Point of order: we DID get the e-Reader and these level cards in North America, but not ALL of them. Nearly half never left Japan, making the Wii U release the first legal chance we had to play many of these levels as well.
I'm glad someone pointed that out, I got these on my Wii U years ago, do u know HOW many were not included on the Wii U and are they available now on the Switch?
Perfectly timed video! I just played through the main game on the switch and SMB3 is still the best game of all time imo. This video has inspired me play the E Reader levels. Back in the day I thought the E Reader was the stupidest thing and never even thought about buying one.
There's a hack available of the GBA version with all of the expansion levels already unlocked by default. You and your spouse are quite the dynamic duo! Love the Mortal Kombat scream. Really good stuff from you both. Thank you 😎👍
When I was a kid I grew up in Canada. The neighbour across the road had a father who worked in Japan. I played Super Mario Bros 3 at his house for the first time in the summer of 87' which sounds crazy considering the game didn't even come out in Japan until October. However the reason I am leaving this comment is because the first level of Super Mario Bros 3 was different. The level was the same, only you started on a tall platform and had to jump off it. I remember my friend and I trying to get back up there jumping but couldn't. Crazy right? When I got my copy in the summer of 88' the game was like it was today and I never understood why his was different. I've tried for years to find them online and ask but no success. This video made me think of it.
Literally just came to the comments section to see if anyone else caught that too LMAO I literally backed it up to replay that bit like "did she just say what I think she just said....?"
Funny. I am from Dominican Republic, and I got a GBA SP with a copy of the game that surprisingly had the e-Reader compatibility. I just remember how confusing it used to be for me to see that weird "e-World" and not know what it was all about. Surely as you can imagine, e-Reader cards were never for sale in my own country either so that's that.
Unfortunately, we here in the U.S. and Canada didn't get all the cards. The most we got were either half of what Japan got or just a handful for the various titles that took advantage of the e-reader.
First, I would like to say how proud I am to support your channel and love love LOVE your content, Lady! As for the locked stages, I am in awe! I never knew about this even back then when I worked and ran Game Stop and now I HAVE to replay this masterpiece as a whole because that means none of us had ever truly beaten SMB3 because we did not play these super secret levels that were locked away! Let the fun begin this weekend tomorrow! I hope everyone here smashes that "LIKE" button and gives our lovely Lady a high five for being super sweet, super awesome, and super entertaining for teaching us something new each and every episode! Sending you and your hubby both a "High Five" because he is also full of awesome and one heck of a great guy who also makes UA-cam a great place to be!
I completely forgot about these. When I initially clicked on the video, I thought it was going to be about one of the two NES ROM hacks that contained levels not seen in the cartridge release. One that I know will come up in a search is called "Mario Adventure." I only had the first series of cards, so I missed out on a bunch of content.
I had to rewind to check since I wasn't sure how assets from a game released in 2017 could be in a gameboy advance title. Then I realised you meant Doki Doki Panic.
Just wanted to jump in and say that I am a recent fan. Looking through a catalog of game reviews throughout UA-cam, I stumbled upon your video of Super Mario 128 and I was instantly hooked. I am a recent subscriber and I have watched several videos since.
A couple of years ago, I have downloaded a saved file from Internet. I managed to copy it to my cartridge using the Retron 5, so I can play it on the regular GBA. 👍
I've got the day off work I've just cooked myself some pancakes and bacon having a coffee and watching fantastic content what better way to spend your day off
I remember getting some of those e-reader cards back when I first got into Animal Crossing on the GameCube. I even rang Nintendo in my country (Australia) to have some sent out to me (helped that my mother also plays Animal Crossing as I was like 15 at the time lol). I never played the extra levels in M3 though. Awesome video!
I discovered this in the Wii U virtual console recently. I'd just rather own the game than subscribe to the premium nso. I also prefer the Wii U over the Switch for virtual console games especially because the Wii U allows me to play the available DS games using the touch gamepad. Thx for the vid, cheers.
