I never knew the full story. I knew the numbers of that pass, but was unaware of the full significance. An incredible story involving some extremely clever people😎👍
As amazing as this pass was, you have to give them credit for a heads-up race when Melanie could have pulled a "John Force" and drove it out of the groove or left late.
zamear0420 i think i would just have to laugh. If Tonys team could pull that off you would just have to accept that youve been beaten by brilliance and move on. Theres no point at all in being down about it. Sometimes you do your best and still get beat, it happens.
Haven't ran 1/4 mile since shortly after Scott Kalitta got killed. in 2008. Just look at the difference in 1/8th mile speeds, not even 280 mph on this pass, and they're at 300 mph now. If the engine would stay together long enough I'm sure it would figure out to high 4.20s now.
@@BB.......... It is unbelievable what they are running nowadays. I wish they would have left the funny cars run the laid back headers and then we would have finally seen them run 340 mph in 1000 ft. I guess 339.87 by robert hight will have to do. These machines boogie.
Can anyone explain to me the math that shows a 1/4 mile in 4.418 seconds is 337.58 mph? It seems to me that 0.25 miles / (4.418 S / 3600 S/Hr) = 203.71 mph To get 337.58 mph, they would have had to run 0.414 miles in 4.418 S.
Hey AB, the speed is 'top speed', not the 'average speed' that you are calculating. The top speed is measured in the 'speed trap', or 'mile per hour time zone', which starts 66' before the finish line. So, check my math, but that means they go thru the 66' trap in only 0.133 sec. As a side note, you NEED to go see an event live. I've been around it 45+ years, and you can never properly explain it to people.
@@TALLPaul67X Ok. That's an odd way to measure speed. When a runner runs 100m in 10.18 sec, we typically don't compute his top speed--we usually compute his average speed for comparison purposes with others. I had no idea they did that in such races. Thanks for the info.
SORRY....This doesn't qualify as "The Run" !!! This was a "Feat"...It took a "Compilation" of runs to set-up "The Run" and without those previous passes, Even with the performance on that particular final pass, while being without question a great pass, would have been just THAT...There are plenty of fans that will tell you Don "The Snake" Prudhomme's 5.63 at the US Nationals in '82 (AA/FC) is considered by MOST to be "The [pass] Run" including myself !!! I CHALLENGE YOU TO DIFFER !!!!.....Not trying to take anything away from "Team Shoe", That was definitely one for the books, But as I previously stated , It took a series of "hurdles" to make "The Run" itself what it was.
So what you're saying is that a 5.6 run was better than a 4.4 run, in a sport where completing in the lowest time wins and where records are measured in seconds? Oh and... ad populum.
Over hyped title, I thought it was going to be something historic like the first ever 3 second pass. Instead a story of someone winning a championship which kind of happens every season.
AJV80 .... I'm with you on that !!!....That's what they've considered this pass in particular to be and had nicknamed it "The Run" from the very beginning of which like you say; "Winning championships happens every season"...What's the big deal???...I agree !!!....What made this one special though is that they had to do EVERYTHING RIGHT from the moment they unloaded the car onwards (At the last race of the season if they were to win the Top-Fuel championship) ....AND THEY DID !!!! That hasn't ever happened in finals history (NHRA), But as I mentioned in a previous comment, Don "The Snake" Prudhomme turned-on a 5.63 arrow at Indianapolis raceway park during the US Nationals back in 1982 with a funny car which would have qualified him 10th in top fuel at that event !!! THAT will always be considered not "The Run", But "The Pass" and not just in my book, but most others as well !!!
And 17 years later, to the day, Doug finally won his championship in the same lane with the same crew chief!
I miss proper quarter mile drag racing. This is one race I remember very well. The good o’l days.
It’s so crazy to know I was there in the crowd that day. I was in middle school and remember the excitement. Great memory and amazing race day.
And now Doug no longer has to wonder. Now he finally got the championship.
I remember watching this live it was awesome

I remember this music from the first 'and they walked away'
1/4 mile was unbelievable and this shows why. I think Wally Parks would be turning over in his grave.
I was there at 16 years old! I was in the coke cola sweet watching history be made.
I just remember been jumping on my living room,so happy to see him winning!

He still needed the national record to win the championship though.
Yes but she still raced him!
THE RUN
Doug kalitta looked like he wanted to throw up

Such an amazing moment.
4.42 for the 1/4 in 2006 what are they running the 1/4 in 2021.

Im sure the cars today are more than capable of running the full 1320ft

@@Jay-jb2vr The way they tune them now they barely stay together for 1000 ft. There's a whole lot of difference between a 1000 ft and 1320 ft tune.

Yes, top speed. The 4.418 represents elapsed time only.
@Richard Harrold It's actually the trap speed ........ the average between the last 2 blocks.
missed the 402-meter drag racing track
Can I go to sleep? I’ve been binging NHRA videos. Like, just stop with the cool content please.
Go Army 🙂
Thought they we're running in late three's like 3.70
They were still running a full quarter mile then. The last several years only a thousand feet, hence the 3.70 times.
@@jimskelton7531, forgot about that, better for motor, less stress, less blow ups, but still miss it..
Doug was robbed

TIRED OF HEARING THE RUN who cares its done & over let it go
Did someone put a gun to your head and make you watch this?
TIRES OF HEARING YOUR BS
they have been going over 300 mph for a quarter century now...am i the only one bored of this?
Yes you are, cause there is nothing boring about running 300 MPH at any distance.
That was the fastest top speed ever at 336 mph. Nothing boring about that speed.
