FromSoftware follows up their ghostly horror adventure with Echo Night 2. Released just a year after the first game, Echo Night 2 expands on the gameplay and design of the original. Unfortunately it was never released in English. Luckily, there's a fantastic fan translation available, so those who don't understand Japanese can enjoy this gem. Or, you know, you could just watch my video.

Hi, I'm the translator. The reason why the title wasn't translated literally was not me being "creative" or anything. It was because of a secret item in the game, the record with the in-game soundtrack, which had "Lord of Nightmare" (sic) written on it in English in the Japanese version. Actually, there was quite a bit of other dummied English text as well. But clearly, the developers had the phrase "Lord of Nightmares" in mind.
Originally, I was planning to translate it as "The Master of Slumber" until I saw "Lord of Nightmare" in the game, and I wanted to be closer to the developers' intent. So I hope people don't get the wrong idea. I wasn't trying to "improve" upon the title.
That’s awesome to know. I’m going to pin this comment. Also, I didn’t mean to imply that you were trying to improve the title. Sorry if I made it seem that way. And thank you for your hard work! It really is a fantastic translation.
@@dungeonchill In general, a healthy benefit of doubt should be afforded in most cases; I hadn't figured you meant it that way in the slightest :)
Also, this factoid really helps, so thank you both.
Even outside of the Souls legacy, From games clearly benefit from dedicated lore seekers.
The graphical style of these old PSX era games is so nice. I am glad we're seeing indie games being made in this style now.
Yet that is why people are obsessed with Crow County now it seems...
The problem is that I don't think these games look... great without the natural blending/anti-aliasing/etc that you got from a CRT. These games were designed with a CRT screen in mind. 3D/2D games suffer the most, because the CRT made everything look of a piece, instead of the backgrounds looking jarring. CRT filters have gotten kind of incredible, especially CRT Royale. I recently played through FF9 on retroarch with it and it looked great.

