Hey everyone it’s Terry Cutler. You ask questions, and I answer them. Here’s a question I get asked several times a week. The question is “how do I know if my Pc has been hacked” or how do I know if my webcam has been hacked and are people as spying on me”. Well…., let’s get that answered…..NOW welcome to the #AskTerryCutler show!
Hey everyone it’s Terry Cutler and I want to show you how a simple command line tool can provide invaluable information about what's happening on your system to find out if your PC has been taken over by a hacker or malware.
Ok so the first thing you want to do is close as many open programs as you can like Microsoft outlook, skype etc. this will allow us to try to find unwanted communication from applications we don’t know about. In my case I’ll leave my apps open so you can see activity.
Once you’ve done that, press the start button, and type CMD which is short for command prompt and press enter.
Once the command prompt has been opened, you’re gonna type netstat -ano. What we’re doing here is asking windows to list all listening and open ports that the system is talking to.
As you can see, a ton of stuff just scrolled off the screen. Let’s have a closer look. Let me adjust the size here and scroll up…ok.
What we’re looking for is any established communication. “established communication “means your computer is talking to another device on your network or somewhere on the internet at this moment.
here we have our local address which represents your computer IP. everyone’s will be different so don’t worry about this. As you can see my PC has 127 addresses. Don’t worry about these either because my computer is running special software called VMWARE which most of you don’t have.
As we go right we have foreign addresses which are other devices your computer is talking to, the current state of the connection and finally we have the PID (process identifier). A PID is like the name of the software that’s talking on this connection which we’ll use to investigate.
Now we’ll want to open the windows task manager by right clicking on the task bar and select “Start task manager” you can also get there by press ctrl-alt-delete and choosing task manager. Once it’s open click on the processes tab. Select view at the top, and choose select columns. You’ll notice that PID is unchecked. Please go ahead and check that box. By the way, all windows versions can do this, not just windows 7.
Now you’ll notice some numbers that showed up beside the names of the processes. For simplicity reasons you’ll need to click to sort the process ID from smallest to largest so we can find stuff quickly. You’ll also notice a button called “show processes from all users”, let’s make sure we press that aswell so we can see everything this PC is talking to.
Now, what you would do is match up the process numbers with the name of the application running it. For example, we have process Id 4668 running twice what could this be. Well once we get to 4668 we can see that skype is using this ID which is most likely safe. So keep going through this list and if there’s something you’re not sure of, google is your friend at this point. You could also right click and select properties and this might give you a little more insight into what program it is and where the file is located.
If you’re still running into trouble though, you’ll need to contact your family IT guy or bring it into a BestBuy to get serviced, or for a fee, my team or I could also help you out.

People that spy on your computer are such low lives. They need a reason to mess with you because they are either jealous or just generally pitiful individuals that need to get a life.
Something wierd happened to me but I don't think it was a hacker. When I opened my laptop I couldn't click the password space to enter my password, then the screen went black, then it went back to the login screen but it went from orange to black, then I turned it on and off and got in the laptop, but then I couldn't get online, so I went full shutdown and then back on and now I'm doing a virus scan and my disk usage went up a ton, but everything seems to be working.
I don't have any usb's on my laptop atm and havn't for a while. The disk usage is usually caused by these couple of files, but it's a complaint found by alot of people, so it's probs not a single hacker. The files are also in the right locations, whereas a fake version exists as a virus that I don't have, that would be in a different file location. The disk usage goes down eventually, and my hard drive space doesn't randomly go up, I usually check it. It's at the exact amount of the stuff that I willingly downloaded. I was freaking out at the time, I have a really shitty laptop that only costed like 100-200 bucks from 2007, so it can't run things in the first place and has only 2 gb ram. The disk usage going up has kinda just happened since I got it. The only thing besides the mouse thing that I've plugged in was when I first got it, was I think a usb that had all the games and my antivirus from my first computer.
well, I have shitty internet that's usually a download speed of 70kbs. Does that affect the disk? Idk lol I'm a noob at computers.
Idk, it's normal, uninfected windows files that randomly go up and bring the disk to 100% and then go down like 3 minutes later. If you're talking about memory, nothing takes up more than like, 110 mb at most.
Or simply voyeurists

I had serveal Emails all ruined
by one company
Google I've created over 25 emails all were locked
I type in my password Google says its wrong
after spending hours verifying who I am Google says We'll get in contact with you in 3-5 days
after waiting 5 days They say The Account Could Not Be Verifyed SO WTF DO I DO?!?
This process of creatinng a new email every month or so is getting old
I know serveal people who had the same problem and called Google's 1-800 number and google walked them though the same reset password steps I did after it said we cant verify the account the tech people didnt know what to do...

