Tabac is my favourite shave soap, if not my favourite scent.. It’s old world to me, & reminiscent of the men I looked up to when I was a kid.. Combined with the aftershave & balm I love it.. By the way, the soap container isn’t porcelain but glass.. It’s called milk glass, & it’s made by introducing bone ash into the heavy glass mix.. A renaissance invention.. Pretty cool...
between tobac and cella, my grandma says Im another version of her dad. apparently there is a ton I have in common with him, but the finale for her was seing me on the back porch going from a strop to a stick of Tobac. Apparently tobac and cella where also his creams.
Thank you for a great description of the performance of the product. A year ago I was considering purchasing Tabac, because at least, I could go to a store and smell the thing before purchasing it. For me, maybe I was brainwash or something, I have alot of difficulty buying something that I didn’t touch first or smell. So I was leaning toward a product like Tabac. But then I discovered Maggard and their offering of samples and It open me to a new world of products made by artisans. In the end I didn’t purchase Tabac, and I’ve discovered incredible soaps. So I was curious when you made that video on Tabac, it reminded me of the dilemma I had back then.
The Virtual Groomroom, There is nothing very original in my favorite soaps. Since I’m in the beginning of my second year in wet shaving, my list will be short. I will start with my favorite soap base. For me right know, it is Barrister and mann and I love Seville. Close second for me the base is different to B&M but it is has good : Wholly Kaw, I love Fougère Bouquet and I really really, really love King of Oud, (the new base is excellent, but I haven’t fall in love with any scent that I have sampled). I also tried the four samples of Gentleman Nod’s and I was suprise that Georges was my favorite scent (for me very good soap but B&M and Wholly Kaw are better), In the same level to Gentleman nod, I like also Steerling soap, one of the scent I loved last summer was Island Man (tried alot of samples from them). A soap base that is OK, and it became OK only because I work on the lather like you do. That soap base is Rasorock, I like the scent of Tuscan Oud.Finally the first real wet shaving soap that I bought, without knowing what I was doing was TOBS Lavender. Well not really, I learned to lather using proraso ( it is widelly available in Montreal), when I used for the frist time a De razor it was with TOBS. And 18 months ago, I would have tell you it is the best soap, I’ve ever used. Today, after trying all those artisan soap... Let’s just say that it is not in the same league of product. P.S. my adventure was not always positive, there was a couple of time when I tried some samples and the soap had an uncomfortable effect on my skin. So you have a pretty good resumé of my wet shaving adventure up till know. You share so much with us. . My way of showing my gratitude is taking the time to give you a detail answer. Hope it wasn’t to long...
I have a puck that I got to refill an empty container, but have been saving to try until you did a video. Just had my first shave with it! It does remind me of my grandparents' house, so I see how that could put some people off. Personally I think it has a nice warm and classically masculine scent. Goes well with the Nivea balm which is my go-to right now. No complaints here! I expect this to be a staple in my den for a long time to come. Pre: Shower and pre-shave oil from Montana Natural Shave Company Blade: Second use Super Stainless Shark (burning through these as a control while I try out soaps) Razor: WCS Open Comb w/ 175B Handle (aka 'The Big Boy') Brush: Perfecto 100% Pure Badger Soap: Tabac puck Post: Alum block & Nivea Balm
The Derby Shave Stick smells very similar to Arko. A cleaning product type lemon is how I usually describe it. Lemon pledge is what is smells like. I like the tabac scent to shave with but it's not one where I will use the aftershave with it. I get a floral/powdery type tobacco scent from it.
I dig tabac. For me it is a winter scent and soap, I get a big green tobacco flower scent from it but I just don’t like it during the warm San Diego summers. Thanks for the shave. And rumor is that it is the same formula as fine accoutrements shave sop.
Tabac was one of the first soaps I tried when I first got into wet shaving. The scent actually brings back good memories of my grandpa. He always wore English Leather, which has a few scent notes in common with Tabac. Tabac is also what I judge other soaps against. It’s kind of a benchmark to me. It isn’t the best soap, but it is good at basically everything. If there is ever a time that I just needed a soap that I know will work, I reach for Tabac.
Tabac is quite common where I am from and I avoided it for long time due to old people smell. My wife bought it for me once so I started using it. I didn't like the scent at first, but the performance was great. So, in time the scent grew on me.
I am firmly in the “love it” camp for Tabac. It reminds me of living in Germany. If I could only use one non-artisan soap going forward, it would be Tabac. Granted, I have yet to try Mitchell’s Woolfat.
Indifferent. Yup, that's the way I feel about the scent of Tabac. I always thought it was odd that they discontinued Irisch Moos shaving soap and kept Tabac. Irisch Moos was a fougére scent, I believe. The performance of Tabac really is very good. I agree with others commenting that Derby has a scent similar to Arko. Both Turkish soaps. Derby comes in a stick or a small cardboard tub. "It just works" could be the theme of Timeless Tuesday. " Most of these commercial soaps do just that. And, probably in any water, which is what makes them so great for travel along with the stick format. Cheers! -Rob
I consider Derby shave stick close to the same scent as Arko. Tabac is a favorite of mine. I have the shave stick, but plan on getting the ceramic bowl once I run out.
Nice one Jack. I've re-subscribed again. Always loved your channel, but found everything you used out of reach for my budget, or unavailable in the UK. Love that you're giving some of the less expensive products a shot. Nice one. PS. I love the expensive stuff, gives me idea's for the future, but I have found on a few occasions that I've purchased expensive, and it's just not worked for me at all.

