- "Friday Night in San Francisco", Was a very significant, musical and historical event that took place back on 5 December 1980 at the famous Warfield Theatre, in San Francisco, CA.
For the first time in history, "Flamenco Meet Jazz", in a unique live performance by Al Di Meola, Paco De Lucia and John McLaughlin. After almost 32 years, Al Di Meola and Paco De Lucia, meet again at the other side of the world in Germany just to play together "Mediterranean Sundance" one the number one hit songs of that remarkable night.
Watch and listen to carefully this tune, then you will realize why after so long this album still remains as one the most sold live performance record of our time.
Two brilliant musicians having an intimate, lively discussion through their guitars. I love the way they engaged each other throughout the entire piece.
RIP, Paco de Lucía.
B
I have played guitar for 25 years.. if i had 100 years left to train, i still could not play like Paco with my fingers.. unbelievable skill, and not to show of but always for the song.
shoking blue
he was pretty sloppy tbh
This is just an opinion, but I've learned to ignore the idea that this kind of playing is "sloppy". When I was only concerned with duplicating the exact notes on the score in front of me, I wasn't "sloppy" unless that is what you call a metronome.
Now, music is much more than 13 notes to play. Besides the context of the progression and/or pattern being played at a tempo regular enough that others can follow, yet irregular enough that it can create an implied rhythm (a.k.a. syncopation) that blends in with other players attempts. Country and rock are very good at this.
Not only do I enjoy this kind of music much better, I find it works well in cases where memorizing exact notes in exact timing is difficult or out-right impossible. Besides, the "perfect" playing is so mechanical it is hard to enjoy. If a misplaced finger can be blended into the progression of the song it is more of an accent and less of a mistake.
People who have to make their mistakes obvious end-up killing the song along with the spirit behind it. Those kinds of platonic ideals are no more than an ancient version of pop music. But, some people are either afraid, or not capable of putting human feelings into their music.
Keep working hard. If you get close you'll be close to a god of the guitar.
Regards.
John tbh you don't know what you are talking about. Go play a massive improvisation like this with no background timekeeping music apart from your own foot, using all shorts of syncopated rhythms, jazz voicings, unbelievable scale patterns and feel and then try to judge....Sloppy...lol! Everything, literally EVERYTHING he plays on this one is intended and attributes to the atmosphere, even the notes that are on the background somehow during a solo. You have no idea what level of guitar competence you are witnessing here. I have been playing flamenco for 25 years, electric for 20 years and I am pretty bloody good, what we are seeing here is out of this world....
Al Di Meola is amazing, Paco is out of this world, gold fingers, R.I.P. Paco El maestro, The best
After listening to these musicians playing 'their' music, it's as if the finest gift has been bestowed upon us to be alive during these performances. They can read each other's mind whilst playing.
God bless Spain. God bless America.
Paco is so very interested and joyful, it's like his soul is locked in right through Al's eyes. Great eye contact makes it so much more amazing to hear and see what they feel. Duende.
Beautiful music. Not a word spoken, yet there was so much said! Hard to not have your foot tapping the whole time.
I like how they don't need to focus on their fretboard and can just look at each other to build a dialog... Fabulous musicans !!
They're playing a game, challenging each other....a Jam for sure.
It’s hard to play in sync like this, there’s no percussion or drums to reference so that they’re on the same rhythm. So they need to be looking at each other constantly or else they’ll go out of sync
@@neptunemike They are marking the tempo with their feets, it´s not 100% about looking each other just to keep in sync
@@neptunemike They are experimented musicians, they don´t really need to look each other that often
I play better not looking
You can clearly see how much respect al feels about Paco, just look at his eyes, he was glowing
I can watch it again and again forever.
yep.
hossein assar me tooo...
