- Interview with the CEO of ASFAT, Esad Akgün, on the premises of Istanbul Naval Shipyard, a facility owned by the Turkish Navy.
Mr. Akgün introduces ASFAT and answer our questions:
- on the current shipbuilding programs (PN MILGEM for Pakistan Navy and Hisar-class OPV for Turkish Navy),
- on the TF-2000 Anti-Air Warfare Destroyer project,
- on the strengths of the Turkish naval industry on the international market.
Created just 5 years ago, ASFAT (Military Factory and Shipyard Management) is a Turkish state-owned defense company. Placed under the jurisdiction of the Turkish Ministry of National Defense, ASFAT manages the facilities and capabilities of the 27 ordnance factories and 3 public naval shipyards to provide design, manufacture, maintenance, sustainment, and training for the global defense market.

I like the idea of the OPV and the prepared mounting platforms. Most vessels will not fire a single shot in their lifetime. They don't have to be armed to the teeth right from the start without a corresponding threat situation.

Pakistan Navy is in a rapid modernization process. 4 Tughril class Frigates, 4 Babur class corvettes, 4 Yarmook Class OPV, 8 Hangoor class Submarine, 20 Swiftships Gunboats, modernization of 4 Zulfiquar class Frigates... The Air Force will upgrade the JF-17 fleet to block 3 Standart, F-16 modernization from the US 450$, J10C + PL15. It's a real message to the political elite of (India)
Pakistan badly need attack helicopters both AH-1Z viper and Tai 129. Also transport helicopter like Super Puma.

@jaishriaurangzeb9205 nope AH-1Z viper have no chance now. Even if USA lift the weapons ban from Pakistan. Pakistan still not going to buy Vipers anymore. Currently Pakistan have 54 Cobras, 5 Mi35s for future 30 t129s are on order or maybe Pakistan will go for T929, mi35 and z10me are also on order.

Interesting Q. Did ASFAT offer any designs at Australian INDO PACIFIC 23? I know Australia could build their own warships but be good idea build relationships especially history from WW1 perspective.

Asfat also makes barbaros class turkis meko's upgrade and building of six turkish version of type 214 submarine. First one is comissioned. Also same shipyards builded 4 ada class corvettes and also İstif class Tcg İstanbul frigate. But now other 3 ships of İstanbul class awarded to Tais shipyards. They will build same time in 3 years also. Looks like Asfat will Focus now to tf-2000 or interim solution who named as-3600 frigates.
Also turkish private shipyars makes a good jobs in naval shipbuilding, for example Turkish rmk marines build 2 upgraded ada corvettes for ukraine navy, dearsan builded many more patrol vessel and modern frigate for turkmen navy they are seeking advanced frigate build for some african countries. On the other hand sedef is builded much more lct's and Tcg Anadolu for TN. And also turkish navy private shipyards did it good patrol and other naval vessels for foreign countries. One of them most famous one was builded by Yonca Onuk.
Türkiye have a great future in naval shipyard area
ASFAT is not the prime contractor of Barbaros-class MLU and Reis-class AIP submarine project. STM is the prime contractor of that projects.
ASFAT won the critical design work of TF-2000, but AS-3600 is just a conceptual design prepared for IDEF 2023, it's not a project yet.