What about iMac. While my computer was logged off and my daughter was crying my computer started singing! Then late last night also while my computer was logged off a man was talking from my computer! He kept saying something but I didn’t understand, by the time I ran to the office door it stopped. So I ran and unplugged everything after that! I was always told iMac was the safest computer out there.
It’s very safe but maybe something got installed where it asked you to enter the master password and someone did.

I am using Windows 10 and in Task manager there is no 'Show Columns' under View
It's under the details tab. they moved it

Found it a long time ago. BTW, I called up a couple of services, they it doesnt mean someon is spying on me.
My laptop camera came on half an hour ago and is still on. This happened the other day and i said stop using my camera and it went off. Now it just has stayed on and won't go off. I am really worried. As soon as I started to do as you say it turned off very quickly. Someone was listening out there.
Did it say what was using the camera ?

Im using windows 8.1 and i cant find select colums when i hit view on task manager
right click on rows and choose pid, i just did that, it is not under view
select the "Details" beside "Users" up there

Computer hacking always starts with bloatware on your system pre-installed by OEM. That's why it's always better to build your own system and install the full version of Windows where nothing is OEM.

@@TerryCutler1 i know using it now for 3 years now 😂 but also its a good idea to also disable the cam in the device manager if you never use cam ..like me ..plus using advanced systemcare pro it has a feature that fixes all the vulnerabilities in windows 10 like remote access and telemetry service and other security holes which hackers take advantage ..but kaspersky internet security is a top product ive used bitdefender good detection but the performance is shit even on fast cpu ..and norton antivirus is nothing compared to these products what a shame

My friend pm'd me on fb with HER icon and HER phone number and we chatted in REAL TIME. Her msg was worrisome-- (a version of Nigerian lottery scam.) When she wouldn't respond to my concerns, I called a mutual friend to check on her-- Only to find out I was the one being scammed! And "she" wasn't my friend I was LIVE talking to! How can I make future hackers afraid of me during conversations when I realize this in the future? How can I track them as we chat? What computer checks should I run after such a hack? Thank you.

Pantaleon hi thanks for question. It just simply means that the application is communicating with the location. Doesn't mean you're hacked, unless it's an application that you don't recognize

If you'd like, I have a team that could remote into your computer to clean that up for a fee.
I've had this happen to me. Your computer is not hacked. It is not disabled. And nobody can see your personal information. The people on the other end of the phone number they provide are not "official Microsoft employees".
Now that you know your info is still safe, how should you fix this? Do everything you can to delete your web browser's history and cookies. This can be difficult because the pop up usually has some clever way of keeping you from clicking anything else. For example: one of these pop up ads that I once got would trick my computer into thinking that I wanted to print something. It would open the printer options. Simply having the "ready to print" window open kept me from clicking on anything else except for the printer window. It took me like an hour of force quitting my browser and trying to find away around the printer pop up to access my my history and cookie options and reset them.
I have not used my pc in a while but the last time I was using it I saw my webcam light turn itself on for a second then off idk if it's some glitch or if I have been hacked

😑 the camera app on my computer keeps turning on. the little light doesnt shine but when i shut down my computer it says this program is is preventing shut down, when i never turned it on. it creeped me out so i put tape over it.

