Thanks, Jack!
cheers kevin
I know this town and stretch of water really well it's a great spot. A fantastic insight in to the river and the fish in to it. keep up the good work.
@@LG_Fishing I’ve never fished it but some nice swims around there

Great
Great video. So how many shad are tagged when monitoring? Is it 50 in total? I'm curious as to how rare fish populations are estimated!
this year it was 50 but it varies from year to year
Should market them as a UK Tarpon.
they do look like them don't they
Can you explain weirs? I moved to Sweden and had never seen them and I absolutely hate them. What’s their purpose ?