@@keip4568 it's also a good game
Nah, what indies are doing is low effort slop
I live in Australia and somehow I always stay up late enough on a Saturday night to see your videos release so quickly, worth it! I love them
same here!
Bloody cold at the moment, ain't it fellas.
Reporting in haha. Can confirm it is indeed cold.
100% love the little added bits of personality like the "noisies" and the hype yelling about the door raft. You've got a great balance going with those and your eloquent, well-written review and summary. Idk what to say besides "keep it up" and pls don't make us wait a year for Echo Night: Beyond! Though I guess it's kinda tradition at this point.
It's very reminiscent of Grimbeard. If you don't watch them, you should.
Yea it really is great, I like the part at 20:30 😂😂
I think part of the reason the first game's setting works so well is also because you're on an ocean liner; if Richard wants off, good luck getting to land or finding help. Ocean horror is a great setting and not done as often as spoopy mansions, which are always good, but I agree with you. The setting of the last game was better.
Bless fanslations and the dedicated people behind them, especially when they go for making it seem like an entry in the series rather than a direct translation. Loved hearing about this one!
It seems almost like this game is a soft reboot of the series, with Richard
🤔 But I'd have to see with 3; if we have a new protag, if it's a continuation, etc. Regardless, you did an amazing job!
I'm wracking my brain for summer streets in Yokohama, but coming up with nothing for now. Excited to see what's next!
I enjoy your voice, I like your video style and I love the long form content you post. I will be a lifelong lurker/ subscriber to your channel. I get excited each time you upload and get myself nice and comfy for “story time”.
Yeah, me too. I was watching an earlier video today and he was questioning the viewers on how they liked the 'longer form content'. Really glad he stuck with this formula! Really captivating videos to watch.
The way he says “compass”… “com…pass?”
Bro I know I was looking if anyone else thought about that 😂
I mean, it /is/ spelled with an O.
Seriously it was driving me a little crazy. I’ve never heard anyone say it like that before (and if I have it was never this many times).
@@chancekahle2214 So are words like *Complete* and *Computer.*
He is just a normal human being like you and me. He isn't an alien robot, that would be silly.
Dungeon Chill is gonna play through so many From Soft games he'll be forced to play Armored Core
Not that! Anything but that!!
(psst…. I love Armored Core)
@@dungeonchillWhich one is your favorite?
@@hayaokakizaki4463 Master of Arena and For Answer. The first game is nostalgic for me though, because it was on a demo disc I got with my PS1.
If the ship in the first game was called "The Orpheus", maybe Echo Night 2 should be called: Echo Night - Hypnos
dude i was just reading about hypnos for a project i'm doing lol
The airship was called the Eurydice!
Its called the Eurydice, Orpheus' lover
They went back to Armored Core, hopefully, just hopefully Miyazaki and the big wigs at FromSoft realize that their older experimental non-Souls games still have potential.
I don't really think they do. Others have done their shtick better. They should stick to what they know
They haven't shut down the possibility of a new kingsfield. Miyazaki only said it would have to be directed by Naotoshi Zin since its his series.
@@ad-ui6ey L take. Stay out of the kitchen if you cant cook
Played for the first the Armored core 5 recently and it aged so badly, especially compared to their soulslike.
Fromsoft did make an attempt to experiment with their old mystery format in their VR game "Deracine". It didnt do that well because VR wasn't widely available in 2018 when it released, and it was a Sony exclusive. But its a phenomenally crafted story with some really interesting twists worthy of Fromsoft's legacy.
New dungeon chill video just dropped? I know what I'm doing for the next 50 minutes
Glad to have some FromSoftware goodness to tie me over until the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC.
I'm also glad you covered this, the first Echo Nights and Kuon. I've played Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Sekiro, and of course Elden Ring and I knew of King's Field and Armored Core before I played 6. But I'm not as familiar with their other games, so it's cool to see these games of a studio I like but are obscure to me being covered.
Keep up the good work, Dungeon!
I'm hoping he'll cover Lost Kingdoms. They were GameCube games I still have and it blew my mind open they were FromSoft games.
Watching this in between helping people with Shadow of the Erdtree bosses.
i believe the mummy is supposed to be one of the ancient people albert spoke of, the ones who built the tower. her sarcophagus even has the ancient script on it
Great video as usual! You've got a calming cadence and fun humor
When the zeppelin was mentioned, I couldn't help but be reminded of the Hindenburg, of which Max Miller of Tasting History fame did an episode on. Remarkably, one of the stories he told was about a family that got separated while trying to flee the airship, which also reminds me of the story here in this game.
Stalactites, stalagmites, c for ceiling, g for ground
Also: "Stalac*tites* hold tight to the celing; stalag*mites* might grow up."
Huh. As stupid as this sounds, I only ever knew half of that mnemonic for some reason, so it was “Stalactites have a C for ceiling, and stalagmites… are the other one”
@@katehucks774 I mean, you got the info regardless haha
God, I wish I hadn't spent the last 17 years on UA-cam subscribed to channels like these. Your videos are so good and I would love it if I didn't already know the plot from other really obscure channels, haha. I still love watching your renditions but it would have been amazing to go along this journey with you. Darn my need to learn everything about obscure horror games!
Look up grim beard. This whole channel is a rip off of his.
@@Daftanemone And your opinion is a ripoff of piss flavored dog-shit
@@Daftanemone Kind of a reach to say "rip off."
Oh hell yeah! I stumbled onto this channel a few days back and I've been binging the videos, and I JUST watched the first Echo Night video--and the sequel video didn't disappoint. Thank you for the excellent work you do!
A little girl orphaned from time on an airship and a girl in a haunted mansion inseparable from her faithful pet dog? Fascinating! Someone should expand on those ideas.
Great work with the video! Love your formats and your deep dives!
I always look forward to these videos. I sometimes find myself pausing a video to go off and play the game until I get stuck on something and just give up and finish the video
I remember that there's a third Echo Night for PS2.
I thing it's Echo Night Beyond, or something....
Dunno if there's something to do with this PS1 series, thought.
There is, and it's in space.
I loved it.
Incredible timing. I needed a new dungeon chill video!
Nice video dungeon guy!
Noisies :)))
What a sweetheart.
Excellent video as always, Dungeon Chill!
so glad you came up in my recommended have been binging your videos.

Spriggan Lunar Verse sounds like something you would yell when you stub your toe.
echo night 1 will always be in my heart. something charming about that game. the voice over is top notch with its quirkyness, make the game eerie
As always,nice vid
I'm gonna have to catch this after work. Great content DC
Interesting the blimp is called Eurydice when the first game's ship was Orpheus.
Awesome video! Thank you.
You're quickly becoming one of my favorite channels to watch.
Another Great Video!

