    Great video! Thanks for making it. I'm an international student from Brazil, studying tourism in Portugal. I just started my second year, and I didn't know about the possibility of taking more disciplines to finish it sooner. I will definitely look into this option next semester if it's available here too. I have been feeling a bit disappointed with tourism degree and confused whether it's really worth it or not. Even before the COVID crisis started I felt that it lacks job opportunities other than being a receptionist (which is something I was doing in Brazil at a 5 stars hotel even without a diploma... so I kept asking myself "why spend 3 years studying to end up doing something I was able to do without a degree?!" ☹️). Seeing your video gives me a little bit of hope that, after finishing my degree, I will be able to get a better job other than at the operational departments. Anyway, great video, you just earned a subscriber!

    • @robertalcaniz
      @robertalcaniz  4 роки тому +5

      Hi Breno, Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I do agree with what you say, in the sense that I also was disappointed in general when I started university. But as with everything in life, I think that it is important to try to make the most of it and see the positive side. With tourism, as I said in the video, you have a very broad range of opportunities and can be considered like "Business Administration" but centred towards the tourism sector. Yes, you can become a receptionist or other operational jobs, but you also can go into other fields such as Human Resources, Finance, Marketing or Sales. This is why I think that it is important to take the chance to do internships during the degree in these more complicated departments. Maybe you start doing Human Resources (for example) for a Hotel, but after you have more experience, you can move to Human Resources from a company in a complete different sector. Of course you first need to see what you like, but personally I think that it is a degree with possibilities. And just one final thought, which is that in the end, after your degree, if you discover that you want to do something else, you can always do a masters in almost any other field and specialise in something else. Stay motivated!!! If you work hard, I am sure that you will do great!!🙌💪😃

      There are many different professions that you can do after you finish the degree, but it is true that many can be client/public facing roles. During the degree I had to do several group projects and presentations in front of the class. If you don't like this then there are probably other degrees in which it is more of you just sitting in a desk and listening to the teachers and not so interactive. Again though, I am just speaking from my experience. On the other hand, I did have colleagues who weren't so good with crowds/speaking in public and still completed the degree :) Hope this helps!

Is this degree will helpful if we are working for another industry like HR or marketing?can you please tell me ,and how is my decision?do you have any advices to give?

    • @robertalcaniz
      @robertalcaniz  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Aki!! Thanks for your comment. In regards to your questions, here is what I think, but remember that this is just from my personal experience in my university, so it might not be the same everywhere. 😄
      - Is this degree is related only to tourism and hospitality? From what I did, of course it is centred towards this, but you also take general finance, marketing or human resources classes. So it would be kind of like doing a degree in Business Administration but more centred in Tourism.
      -Is this degree will helpful if we are working for another industry like HR or marketing? From my experience you see that I am now working in HR for a non-tourism related company, so certainly it has helped me (also other colleagues in my department have studied tourism and are now working in HR). Of course if you want to get into this field specifically someone with a degree in marketing or HR might have better chances of being selected in the recruitment process, but if you are not sure what you want to do and still want a degree that opens many different doors to you, I think that Tourism can be a great alternative. (I suggest though doing internships in HR or Marketing if this is what you are interested in getting into after the degree as it will help you a lot in getting a job in the respective field).
      General advice I would give you is that, if you don't have clear what you want to do, I would go for either tourism & hospitality or a general Business Administration degree. Since as I said, it opens a lot of doors. 😃 Anyways, the choice is of course yours.

      - how long have you already been studying law? Does it make sense to quit now?
      - which are the average salaries in law/in the tourism industry?
      - the pandemic has shown as how hard it may be in tbe tourism industry...

    • @robertalcaniz
      @robertalcaniz  3 роки тому +2

      @Lali gave some very solid points. Generally salaries in law are higher than in hospitality, but as we all know, in life not everything is about money. I think that we all struggle in life to know what is it that we want to do, but even if you now study and work in law for 5 years (just as an example), you can still change industries at a later stage in your life. In fact, probably you will be even more valuable to companies with having a background in law and then switching to hospitality as you will bring a new perspective.

    • @robertalcaniz
      @robertalcaniz  2 роки тому

      Hi, you should consult this with each University, but I would assume that it is possible. In fact, Masters degrees were made so people could specialize on different topics after finishing a degree. In the University I studied at (CETT-UB) I think that it would be possible for instance. Not trying to promote it or anything, simply speaking from something I know.

    What's the main differences between Tourism and hospitality management and Event management ?

    • @robertalcaniz
      @robertalcaniz  3 роки тому +4

      Hello! Thanks for the comment :) I would say that they are certainly different degrees, but that share some things in common. It is clear that events are a big part of the Tourism and hospitality industry, but the industry is much more than just events. I have not done any degree on events, but I would say that in tourism and hospitality, although you do touch some aspects of events, I personally only did a couple of subjects on this topic. If I had wanted to, I could have specialised more on that, but I didn't.
      Summarizing, the main points I find are:
      -Events degree is more focused than tourism and hospitality. If you have clear that you want to do events, then it might be good to study events directly, but if you want to have more possibilities, I would go for tourism and hospitality as you can also end up working in events.
      -Tourism and hospitality touches, many aspects of managing tourism companies, not just the event organizing ones, but also airlines, hotels, restuarants...

    Hello thank you for a great video and useful advice. Before going to University in the England I want to spend my gap year in Spain to live and work without pay in a hotel whilst learning the language as I feel this would give me a good idea of the hotel industry and help me with my studies at University. Do you have any advice on how I could get a job in a hotel in Spain despite not knowing the language and not having lived there before? Would it be better to work in a hotel that also has hotel in England and not just Spain? Is this too ambitious?

    • @robertalcaniz
      @robertalcaniz  3 роки тому +1

      Hi, sounds like an interesting plan. I would advice you to check your specific situation because working and not getting paid for it is really only possible with internships (which are done signing an agreement with a University). Unless there is a University that can provide an agreement I find it unlikely that any hotel would take you for free as legally if you work anywhere in Spain you need to be insured. This means that either you have an employment contract or an internship one with a University.
      If you want jobs in hotels you can look in Hosco (it is like Linkedin but specialized in the tourism and hospitality industry). If you want to get a general overview, perhaps a smaller hotel (max 80 rooms) will be better as you will do more multitasking and get to know the processes much more in depth (also more chances of actually talking to the GM). If you go to a big chain like Marriott, NH, W, Mandarin,... you will have worked for a reputed brand, which is good, but if you get a job in reception, you will most likely then specialise a lot in that area and not see so much of the rest.
      If you need to get a job somewhere to get a good overview of the hotel industry I would go for receptionist/front desk agent. You are the main point of contact with the client and are in touch with many departments + know pretty much anything going on in the hotel from the operational side.
      Regarding the language, speaking no Spanish is not a big drawback (depending on which area you want to work in), but it would help you to speak it.

      Hi Jasmine, thanks for sharing! Looks like you have quite some experience, but the good/bad is very subjective. First I don't know your age and secondly, it also depends on what you are aiming towards, I would say that if you want to end up being supervisor/manager or higher in the sectors that you have mentioned, then you are on the right path, but I don't know exactly what your goal is, so for the reasons mentioned it is hard to tell 😄

      I would assume that nº1 is more targeting the tourism + different activities of leisure (theme parks, guides, all sorts of outdoor activities...) while the second one might focus more on F&B + accommodation. However, you should just check the subjects that each of the studies are offering and to see better the differences.
