Stumbled upon this place while on a road trip with my wife. Talked her into going. She was bored to tears and we walked around for almost 5 hours and I didnt want to leave grinning war to ear. We were the only people there in september a few years ago and the people were kind enoughto let us tour the truck restoration exhibit on our own. What an amazing collection. Had a great time. Thank you
Everything about that was good. Particularly exciting was seeing the clutch engage and hearing the whole contraption as it lurched forward. I want one! Thanks for that.
Show of hands! Who had to stop the video and pee after he filled the radiator??? Nice video and thank you from a CAT line technician for keeping this piece of history running!!!
Great video! Really enjoyed seeing it as my grandfather had one of these machines with a dozer. Never understood why he sold it until I watched this startup routine. He replaced it with an Allis Chalmers HD7 and later replaced that with the Caterpillar D4 that I still have. Alot of work done by crawlers over the years.

check fuel comming , check ignition point setted right-if you dont know that - tell me how many cylinders, and is it stright 4, v4,stright6, v6 , or v8- i can tell you witch piston must be up first and witch ventils must be open, or closed for to get it working...
I grew up riding in my Grandpa's 5400 so I have a love for John Deere but it saddens me to hear that kind of DRM, field-serviced equipment they have. Ah well, at least I don't have to deal with that playing FS19.
Imagine riding this beast with a couple of mounted machineguns into a battle like " alright rusty boi, ready for one last ride?" And then going down with this beast in the manliest way possible
Rainhill1829 Yeah. It was actually the first time I have ever seen this this style of before and I don’t think I’m going to forget for as long as I live !
After the next Carrington EMP,those pre-1994,equipment,and tractors, are going to be worth their weight in gold!! Steam traction, and multifuel engines, will rule the roost, and vultures also will have come calling!! Simply put,far too much dependence on technology that is far too delicate! They want WW3,but the aftermath,is something they don't want to consider! Thanks for a beautiful restoration, and love the sound!! Oldies, but goodies,Thanks!!
Nice Sixty and it started so easy (Heath and Safety are not involved as I did not see any High-Visibility jackets being worn while starting this machine lols) But the Sixty did just jump into life so I guess you know what your doing and look after this awesome machine. Thanks for the video dude ;)
These cooling systems where optimized to run water as water has a higher heat capacity per unit volume than antifreeze, as well not all of the machines seal up very well so we run water as leaks are not an issue
Thank you for posting . I have built scale models of the Russian versions, Holt supplied the technical help to start up the factories. Great to see a. " real one " . What a tribute to the engineering of the time that it still runs so well . John .
Hi , you bet, I agree about it being an honor. An interesting thing is the track system seems it never needed to be upgraded.Thunder models are bringing out the US 60 this October and the Russian version . Hope to see some more of your videos. John
I stopped paying attention on how to start this machine after the 4th step. Need notes and reminders to get this thing going. God bless these old timers who worked their tails off during these times.
can just imagine, one early morning you just finished you morning coffee, you walk you and begin work for the day. first you gotta go thuogh the process and start this beast up, and get it ready for a day of construction or farm work etc. just the sound alone to me sings mornings for some reason, and a day of hard work, idk why XD
Nice machine, there was one of these at this years great dorset steam fair(uk), it said on the information board that i would burn 6 gallons of petrol (gas) per hour. it had been converted to propane, you have a super museum thanks for all the videos
she is gorgeous I would love to see what she could still pull thanks so much for posting this video reminds me of the days working the farm with my grandfather when I was little and our antique tractor. still an equipment operator to this day but those old ones are special.
you could see the reliefs in the flywheel, the bar will only transmit torque in one direction, so as soon as it tries to start it kicks the tip of the bar out of the flywheel. not quite as dangerous as it looks.
0:14 el mismo Tractor Caterpillar que Tenía el Empresario Argentino Carlos Casado , QUE ALQUILÓ JUNTO CON SU TREN A VAPOR TROCHA ANGOSTA AL EJERCITO PARAGUAYO 🇵🇾 en la Guerra Del Chaco !!!
Brilliant video. They certainly had a sketchy way of starting them back in the day though. I wonder how many limbs were broken or amputated in the process......?
As long as you keep your body out of the rotational plane of the flywheel there really is little danger to your body, it just takes a bit of technique.
As a kid I always loved the newer machines today antiques like this I find amazing to see what my ancestors had to work with. The starting method alone is highly questionable 😂
Rainhill1829 i figured. I didnt say that to be mean. But if this is the case id park near a garden hose but then again the artistic shots of the water running off the grill are cool.
Oh it's all good, the hilarious thing is I deliberately parked near the water spigot, only to find out later that I was a couple of feet short with the hose, at least it was a short trip with the bucket.
starts right up without hesitation....runs well....in those days gas was a nickel a gallon....very masculine machine resembles a healthy rutting male elephant
I bet a torque spec or drawbar pull would be interesting. For instance the Cat RD6 has 10,274lb drawbar pull at full governed RPM of 850 and 11,400lb at 600RPM, with about 46HP at the drawbar. This is a 3 cylinder engine with 623ci 5.75" bore, 8" stroke. I'm sure this old Cat engine has some cool specs too.
You bet, 1128 cubic inch (18.5L), 6.5 inch bore, 8.5 inch stroke. developed 81 horsepower at 650 rpm and produces 660 foot pounds torque at the flywheel. Peak drawbar pull in first gear is stated at 12,360lbs at the Nebraska test.
Beautiful. I wonder how many accident people had back in the day. Also I do guess they were more patient working with slow equipment. In the end it's sound like music drum's
Gas of the day approx 25c per gallon and if road tax existed then, farmers and contractors would probably get a rebate on that, making the fuel less expensive. No doubt these old girls slurped through a fair bit of it when under load. The massive torque produced seems quite unreal when compared with high revving engines!
Subtitles have been added for those interested in exactly what is going on, enjoy.
That's alright saving history