I feel like there won't ever be anything like the Wii U again. I find it gutting how it underperformed because it was amazing. For me the controller was the nicest and most comfortable controller ever and I loved how you could essentially have two screens at once for a game. Toky Mirage Sessions blew my mind too at the time, that's one of my all-time favourite games.
I am glad they re-released this with all the extra content again. This really is the best game in the NES library, with only a couple that even come close.
Just to point out that all these new levels were available since Dec 2015 in JP, Jan and March 2016 for US and EU respectfully as it was released on the WiiU. So it only took 13 years and not 20.
Didn't know about any of this, now I'm fangirling for more Mario content. Gonna go turn on the Switch Online and play them right now! Thanks for the share! 😀
Oh yeah, I heard about these levels. As I recall we didn't get all of them in North America until it landed on the Wii U. Some of them do look neat though with how the combined elements from different games in a single level.
It's funny that they added so many new features to the game that ended up not being seen by most. With all of these things and the amount of levels mixing things up they could have essentially made a Super Mario 3.5 with 4 of it's own worlds and story. I also believe the shoe is the most underused item in Mario 3 so I'm glad to see that it got some more usage in the extra levels.
What I find more interesting than these levels, the original SMB 3 for NES has 15 unused levels that are in the game's code and inaccessible through normal means, but can be accessed with Game Genie codes. Some of the levels appear to be earlier, unfinished versions of levels, while others are unique.
I remember gathering everything to get some of the levels, power ups and basically the earliest versions of speedruns. It was trippy to scan the feather card and use it in the main adventure.
I heard there was some controversy over a picture.. saw a quick video on it.... was wondering if there has been a dip in views/subs or something ?...... .. I normally dip in and out every few month's and binge watch and I missed all that stuff

Originally that Christmas they had released the first of three waves of the e-reader levels. They were fun and cool. It was also neat that the e-reader had released power up cards. I read though I think in 2007 some guy from another country downloaded them on his computer and used a laser print to print them out and have them work in his eReader. But I couldn't get that here. Finally in 2017 the Nintendo WiiU shop released the game with all the extra levels and I played them thoroughly enjoying thrm.

Calling Doki Doki Panic "Doki Doki Literature Club" without stopping for laughs has to be the mos trolling I have watched in a youtube video for a long time
I was going to point out these were all on the Wii U version, then I noticed you mentioned it. I didn’t think you’d miss that, but I care about the Wii U. Sort of. Haha.
I kinda completely FORGOT that the GBA e-Reader EXISTED (with the cards that unlocked stuff in certain GBA games). Really sucks, too, because it makes these games essentially have “sectioned-off” content that you can’t access unless you can get ahold of the actual cards (which I’m sure aren’t easy to find or cheap) or are able to hack into the software itself.
I felt obligated to provide a correction but these new levels were not locked on the cartridge. The thing is they were never on the cartridge to begin with! The e-reader levels are essentially DLC on a physical cards. The dot codes on the cards are actual code containing the new level structure. Really, the only thing on the cartridge having to do with the e-reader levels are the new assets taken from previous games in the Mario Advance series so that they would be at the ready for when a level got scanned in. Hell, there are some assets at the ready for the e-reader levels that just never got used but can be if someone were to create a dot code card with the correct code on it to put said asset into a custom level. The last thing I can mention is the version of the GBA game on Wii U and Switch is actually modified a bit. Normally the cartridge could save 32 e-reader levels before having to delete some to add more room for new levels. This was modified for Wii U and Switch so all the levels that were ever created could be included.
I wish they would just make the games for sale on Switch! I won't "Netflix" games I can already play on original hardware, I'd happily buy the ones I want Also there is a game for PSP called Wipeout Pulse. We never got the DLC for that game over here and I was always bitter about it but now I figured out how to run it on my computer all these years later 🤣 love the video!
