Palazzo Dona Giovanelli was sold for twelve million euros and will be converted into a luxury hotel. It is sad that Venice, my town, is wall to wall hotels. Yes, the old families have long ceased to be able to maintain places like that and have decamped for the terra firma or their own attics.
Sign of the times I am afraid. No one can stop the march of time and new ideas the only Avenue open is to do the one thing most ppl nickname luck but it's real name is be Prepared last name: for the most outcomes possible. otherwise all that is left is just move to the attic and long for the old days, and that is no way to live fulltime. Nostalgia is only healthy in small dosages.
Yes, extremely sad. I weep for all the Venetians who have been driven out - after having their homes there for generations - by the enormously rising prices.
Well, the value of my house has skyrocketed in the last 25 years but that does not affect me because, unless it sinks, it is staying put and I am not selling. I know families that have been in their places since 1313. The fact that their house is now worth $25 million only affects them because some of the relatives who are co-owners could be seduced by the cash. Rent is high but maintenance is worse. And everything consumed must be brought from somewhere else. And Venice is not the great trading country that it once was and jobs are scarce. Who wants to work in a tourist trap and sell masks, tee-shirts and hats? So people who do not have a stake in the city, i.e. a money producing property, move to Marghera or Mestre, live in a flat and work in an office. Venice used to be a Rotterdam, Shanghai and United Arab Emirates all rolled into one. It could, therefore, afford itself and wear the most precious and expensive jewels. Now it has become the precious jewel itself, which it can no longer afford.
Gosh, if only I had a billion Diego.... For some unknown reason Venice calls to me. I’ve only been there once and then only for two days, but prior to my visit and many times since, Venice will be in my dreams. How fortunate you have been to live there. I pray the waters don’t continue rising. I also pray I get to return one day. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. Blessing to all you and all your country men and women.
Wow, what gorgeous beauty. Those are way cool rooms for a photo shoot. I would like to here more timeless music with the photography however & pass on the technical noise.
Absolutely gorgeous & you can feel the history seeping out of every minute crevice even through the net. I can imagine great balls were held here during the Venice Carnival season. One day, I'd love to witness that first-hand.
Thank you for sharing, I absolutely loved wandering through this amazing Palazzo. I wish I could see it in real life, it is a treasure. I’m sorry that the family have had to move out, but glad that it will have another life and that it’s rooms and stairways will echo with voices and footsteps...
I have always, always, always wanted to see inside one of these old, how do you say, palazzo. This place is so beautiful, a treasure around every corner. I wonder who will buy it. Of course they had better restore it and not remodel it... you know... granite counter tops, built in vacuum cleaner, etc. . I usually never see a home that I wish I could own... but this is different. On a darker note, I hope they can save Venice before it sinks into the lagoon. The FBI is probably going to track me down for saying this, but I would drop a bomb on any of those monstrous cruise ships, floating malls, that even came close to entering the Grand Canal.
You can see she was once truly grand, but after being flooded and neglected, she's falling apart. Sad to see. She's a living piece of history that deserves to be saved, but for how long with the rising waters?
The waters are not raising, Venice is sinking! Climate change is a hoax to introduce a carbon tax on gullible people. Don’t be fooled by the EU! PBS’s NOVA program on the history of mankind proved with ice core samples man has nothing to do with climate change, it’s a natural 20,000 year cycle caused by the change in tilt of the earths axis.
G Howard I would like to see you explain the to the people of Marshall Islands, Solomon Islands and other Pacific Islands that have lost quite a bit of land.
Kate Hobbs they are sinking! Climate Change caused by man is a hoax to collect a carbon tax. NOVA proved using Ice core samples that the earth has a 20,000 year climate cycle caused by the changing tilt of the earths axis. If the sea level was sinking would banks be loaning money on waterfront properties. Don’t be gullible!
The Palazzo looks amazing but it will take tens of million Euro just to fix it and bring to it's former glory... not to mention furniture and staff to run it...
