@stickyfox The price I quoted for a backlit LCD is not an "estimate". The backlit display I currently have installed in my cz101 only cost 3 bucks on ebay, and there are plenty still available for that price, shipping included. While I understand your hesitation to order unbranded chinese electronic components on ebay, I've used several of these cheap lcds in past projects, and haven't had any problems. Anyway, thanks for the video. It's great that you took the time to put this up.
@autarkus11 Hello and thanks for watching! The CZ-101/1000 do not have a battery for memory, they actually have a big capacitor (47000uF) on the power supply board. It's only meant to hold the memory up for a few moments while you change the main batteries. You can put a battery in but it requires some minor modifications; I could post a video about doing this if anyone's interested, but I think someone else has already described it in a forum post somewhere (maybe with a 9V battery?)
Nowadays it is already possible to install an OLED or LED display, easily, just by desoldering the corresponding pins and soldering in the right places... I did it on mine, and it was wonderful, all lit up.
@jrmbrasher Hi and thanks for watching, The display on the CZ101 is a HD44780-type (14-pin) display. You can get them from a variety of sources new and used. The only trick is finding one that fits in the very cramped CZ101 chassis. I have not found one that drops right in, but companies like Digi-Key, Mouser, and All Electronics sell parts that are "close" in size; you may just have to dremel the metal bracket a little to get them to fit.
@DrSuperSparkle Thanks for the comment. The point of this video is to demonstrate how to properly disassemble and reassemble the keyboard with all the parts in the right place (or to rebuild a board that someone has taken apart and screwed up). You can get the parts anywhere. I think your estimate of $3 for eBay mystery scrap is a little low, but a you can get a quality brand backlit part new from a reputable source for about $12.
Great video! Have you ever taken apart a memory cartridge for the 101? Or made one? Thank you 🤓 also, do any processors/chips require thermal paste? The display contrast adjustment pot, is there an access hole on the case bottom?
@@stickyfox I recently found a tossed out CZ 101 (in a pile of curbside stuff!) & It seems to work! Haven't fully tested it yet. Thank you 🤓 didn't find a memory cartridge.
@DrSuperSparkle I'll admit, I hate supporting the Chinese economy. They're sucking ours dry and they'll own the whole country soon. But among my other reasons is reliability (unless you like disassembling CZ's!) and being sure that the parts are EMI compliant so you don't get audio noise from the display. I stick with what I know works. Plus if you've only got a few CZ's, ten or twenty bucks for a sweet upgrade isn't a big deal. But your opinion is every bit as valid as mine. Thanks again!
Hello! The CZ230 uses a custom LCD, not an industry-standard one like the 101, so finding a replacement is tricky. You can pretty much only salvage them from other 230's.
Hi, I have a problem with cz-101. B and F keys are not working on 2,3,4 octave, on 1 they works. Can you suggest what problem can it be? I looked at repair manual, but it a bit complicated for me.
I don't get it. If you are going to go through all the trouble of replacing the lcd, why not put in a nice color backlit lcd? They only cost like 3 dollars on ebay, which is probably a fraction of what the actual casio replacement part costs. The only catch is that you have to file out the screw holes a bit to get it to fit the mounting bracket. Then you can use your cz101 on a dark stage!
Most CZ models use a standard HD44780 2x16 display (with a 14-wire interface). They are available most places that sell Arduino gadgets. The trick is finding one that will fit in the synth. You can modify or replace the metal bracket to make most display boards fit, but there is very little room so try to find the thinnest one available. If it's much thicker than 6-7 cm, it won't fit. I recommend carefully measuring your old one first before ordering a replacement.

Hey, this was really helpful. Thanks!

I have! And I have! I should really make a video of it... As for the contrast pot... I don't think so but I can check!

Nice vid! Can you please point me to where I can buy "the best" replacement display?
i got a cz 1000 but cannot find an lcd for it in the uk

Can you advise what type of LCD is in the CZ 230S and potential replacement? All documentation simply states that it is a "Numeric LCD Display"

That's what I figured, thanks for your help.
Hi,
I´ve got a cz 1000. the memory battery is not in place. can you tell me what kind of memory battery is needed?