...ooh... so i am not the only one i do that... ;)
Me too as a drummer 😃
When Paco passed, the world lost the greatest living guitarist, bar none. This is him, passing the torch to a Jersey guy. Now the best living. 🎸
I think my computer just exploded because of the amount of talent in the video
I heard them play together in 1981 on LP and am so glad to see a reunion session like this in 2022. But, the person I wanted to tell you about this performance has passed away.
Cuanta verdad hay en tus palabras 👍
I cry like a little baby
I love how much eye contact there is here. And the shot at 5:04 of Paco through Al's glasses is genius!
I Wish You were Here 😢, “Maestro 💃🎸 Paco” 💒 God Bless You. Long Goodbye... (Excuse me, My Japanglish 😓) from Tokyo Japan.
To watch is to witness something like a good father son relationship.
This is NOT a 'Battle' between guitarists... This is an alliance of 'Father and Son ', and two of the greatest guitar players that have ever lived...
Paco had such a ferocious rest-stroke. Fasted than Al could even pick. What a talent, what a loss. I'll miss you my friend.
I swear that’s like a freak genetic thing. How the fuck can he picado that fast. I’m a pretty good player and I can’t get even close to that speed. Like not even close. Especially as when most people play fast like that, you lose the attack of the notes. Pacos picks seem louder and more aggressive the faster he goes.
It’s ridiculous. I suppose a million hours practice makes you the best!!
@@nick260682 the combination of wanting to be that good, and having to be that good so you can make a living.. I believe is the combination of life's hardships an love for the guitar that forged Paco into an immortal myth.
A close friend?
@@nick260682 he said in an interview: "Without a guitar between my arms i´m like a piece of forniture, i cannot even express myself correctly. All i do is playing the guitar".
Me too my friend, those arpegios were the best ever!!!
Incredible and amazing ..paco is immortal by his music
Andalucia, what a fertile land of heavenly musicians.
Viste tocar a Paco jazz?
you can see them wipe their eyes at the end of the song. They knew it was their last performance together. RIP Paco.
eyes and face. The intensity was too much for their pours haha
Wow! It's almost a year after he passed. I consider him to be one of the best players to have ever walked this Earth!
Thanks for the post.
the best aspect of this performance is the interaction between these two great guitarists. It looks like joy.
Two words ... guitar virtuosity.... this , boys & girls is what real guitars sound like .
p. s. rest in peace Paco , your music will live forever.
I'm 58, I picked up the guitar at 12
Oops
Their changes and rhythm are seamless
Incredible
The Saturday night in san Fran is the best guitar concert ever recorded
Pure love
Paco de lucia is the best guitar player that this universe has given us and there would never be someone like him. Paco infinite, forever, we miss you maestro.
Tough to think that these two guitars will never speak to each other again but thank God for these recordings! RIP Paco De Lucia
get tears in my eyes, when i see and hear this - bye Paco
So Beautiful, RIP Paco.. You were magnificent. Watching this makes me well up.
GRACIAS MAESTROS. ESTO ES COMO DECIMOS EN ESPAÑA, LA HOSTIA.
Paco plays an old man here. Wisdom and humanity is in his eyes and in his notes.
At 7:15 Al De miola just wanted stop and watch and admire the fantastic play of Paco,
I was playing this myself note-for-note early this morning.
But then my alarm clock went off, and I had to wake up.
RIP Paco.
PACO DE LUCIA, SPAIN FOREVER..IN MEMORIAM..
the great flamenco's feeling....fantastic musicians in this fragile world ladies and gentlemen!!!!!
So nice to sit here on a stormy evening wind howling warm today then cold listening to these two miestros battle it out but end in a truce. These moments are ones I will remember. Thank you.
You can see the sweat, they pour their hearts and souls into playing so fluently and so well.
PICADO VS PICK.......2 of the fastest in the world.....I saw them 20 yrs ago at Fullerton college and they still have it Bravo Bravo Bravo
The fastest 9 minutes in music! Amazing Talents... Bravo!

Good lord....yea speechless! lol wow
I saw Paco play in Miami years ago. It was actually life changing to see his gift. When ever someone says this person or that is a great player I always say "Have you listened to Paco?"