Absolutely fantastic, as always

Ayyeee the big man at it again!
Im so happy im early rn you are my favorite youtuber as of now keep up the good content 😭
Ahhh, a glorious Dungeon Chill video with a FromSoft horror game. What a great Saturday!
Always a good time when I can watch a Dungeon Chill video. And always look forward to what the next video will be about. I wish Fromsoftware would go back to trying a horror genre again like Kuon or Echo Night.
Fromsoft sure knows how to gift us with all the feels anyone could ever ask for
Good video!
I have such a game backlog, I'm trying to not add something new several times per day. To this end, I decided to watch the entire video and I'm very glad you went through all the endings. I do hope someone plays after seeing this. Thanks 👻
Thank you😊
Funny that Fromsoftware went from making first person dungeon crawler RPG games to making first person puzzle solving ghost stories. Now they've become a well known hardcore action RPG games. This company has evolved so much over the years.
Woo. New video!
Ah. A chill video to chill with.
Also horror stuff.noice
Love to watch as I’m about to sleep how convenient this dropped
I just realized I had a conversation with you on Twitter like a month or two ago where you popped up to plug your channel and I thought to myself, “I ain’t clicking that, sorry”…but then I realized I was already subbed and watched your videos
I love the story of the red haired woman that you can only see the end of you get all the sphere
Also i found the story of the boy that ask you an Acorn and rember home so tragic
New dungeon chill, awesome!
Ahhh yeeehhh Dungeon Chill posted? It's gonna be a good day.
51 seconds ago! Time to chill in the dungeon after a long day’s work.
I managed to snag a copy of this a few months back. Definitely the most interesting of the PS1 lineup for FromSoftware
I love how you worked the PS1 limitations into the narrative 😂
Oh geez
Twin redhead sisters, scarlet something incurable disease, destined death...
Reminds me of something current
Looking forward to your Echo Night 3 video a year from now.
Now we just have to wait another year for echo night 3 video
good video
I had the exact same issue with the boat shed kid. I knew something was there, but didn't figure it out by the end.
LMAO you were like 'naturally they all did a great job', and my headphones made a horrific whirring noise in my ears and turned off as they start speaking 😭😭😭 THEYRE HAUNTING ME HELP HELP
The ghost quests reminds me of Majora's Mask
NEW DUNGEON CHILL HUZZAHHH
MORE PEAK DUNGEON CHILL HELL YEAHHHHHH
OMG it's racing lagoon I'm sure.
Very good.
Dude I came here for YOUR PLOT SUMMARY!
stalactite, holds on TIGHT. A stalagmite reaches with all its MIGHT. you got it👍
great video 👍
This was very good 👍 👏 👌
I'm a super novice when it comes to game dev, but i thought it would be fun to make a ps1 style game. Something in the vein of resident evil 7 (fps survial horror). Just all pixeled so it gives me the warm and fuzzies. This game gives off that vibe minus the gunplay ect. Great vid Dungeon Chiller.
Stalactites are tight on the ceiling, and stalagmites might grow up to the ceiling.
The biggest reward for freeing all souls is an accessory that permanently protects you from hostile spirits. However, by the time you get it, there will be no more ghosts. There is also no New Game Plus. It feels like an afterthought.
Echo Night Beyond video would be amazingggg.
Between the ship Orpheus and the zeppelin Eurydice I think the lesson these games are teaching us is DON’T NAME LARGE VESSELS AFTER TRAGIC GREEK CHARACTERS
Now I wonder if Echonight three will continue this pattern, will there be a spaceship named Oedipus? Or maybe Aristaeus who’s the one who chased Eurydice so she stepped on a serpent?
searchin movies and anime what i watching tonight,, but sudenly youtube notificaton cone in the right time..
DUNGEON CHILL!
To counter your points in the earlier part of this video: There are no good time to drive through the woods to a haunted house/mansion. Case in point: Resident Evil 7. Ethan arrives at noon, and look what happened
5:22 Well clearly he is a vampire or a werewolf, judging by the pointy ears.
8:05 He was always dead, he's a vampire. That's just his meal-time blood that he threw up after she hit his body against the doors too hard.
19:09 Oh good, he found a meal to heal up with. Made a bit of a mess on his way out, but that happens.
19:54 Drunk on blood, no doubt. I assume that's how vampires react to drinking a lot of blood.
23:51 Clearly referencing vampirism.
32:48 It's probably the vampire you met in the woods.
33:01 I changed my mind, that clearly isn't Brian, that's a ghost. Brian is a vampire, they don't have souls.
...oh that's weird, the video ended without resolving the vampire sub-plot. Well that's alright, developers get rushed sometimes.
Whenever someone says that the original voiceover is better than the translated one, i wonder what a native speaker would say.
I always think about this too.
The way I usually think about it is unless they can understand and speak the language, which I'm sure there aren't that many, certainly not to the level that they could notice the tiny intricacies in language, things will be missed. I suppose it's easy when you don't fully understand to think it sounds cooler in Japanese so therefore it's better acted in their heads, despite being clueless if it actually is or not. Of course if something is clearly badly recorded, overly silly voiced or obvious no effort then anyone can comment.
I mean, he does live in Japan
It doesn't even have to be that. You can just tell when the voice and emotion fits the tone and character while a lot of the time, especially during the early days of gaming voice acting you would have actors doing cartoonist voices that just wouldn't fit the tone of the game (for example Deep Fear).
@@coreycahill6836 yes that's something I didn't know, just listened to a q&a. Very cool.
Nice new dc drop before I go to bed
4:13 Hey, Ethan Winters went to the creepy old house while there was still daylight out and he *still* got punched in the face and kidnapped. Horror villains don't give a shit what time it is, they'll still find a way to ruin your day (or night or whenever).
Only played the ps2 one, it's super slow but kinda fascinating. Very thick atmosphere
Noisies got me good lmao
keep up the dynamite work boss man
You can adjust the turning and walking speed, actually. Just open the menu, click system, then option. You seem to have only clicked "special."
Gah, I totally missed that. I thought it was strange that it wasn’t included. Thanks for the heads up.
26:37 Let me guess. You also loved the rafting section of Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine.
19:20 I do prefer your plot summaries though. I will watch this video 15 times before the next is out.
oooooh ! I've just finished that game 2days ago ! crazy timing here.
I really prefered this one over the first one, really good atmosphere better rythm overall and some crazy good graphics for the PSX