Wow super amazing discovery and every time I see a classic Mario or Sonic it always make me want to pick up the sticks and get down on it again .. Great video
Wow! A re-release worth buying. I especially liked the reskinning -- it's much truer to the original NES game. My one and only peeve with Mario All Stars was that the updated graphics for the games all looked like SMBW. I hope this is a sign that Nintendo has recovered its mojo.
it's OK that our SMB2 is a Doki Doki Panic reskin...Shigeru Miyamoto and his crew worked on Doki Doki Panic, and when it came time to convert the game for American/international audiences, they approached the development of the game just like any other Mario game...
i wish mario had a thing where if you collect all the hidden one ups in the game it would change the remaining worlds up, they would look different and be harder to beat than if you didnt find all the hidden one ups.
I never got the GBA e-reader, let alone the cards, so I was beyond stoked to play those levels when they were patched-in to the Super Mario Advance 4 re-releases on the Wii U eshop and Game Boy Advance NSO app.
with the exception of battlestar galactica, i dont support remakes of anything.... but if you wanted to play those levels you could always find a rom that had them unlocked. recently i played smb3(the real one, not a silly remake) with a personal challenge...i beat every single level in every single world.... the game is even better than i remembered from my childhood.....i also found a level akin to 3-1 from smb. where you could get infinite lives legally.
I care about the Wii U version. In case I have to unsubscribe to Switch Online for financial reasons I can always play it on my Wii U. Speak for yourself Manson 😆
The main selling point for me to get an eReader was to play the classic NES games that at the time were not available anywhere else outside of hunting down the cartridges. I did get the Super Mario 3 card packs that were available, but with one GBA, how would I use them? Then I got the Game Boy Player and the link cable to connect my GBA to the GameCube. That worked.
If you had the e reader back in the day you could have unlocked 10 of those levels on the Gameboy cart. The other 10 would have required series 3 and 4 of the e reader cards to be released in the states.
Super Mario Advance 5 - A fan project to recreate a SMA styled port of SMB 1 on the GBA. I would include SMB 1, SMB 2 (Japan) and ANNSMB, all in a single cart. (Literally, there are 256 "valid" worlds in the SMB 1 cart; the 13 worlds of SMB 2 J and the 8 worlds of ANNSMB can be ported into the SMB 1 cart after world 8.) Might consider Vs. SMB as well...
It makes sense that there'd be 256 world indices (because that would be stored in a byte), but other limits apply for a physical SMB1 cartridge. The game was developed for and released on a cartridge with 32 kB of code/data storage and 8 kB of graphics storage, and they came up with all sorts of space-saving measures to make it fit. That said, the largest ROM size on the NES was 768 kB (6 megabits), so if you'd upgrade the storage to what Kirby's Adventure had there'd obviously be room for another 23+ SMB games worth of levels.
I remember grabbing an e-reader and the card pacs off the shelf at GameStop and the guy said to me..if you’re getting that for the extra Mario 3 levels, it isn’t worth it. Oh how wrong he was…
Nobody really bought the E reader anyways but the only way to play all the lvs in the USA was via the Wii U version or possible on the upcoming switch port of the GBA version.
Doki Doki Literature Club is my favorite Mario game. I haven't tried any of these stages, unfortunately, but they seem pretty interesting; there's a hack that enables them, but for whatever reason, I couldn't get it working. Might have to give it another shot.

I'm jealous you got Mr. Blobby. I'll trade you Wal-Mart for him.

Mario games are a force not to be messed.these games are well, in my opinion
You have until March 27th to buy this on the Wii U; or homebrew a Wii or Wii u. Just renting it on the switch seems like just a tease.
Had the card reader. Didn't know about the Mario 3 cards. Knew the classic game cards.
6:47 nightmare fuel
I still have my e-reader and all the cards lol. The e-levels were really awesome, some are real damn hard though.
I remember grabbing an e-reader and the card pacs off the shelf at GameStop and the guy said to me..if you’re getting that for the extra Mario 3 levels, it isn’t worth it. Oh how wrong he was…
Thought you were talking about the "Lost Stages" found in OG Super Mario Bros.3
Those are unlocked via glitches.