And most will go......"who?"Makes you wanna strangle them.
I see two maestros...I see two best friends, this is everlasting!
So love this...at 56...blessed to hear there talent together! Wow...😢😍😢😍😢😍😢😍😢
I love watching these two play together. There so much chemistry and passion it honestly brings me to tears.
Wait what??? Paco does these runs with fingers??? No pick?? Big time respect here!
while they were playing it was like they just knew and at around 4:32 i just saw Paco saying to Al this is the last time, and it just felt like a final sort of lesson from Paco to Al culminating with 7:13 and the best picado i have ever witnessed his last gift to him RIP the best to ever do it Paco de Lucia
very, very true! I totally noticed that too, good call.
Magic
Two Brilliant guitarists! Paco De Lucia shall live forever through his music. Thanks for sharing!
I listened to that concert at Athens (August 1981) at Licavitous Theater! What a night! Full moon. Picturesque Athens, Piraeus, and Mediterranean Sundance. And three Masters! Unforgettable!
One of the best musical conversations I have ever heard!
Grande paco
5:55 - not sure if somebody dropped a glass or something, but it blends so well with the music
good ear! makes for a perfect single accent
+MrEirey Sounded like a wine bottle kicked over at about 5:54 but didn't phase either of them a bit. That can be a real problem with sloped or tiered seating where the bottle just keeps traveling until it reaches the stage.
John Healey
yeah it sounds like the same thing happened at 2:40
MrEire
Olá.
Estou ouvindo do Brasil, Rio Grande do Sul, Cornélios.
I never got tired of this song...
IMMENSI ARTISTI PACO E AL !!!!!!
I think I love this performance more than the original in 1980 (and THAT one is absolutely next level out of this world). Such passion, emotion, depth, complete mastery of the craft on both parts, just brilliant!
I'd be interested to hear why you like this version better.
The one with Larry Coryell from Meeting of the Spirits is better.
These guys are like the guitar wizards !! Legendary musicians !!!
The best friends of music together!Merci la vie.The Masters of Masters!
Chissà quante bellissime musiche ci avrebbe fatto ascoltare ancora !!!!!! R.I.P. PACO DE LUCIA , MITO DELLA CHITARRA !!!!!!
brilliant and ingenious interplay of both great artists
Brilliant!
Only Paco di Lucia to make the great Al di Meola break out in a cold sweat
sometimes it's like they are speaking to eachother through their music.
yep
Mike kpacks They are..........
indeed. they are communicating
@mike kpacks
Not like. They are. Music transcends verbal language barriers. All the proof anyone needs is all right here. R.I.P. Paco.
mike kpacks, sometimes? The best music comes from groups where there is dialogue. Not a criticism just an observation from someone who worked with musicians a lot when I was younger. Recording, stagehand...photographer, anything to be near the source of my audio joy
OMG, that was fantastic! The dynamics between these two amazing artists! And how they communicated, with
Al understanding that Paco was there only for the best experience to be created! One of the best things I've witnessed!
Absolutne mistrzostwo!
The counter melodies they play are amazing , the chords , the feel and the time really make it , too
Sadly I say RIP maestro! Great man nice guy, God like Maestro...Just can't stop missing you!..
The way they look at each other while soloing is amazing. They are talking with melodies!
Two of the greatest show how to play fast with a lot of felling and musicianship, I miss Paco, a lot. John & Al surely do.
poesia.....
You are the best guitarists thank you for this Performance Beautiful 💯💯⭐⭐⭐❤️❤️❤️
Meola mola..
Difficult to believe Elegant Gypsy is 43 years old. I'm getting old. Saw these two at the Royal Albert Hall in 1981 with John McLaughlin. Saw Al again at the Hammersmith Odeon and even shook the man's hand. Legend.
I was fortunate to have witnessed Paco on two occasions.. He was then and always a legend
Excepcional, Paco,