Another good review Jack I’ve used Tabac and find the performance and scent really very good it just works really well for me , on a side note I just got some distilled water and a nerdy squeeze bottle and it’s been a game changer for me in terms of making a quality lather thanks for the idea 👍
The stick you mentioned that smells similar to Arko is probably Derby. Haven't gotten my hands on one yet, but I have heard a lot of people talk about it.
Great Video Jack💈👍🏼yeah tabac is a German classic scent and I can’t agree more with you than you said.. It’s also the year of my father 1959 which he passed away last year here in Ottawa..I haven’t got a chance to get one but when I can I will get one in Ceramic Bowl.. Also I ordered some Astra Superior Stainless Pairing with my Karve SS Polished Shave was just Outstanding 💈👍🏼👍🏼 Take care Alan H
Jack, you stated it perfectly when you said the scent is polarizing. The comments proved that. I happen to be on the “love it “ side and when I traveled to Germany I would always get some at the Munich duty free. The performance is the key . there are many artisans that have great scents but sucky performance.
Great video. Rotten leafs.? Wtf. No, that i do not get. I absolutely love it since i first smelled it. Imo, it is perfect, and i like the strength of the scent/smell. If i had to use only one soap, this would be it. 🤩 I liked your review. 👌😁
Very cool video Jack. Tabac is my current daily use soap. I personally really enjoy this scent, as for me it is one of the few sweeter smelling soaps that do not leave something smelling candylike n my skin. Behind this "weird" smell in the front is some depth I totally dig. Most definitely I agree with your post shave description and overall performance. Are you aware of a mass produced soap that has better post shave with the same lather performance as tabac or are there only artisan soaps left to try for getting this? Ty and take care
Hey Jack, I’ve heard that’s Fine soaps are made by the folks at Tabac. If so, I get the quality of Tabac with better scent. Keep up the good work, you’re at your best on Tuesdays.
Great video, what’s your thoughts on Fine soaps? Meant to be a similar (the same?) formula as Tabac but with more scent choices. I’ve not tried Tabac yet but enjoy Fine platinum (I know, an Aventus dupe, I’m sorry)
Do any Pucks or hard soaps will work? You can mix and match old soaps? to fit in any mug or cup that you like to use. like Mitchells' Wool Fat? Cut the bar soap up, put in a mug, cover the soap with a small amount of water, microwave for a minute or so? if it foams up, stop ? let cool you just went to congeal' place in the sun, until soap hardens use dry brush more water i use Dove soaps there cheap and good save your money spend it on your wife don't listen to the shave mafia. wheelchair Larry Merry Christmas

I got the Tabac stick a week ago and was amazed by the performance. The scent is nice in my opinion, but a little too old-timey to wear every day as a young guy. ....I got the aftershave anyways
Great video! This my sound weird or stupid 😂 Your channel is the only channel on UA-cam that I can not watch on my Chromecast. The audio and video is just all broken and choppy 🤷♂️ just curious why that is.
😂 That stick must be old. It should be white, not yellow as it looks on the video. I know since I have it and just checked! I like the slickness and smell as long as I use it only once per week. It’s maybe not as moisturizing as artisans but nevertheless a brilliant soap 👍🏻
Sir. This is my line in the sand. You know and I know that tabac smells like the bottom of an old ladies purse. It smells like old people f######. It is horrid and I had to endure that smell for 7 years every day in my mentors barber shop. When I opened my shop the first thing that I did was ban tabac from the joint. I don't care how good it performs. Tabac smells like warm s### in the summertime. Lol
The scent to my nose is downright awful, smells like an old persons home. Quite off-putting. If one wants the performance with a better scent, Fine Accoutrements is the way to go.

It's okay, not too bad. I wouldn't choose to smell like it if that makes sense.

It genuinely isn't offensive.

You're right, it has good performance in all metrics. Especially when directly comparing it to the rest of the mass-produced soaps.
I agree that the lathers just jump up from shave sticks which causes me to wonder why they aren't more popular. They seem to be less messy as well.
Amazing video Jack!