is it possible someone to see what is happening from my camera if its not showing me its turned on ?
This wont work against rootkits that hide the network traffic, unless you run a packet sniffer at the gateway of the device to check for strange packets, and even still that assumes the malware actually connects to something over the internet. Best rule is if you think you've got a virus, wipe the drives and reinstall the operating system. And even still wiping the boot drives won't work against malware that updates microcode to the bios or the hdd/ssd/cpu, aka boot-kits, to fix that you would need to re-flash the official firmware's back to the respected devices to be safe and ensure the firmware update actually happened and that the virus firmware didn't fake such functionality by dumping the flash storages. Wiping boot drive also wouldn't help against a physical tamper such as a pcie device that tampers with memory etc.
I think for your personal devices as long as you name isn't James Bond and you haven't pissed off the wrong guy, a Windows Restore or reinstalling what ever operating system you use will do fine.
But against a determined and motivated hacker you're probably screwed, the attack vectors are endless.
Another thing is that as technology becomes more readily available these kinds of capabilities will probably end up in the hands of naive skids in the near future if they haven't already, so simple netstat/wireshark wont do the trick unless you use a gateway/seperate uncompromised machine to sniff the network packets.
All it takes is one elite hacker to share proof of concept binaries, code or information with the wrong person and it'll spread like wildfire. Rootkits are already available and easily obtained to your average skid googler if you know what to search for and you know the basics on how to run simple linux commands to compile the malware. So people really should be spreading the information on how to undo such malicious actions because the amount of companies/people/rack hosting that have been hacked and are unaware of it i think is extremely high.
Hi @kek correct. This video is designed to get people started. Rootkits or RATs are very difficult to find and to troubleshoot for a non-technical person. Thanks for sharing your advice. Really appreciate it.
I was currently using the default windows anti-virus but soon switched to Kaspersky premium trial(antivirus)and within a few minutes, it told me that Windows hosts are using the webcam, what does that mean?
That's suspicious for sure. I would have to investigate that closer to find out.

In Windows 10 click on the "Details" tab, then right click on the column heading row to hide or show columns.

go into details.

So I was on roblox and the computer and the light next to the camera turned on and I put sticky notes on the camera and the light is still on and I’m still on roblox help edit: wait never mind I opened FaceTime on accident and forgot and put roblox so I couldn’t see the FaceTime but I exited out FaceTime and the light turned off PHEW I WAS TERRIFIED

Most computer problems are not caused by computer hackers. It is more common for a computer to be hijacked by a virus then to be hacked. It can be difficult to detect a hacker on a computer because the hacker will hide or disguise their actions. Below are the most common things that you may notice after a computer has been hacked.
New programs installed
In some situations, you may see new programs or files on the computer. If you are the only user on the computer and new programs are installed, this could be an indication that it has been hacked. However, there are also several legitimate reasons why a new program may appear on the computer, as listed below.
Operating system or other program received updates that included new programs or files.
When you installed a new program, other programs may have been installed with it. For example, it is common for plugins and other free programs to have a check box asking if it is ok to install a new Internet browser toolbar or antivirus program on your computer. If you don't uncheck these boxes, the additional new programs are installed.
If you suspect someone may have used your machine, ask if they installed a new program.
Below is a listing of programs that may indicate a hacker has been on the computer.
Backdoors and trojans are by far the most common programs installed on a computer after it has been hacked. These programs can allow the hacker to gain access to a large amount of information stored on your computer.
IRC clients are another common way for a hacker to get into a computer or remotely control thousands of computers. If you have ever participated in an IRC chat, your computer could have been hacked.
Spyware, rogue antivirus programs, and malware might be an indication of a hacker. More commonly, however, they are a sign that your computer has been infected via download or visiting a hijacked page while on the Internet.
Computer passwords have changed
Online passwords
Sometimes, after an online account is hacked, the hacker changes the password to one or more accounts. Try using the forgot password feature to reset the password. If your e-mail address has changed or this feature does not work, contact the company who is providing the service. They are the only ones who can reset your account and give control back to you.
Local computer password
If your password to log into your computer has changed, it may have been hacked. There is no reason why a password would change on its own.
Lost or forgotten Windows password.
E-mail spam being sent
When an e-mail account is taken over, the attacker almost always uses that account to spread spam and viruses. If your friends, family, or coworkers are receiving advertising e-mail from you, your e-mail may be compromised. Log into your e-mail account and change your account password.
Tip: E-mail addresses can also be spoofed without hacking the account. After changing the e-mail password, if your friends continue to get e-mails you have not sent, it is likely someone is spoofing your e-mail address.
Getting bounce back e-mails from addresses I don't know.
Increased network activity
For any attacker to take control of a computer, they must remotely connect to it. When someone is remotely connected to your computer, your Internet connection will be slower. Also, many times after the computer is hacked, it becomes a zombie to attack other computers.
Installing a bandwidth monitor program on the computer can help determine which programs are using bandwidth on your computer. Windows users can also use the netstat command to determine remote established network connections and open ports.
However, there are multiple legitimate reasons why your Internet connection may also be slow.

