Petroglyphs vs. Pictographs | Educational Videos with Dr. Mark Sublette

In this video, we will explore the fascinating world of Native American rock art. You'll learn the difference between a pictograph and a petroglyph as I focus on a variety of rock art locations throughout the American Southwest. I go over the differences between the "Barrier Canyon" style pictograph found in the Canyonlands of Utah, as well as the various Puebloan rock art styles as well, even highlighting 'desert varnish' (the natural canvas these stories were told on). We visit Birthing Rock near Moab and discuss the various iconography found ranging from humanoid figures to spirals, to various fauna, and even the imagery used to tell the time and measure the seasons.