So glad you enjoyed!
Thanks for showing us this fine old machine...I like the old Caterpillar logo on the radiator.
Thanks, kind of neat to see the logo change over the decades.
The quality of the video is fantastic, as is that old Cat. Very impressed. Thank you for this.
I like how you can see the clutch engaging.
Sure is handy when you need to adjust it.
Very good
Everything about that was good. Particularly exciting was seeing the clutch engage and hearing the whole contraption as it lurched forward. I want one! Thanks for that.
The open clutch makes shifting and engaging super easy.
Show of hands! Who had to stop the video and pee after he filled the radiator??? Nice video and thank you from a CAT line technician for keeping this piece of history running!!!
Super cool, thanks so much for watching, I'm glad to be apart of her preservation.
No computers or other electronics to go wrong, just simple mechanical engineering, you can't beat it. That engine started so willingly....beautiful.
Thanks, she is a good runner.
What an amazing piece of history that is. I love seeing old machines start using like new.
Great video! Really enjoyed seeing it as my grandfather had one of these machines with a dozer. Never understood why he sold it until I watched this startup routine. Brutally true.

Caterpillar should go back to that logo, Looks epic.
That's what I was thinking
Yeah pretty neat.
Wow! That's an amazing amount of work that goes into just starting it!
Nice video. What a noise these machines made in those days......
Oh yes its pure music.
@@Rainhill1829 It sure is.
Same tractor they used to run the Okies off their farms in the Grapes of Wrath...pretty intimidating . Great upload, thank you
Neat, I have heard that film referenced a few times, I will have to watch it.
What can there possibly be to not like here? The video does exactly what it said ..... It's a symphony!
They expected electric start.😆
@@Rainhill1829 You're probably right!
What an amazing machine. It's a shame how most companies today have forgotten how to build things to last.
P.S. A funnel can work wonders. :-)
They know how to build, but they want a machine that breaks down so u buy a new one, thats capitalism.
Imagine riding this beast with a couple of mounted machineguns into a battle like " alright rusty boi, ready for one last ride?" And then going down with this beast in the manliest way possible
Hell yeah.
HELL TO THE YES.
I’m a member of a club and someone had the Best version of this and damn it was awesome to see and hear!
Super cool, the Best is a rarity to see indeed.
Rainhill1829 Yeah. It was actually the first time I have ever seen this this style of before and I don’t think I’m going to forget for as long as I live !
Fine work! Your well shot video lets the machine speak for itself.
An amazing engine on an equally stunning tool, starting right away and doing what it has always done, works. A good video .
Thanks for watching, it is a pleasure to run her.
Man I thought she was gonna light off on the first pull , great job really enjoyed watching 😆👍👍
Almost perfect.
Excellent machine, video and editing. Well done!
Thank you so much.
About 100years have passed since the tractor produced. It is woderful to see the normal running of a tractor Caterpillar!!😊😊😊

Sorry.... why drain water? Why don't add antifreeze?

absolutely awesome/ Loved the video. Never seen one started like that. Only seen em started with a crank. Thanks for the video

thrilling and dangerous starting procedure!