Unknown programs requesting access
Computer security programs and firewalls help restrict access for security purposes. If the computer prompts for access to programs you do not know, rogue programs may be installed or it may have been hacked. If you do not know why a program needs access to the Internet, we recommend blocking access to that program. If you later discover these blocks cause problems, they can be removed.
Tip: A firewall prompting you for access may also just be someone trying to probe your network, looking for open or available ports.
Security programs uninstalled
If the computer's antivirus program, anti-malware program, or firewall has been uninstalled or disabled, it can also be an indication of a hacked computer. A hacker may disable these programs to help hide any warnings that would appear while they are on your machine.
Note: It is also possible for a virus to disable the antivirus program or malware to interfere with the anti-malware program.
Computer doing things by itself
When someone is remotely connected to a computer, they can remotely control any device on that computer. For example, a mouse cursor could be moved or something could be typed. If you see the computer doing something as if someone else is in control, this can be an indication of a hacked computer.
Modem users
If the computer is dialing the Internet on its own, it is an indication that a program needs to connect to the Internet. It is common for programs like e-mail clients to do this to check for new e-mail. However, if you cannot identify what program needs Internet access, this could be an indication of a hacked computer.
These symptoms may also be an indication of a virus or malware infection in the computer. Viruses often attempt to establish an Internet connection to send data from your computer to a malicious destination.
Internet browser home page changed or new toolbar
If you notice that your web browser configuration has suddenly changed, this may be a symptom of virus or malware infection. Examples of sudden browser changes include your home page changing, a third-party toolbar being added, or your default search engine changing to something you don't want.
Its always better to have a security installed in your computer, I prefer Microsoft Certified Software's, I think Windows Defender alone is enough to save your device and data.

Much easier way of doing this, free of charge, no need to contact any experts.
Go to the Comodo Security site and download a tool called Killswitch. It's either standalone or part of a pack called Cleaning Essentials.
When you run it, it will show a long list of all processes running on your PC and will indicate if each one is safe, or not. You can also see internet connections.
Needless to say, if Killswitch lists an unsafe application, you can immediately try and terminate it. Then you run their free virus and malware scanner to permanently remove the nasty code.

OK somone plz help i went on the deep web and clicked on a link some hacker got a hold of my using i think a rat file i disabled remote access on my pc and my web cam because he was spying on me it turned blue ever since ive been paranoid it happened on one day he even changed my background pic to his face and then i switched it back and he changed it to porn plz currently for two weeks there hasn't been any activity but i think he just wants me to let my guard down

Oh. That's absolutely a scam then. I've seen similar exploits used by scammers like that. If something like that happens, NEVER give them remote access, they could completely ruin your computer, I remember once the guy called them out for being scammers and since they had remote control they tried to delete system32. Most likely it was either a virus infection doing the exploit, a pop-up site, a redirect site, or other forms used to scam and trick you. Just in case it used a virus, download malwarebytes anti-malware for free (plenty of tutorials on youtube for that) and do a full scan, or custom scan depending on the version, and select as much you can if it's custom to scan the maximum amount of files. Malwarebytes Anti-malware is considered by many to be the best antivirus, and it has a free version, the only downsides to it being free is that you have to scan to detect viruses, where the full version blocks malicious websites and detects and quarantines viruses automatically, which is very handy.

I was gonna watch an episode on gogoanime, and to do so, I had to skip an ad by clicking "skip ad and watch video", but then directed me to another tab that said that I should download an extension. I didn't want to, so I tried to quit the tab but it did not let me. There was a computer voice that told me that I can't leave the tab, so I immediatly shut down the computer and I don't know if it really did download.