If I had the money I would bring Italian people of knowledge to this place and get it restored carefully. No hotel no nothing. It‘s a tragedy the old families of Venice sell their souls to strangers who have no respect for history.
@@katana5562 In Italy all these properties are protected. If you buy a properly like this one the "Istituto delle Belle Arti" supervises the restoration. For example you can't even hang a panting without their permission. They even decide the colours you can use for the walls according the historical records to make it look as close to the original as possible.
I live two blocks from the water on Long Island, you get a nice Summer breeze, and a cutting winter wind. Its a beautiful property, but I can only imagine the stench of those canals at low tide?
The tides flush the canals with fresh seawater twice daily. Rarely there may be an odor here or there but mostly the city always smells fresh because it is fresh.
good for art and music classes for disadvantaged beginners. what a great start that would be, learning, teaching, pupils toing and froing throughout all seasons. better than a big ship polluting the waterways and sea life with its large amounts of petrol and diesel consumption any day of the week.
Lee Morris Disadvantaged beginners should now occupy this noble house?111?? What about the truly disadvantaged family forced to leave their home? I say let’s endeavour to return this treasure to it’s rightful owners, not the coarse and cretinous rabble such as yourself!
Ellen Morse Sorry. I could never own such a thing. I used to be a kitchen porter, who became a busker, then through a series of misfortunes became a homeless beggar. I never attained a financial path so have no way of ever affording such a location. I am sorry for my crass explanations and bemoaning of criminality. It is true we must learn to encourage faith. We live and learn as we go through our lives. Failing Christ has become my latest revelation, sorry. God bless
Whaw.... its the only thing I can utter! This is so absolutely gorgeous! But no private family can keep up with. The maintenance of such a house unless you are called Bill Gates or someone in that order!
You have to have a very positive mind, to be able to invest in a house put on old timber under water, and just being hold up, by leaning shoulder to shoulder with your neighboring houses :)
Thank you. I would imagine that a property in Venice is not on the market for long. But I would also think that dealing with the art commission and the landmarks commission (not sure what Venice really calls them) is NIGHTMARISH.........
There are many buildings that still are in private hands but that are completely out of the market because it would be simply inadmissible that they could be sold and transformed into a hotel. There are many that, upon the extinction of the family that owned them were willed to the Italian State or the city of Venice or the Beni Culturalli. Palazzo Vendramin Callergi, the winter site of the Casino and offices of the Biennale, or Palazzo Rezzonico, Ca' Pesaro, Palazzo Grassi, Palazzo Labbia, the 5 Palazzi Mocenigo, or the Querini Stampalia, Ca d'Oro, Palazzi Foscari, Palazzo Farsetti, Palazzo Caotorta Angaran, Palazzo Pisani, and so on and on, are all owned by the nation, or city and are museums. Some palaces were allowed to deteriorate because the owners refused to sell for a variety of reasons. Palazzo Ruzzini looked pretty sad for a good 25 years and then was sold, completely redone at an incredible cost and now is a hotel. My own house began to exhibit a slight sagging in the rear garden. Architects and hydrologists were called. They declared that a "pocket" had formed in the clay and it would require the injection of concrete to stabilize the sub-soil. Concrete trucks were floated down the Grand Canal on immense barges at a cost that brought the entire family to a hysterical tear fest and the "pocket" was filled (11 trucks necessary). The city, responsible for the maintenance of the canal that runs on the side of the house paid for about 25% of the cost. About 500 cedar pilings, thinner and shorter than American telephone poles were pounded down, (very gingerly) under the façade of the house to stop erosion. The entire city is built on about 14 million wood pilings, with 1.3 million holding up the massive church of Santa Maria della Salute. The Beni Culturalli paid for the wood and for half the cost of installation.
sadly...you don't put IKEA furnishings into this place so......there's the rub! I can imagine that Millions of Euros would be needed to outfit this awesome place.
