    And you’re super right, the “Why Tulane” essay was definitely not optional since they want to admit people who actually love the school. I also did the optional Tulane alum interview where we met at a Starbucks and talked about my high school career and interests which REALLY REALLY helped; plus he answered so many of my questions. I would suggest doing that if possible

    Some updated information for prospective Tulane students: The Bruff is actually being turned into residence halls soon, but they opened the Commons this year with a pretty good variety of food. You can also go to Loyola (right across the street from Tulane) to go to the Orleans Room dining hall and use wavebucks at their food places too!

    I'm trying to make a list of colleges to apply to for next year, but the racism kind of scares me...how bad/widespread would you say it is?

    • @CherissaLindsay
      @CherissaLindsay  5 років тому +9

      Hi there! There's going to be racism at every school you apply to or end up going to. It seems to be an issue at Tulane based on Tulane's history and how they choose not to desegregate until they were going to lose their biggest donor. If you find your group, you shouldn't experience racism within your group unless they are fake friends. I don't think the racism part should scare you because it can happen anywhere. I wouldn't necessarily say it's bad if you avoid it or certain situations. For example, you might be the first student of color that someone encounters so they might say the wrong thing unintentionally but, you could be that person to teach them why they shouldn't say that and change that person's viewpoint.

      I don't think I have a copy of my "Why Tulane" essay but I remember including growing up in a diverse community with different cultures. I shared about attending Bar and Bat Mitzvahs growing up and even wanting take to part in Jewish Holiday celebrations. I also include my interest in history, with new orleans having a rich history and culture, I knew Tulane was the right fit. Finally I included my passion for community service and helping others. I wanted to be at a school where community service was essential and part of the community. I hope this helps!

    There are so many new places to eat! The LBC (open til 2am), The Commons, Le Gourmet, PJ's, the drawing board, etc. And personally I haven't been here long enough to experience any racism but it is a heavily Liberal campus and everyone I have met white, brown, or black, have been really open and nice. And if you are worried about diversity there are so many opportunities to meet POC around campus. There are Equity Thursdays, Melanin Mondays, Wednesdays with an "O" (office of multicultural affairs), and other events always happening! I haven't been here long but I have been able to connect with a lot of people who look like me. And if you don't want to party you don't have to. I've met tons of chill people like me through orientation.

    • @CherissaLindsay
      @CherissaLindsay  5 років тому +4

      Yazmine Parker maybe I didn’t explain myself, there aren’t many dining options for people like myself who have food allergies or intolerances. If you can’t eat gluten, dairy or have acid reflex or ibs or other GI issues it will be hard to find options. I’m glad you haven’t experienced racism on campus, maybe some people in your class actually took the racism and diversity portion of orientation seriously. In my class, half of the students walked out during that talk. There is diversity but they’re using the athletes to their advantage. Almost all of the athletes are POC. Which they have separate housing, a separate dining hall and are on completely different schedules. You’ll probably never meet some of the basketball or football players. Just wait until you get more into the year, there has been many complaints about staff and faculty treat students of color unfairly. Oh yeah, congrats on tulane! roll wave🌊💚

    I’m a junior looking to apply to Tulane and it’s literally my dream school! I’m applying this fall and I was wondering if applying for a merit scholarship would in any way affect my chances of being admitted. My parents will only send me there if it is at a reasonable price. Also, I know this year is a bit weird because of COVID-19 but since Tulane has gone test optional this year, would sending my 32 ACT score lower or increase my chances of getting in? Im still looking into Tulane and doing as much research as possible into their admission process but I’d love to hear what you as a Tulane student think!

    • @CherissaLindsay
      @CherissaLindsay  4 роки тому +2

      Hi! That's so exciting!! When you apply to Tulane, everyone is eligible for merit scholarships. If you get accepted, that would be in your acceptance letter. You should start applying for outside scholarships since Tulane doesn't meet families' financial needs. The other Tulane scholarships you apply for once you're accepted. You have a strong ACT score so I would still send that in! Since they are tested optional, I think if you submit your score it will make you stand out. Let me know if you have any more questions!

      spicy tater hi there! i understand that Tulane is pricey but there’s scholarships and loans and other ways to pay if that’s an issue! When it comes to racism, racism will happen at any school you attend. What makes a difference is how the school handles it. I hope the best for you❤️

    What do admission counselors think about when people write about their service trips? is that a repetitive subject that everyone does?

    • @CherissaLindsay
      @CherissaLindsay  5 років тому +2

      I think it's a very common thing that people write about, especially those applying to Tulane. Since Tulane is a school that values community service, I believe a lot of people write about their experiences with participating in service or giving back to the community. I can't speak from an admissions standpoint, but my "Why Tulane" and personal essay had nothing to do with community service, and that's the same for most of my friends as well. You want to make your application stand out.
      I hope this helps :)

    I’m from Kentucky and I am determined to go to college in New Orleans. In the fall, I am going into my senior year of high school and I’m considering both Loyola New Orleans and Tulane. How would you say Loyola compares to Tulane - from what you can see?

    • @CherissaLindsay
      @CherissaLindsay  4 роки тому

      Hi! I love that you want to come to New Orleans for college. Honestly I don't know that many people from Loyola, but I do get a different vibe when I step onto their campus. I personally think the students at Loyola are more laid back and less competitive than Tulane students. I just don't really see Loyola and Tulane students mingling. You're able to eat at each other's dining halls and food courts. I do think Loyola's campus is slightly nicer upfront like where the academic buildings are, not where the residence halls are. I've been in a couple of residence hall, I think they're standard, it's a dorm room. The campus is also smaller, since their school in smaller. I hope that helps!

    Thank you for this video! Upcoming senior and I'm trying to decide where to apply. I do have a question tho if you don't mind answering tho... Most schools are like mostly white, I know, and you discussed racism in this video so I'm wondering if there's a Latino student population and if they're comfortable there? Like how do you view that as a student there? I don't want to rely on just statistics.

    • @CherissaLindsay
      @CherissaLindsay  4 роки тому

      I don't personally know that many Latino students, students at tulane sort of stick to what they know (black students stick with black students, whites with whites, etc). There are student organizations dedicated to Latino students. The students I do know are white passing so they have an easier time. The Latino population is small, around the same size as the Black student population. I hope this helps.
