    I was 21 years old when i hear James Bowman for the first time. He became my favourite counter tenor.
    What a huge loss 😢 the voice has left the earth. R.I.P James Bowman

      Yes, at the few concerts I was lucky to see him perform , James B always looked very happy to be there and singing. And he sang to the audience. Some singers, 'beautiful' as their voices may be - don't 'observe' the audience. As though they're singing for themselves & the audience just happens to be in the same space.

    A wise and beautiful performance. No rush, no crazy tempos, no harmonicless voice, no strings playing with dead timbre and purposely no vibrato. Compare this rendition to the excrements produced in the last 20 years in the name of a doubtfully evidenced "historical accuracy".

      so true. fact is, that after an opera became popular (and in time, any song from anywhere apparently) back during the period (and probably later on as well) people tried to embellish their 'interpretations' for various reasons, such as to impress others. it requires a profound ability to sing these songs along with a highly cultivated audience. a lifetime of training with a natural gift too! music is far more than mere entertainment! this man is historically one of the very best in the entire world and his talent beyond measure. together w/ the excellent musicians we have heaven on earth. serious beauty in purest glory so Divine.

      Yes. Sadly 'authentic' performances have often been brought down by mediocre or worse ,instrumentalists. There's no excuse for sloppy technique, lack of cohesion& sluggish tempo. Luckily here the singers get the musicians they deserve. The consummate artistry of 'these' composers would always have demanded the highest possible standards of musicianship & technique.in their instrumentalists. Indeed, the greatest e.g. Bach & Vivaldi to name 2 obvious - re-imagined what was possible for instruments to produce & consistently expressed far more through the voice than I hear in 'modern' composers' work. (OK I haven't heard everything - but...)

    He reminds me of the late great Alfred Deller! Wonderful restraint and sensitivity. And what a timbre to his voice.

    I have always wondered iif countertenors have testicles or are they castrated

    • @smihca
      @smihca 3 роки тому +9

      Every time men laugh in falsetto, their testicles are shrinking a 1% : so you have to take care as a man not to laugh too much. This is why men are very serious beings, as I am. Try to laugh as a Santa Claus does!

    • @auburnsynge-perrin6075
      @auburnsynge-perrin6075 4 місяці тому +2

      Are you having a laugh? Countertenors are also capable of singing in the usual male range - but far more likely baritone or bass than tenor. The countertenor, uses the 'edge' or a small part of the 'vocal strings'. On a stringed bowed instrument, if you touch a string half way along with a finger of your left hand, when you bow - you get an octave higher than the 'open string. creating a weird unearthly & delicate sound which can't be achieved otherwise.
      If you're castrated young enough to 'save' your treble voice (it does not always work) the limbs have no cue to slow & stop growing as normally happens at puberty, so castrati were very tall with long gangly arms & legs. Because the chest & lungs continues to grow & the voice box to some extent, the sound of the castrati was very different from that of the counter tenor -who has all the characteristics of the 'normal' male - the ability to father children, satisfy a lady, (or anyone else), play rugger for England. Forget to put the loo seat down afterwards...
      Alfred Deller's son Mark became a counter tenor, as did Michael Chance's son Alexander.
      There are much better explanations of the Countertenor voice o line than this Sadly they can't help make you one if you haven't the physiological potential.
