Layton content in 2021? Not the reality I expected, but I'll take it! I played maybe an hour of Curious Village on my DS, and enjoyed it! The Layton universe reminded me a lot of the Ace Attorney games (yes I know there's a crossover), but with more emphasis on interactive puzzle solving, which is a really really cute addition!
I've wanted to cover this song on the channel for SO LONG, I can't tell you how many times I've listened to the live version of this theme. In fact, I finished writing a complete arrangement in June of 2018, but never got around to recording it! I think the accordion part was the biggest roadblock for me - I didn't know any accordion players who I could confidently ask to play the part, plus I didn't know anything about writing for the accordion! Now that I have one of my own, and have learned to play it at a somewhat rudimentary level, I understand it a lot better, and was able to use it to fill in the gaps of this arrangement (which is a completely different one than the 2018 one that I never actually recorded). Full disclosure, that run at 0:57 in the accordion part is SO HARD to play, and what you're hearing is a hodgepodge of a bunch of takes that I did of that melody. I'm pretty confident I could get it down well with enough repetition, but it would take a LOT of repetition that I wasn't quite willing to do for this video, hehe.
This arrangement was influenced by some Brazilian rhythms, including batucada and baiao (not that this video is a perfect example of either of those two things lol). A lot of people think of calm bossa nova music when they think of Brazil, but man, I think of the big loud batucada street drum performances... would love to visit someday and hear one of those for real! The layers of auxillary percussion I added on top of the drum groove really help glue all the parts together. I've always thought that percussion is the most underrated role in the ensemble. It may look really easy to play something like the shaker or the triangle, and physically speaking, it is somewhat, but a good percussionist / percussion section adds SO much to a piece of music! It's just like... fun high frequency ear candy!
Anyway, I hope you dig this arrangement! So happy to finally be able to do this one after a couple of years of waiting!

Luke, remember to appreciate the effort of every musician. That's what a gentlemen does
....If you say so, professah
Yes Herschel...truly!
HEAR, HEAR.
A true gentleman as ever, professor
"I want to hear a story about 🅱️ase🅱️all professah!"
Starting to feel like Carlos is stalking me and deliberately covering tracks I love...
I may or may not be... :)
Now I'm concerned
Listening to this was like saying hello to an old friend. As a person who owns every single Layton game in the series, this brought tears to my eyes. Thank you for this.
You are so welcome :)
I actually have practically every single Layton game! The only ones that I have left are the katrielle game and the ace attorney crossover one! The katrielle one will arrive very soon, and I plan to get the ace attorney one after I actually play the phoenix wright trilogy! I’m so glad the Layton series is not dead!
@@an_eggyou might consider getting the crossover sooner, since servers shutting down in April might make the after game dlc unobtainable
A gentleman don't delay appreciating a masterpiece.
OMG....got a heart by Carlos..OMG
Thank you so much....
OmG
I'm in the midst of a Layton nostalgia rush, and this only fueled it! Curse -- and thank -- you!
Have you played layton's mystery journey yet? It's just as good as the ones with hershal himself! And the twist at the end. .. 😳
@@vu1pix No, I havnt. Ill give it a look-see. Thank you.
I had a major nostalgia turn a few weeks ago and I rebought the 1st 3 games and about to replay them 😆
@@vu1pix listen they can't just HAVE CLIFFHANGERS and IMPLY THAT [REDACTED] without TELLING US ABOUT MORE GAME........ when will we get any news about Mystery Journey 2........ I just want more Layton
0:38 seconds in and I am speechless. This is one of the best tracks you've ever produced! Well done, dude!!!
I dunno man, this SLAPS but that Hydrocity one from Sonic that he did was preeettyyy good
There is so many good Layton arrangements he could do, honestly. Still waiting for the switch release of these games
What you doin here lol
Your a Professor Layton fan?!
My life is now complete. Thank you for playing this piece from my favorite game license.
Oh and #LaytonForSmashBros
He's been my top wanted character for so long. :(
You two are like the only other people I've seen who also want Layton in smash. It would be a dream
LAYTON4SMASH WE HAVE CARLOS ON OUR SIDE
Sigh... I've been wishing for the Professor's invitation for so long. The man deserves it. I'm not hopeful, but it would be a dream come true.
He'd kill a character with just one accusation point 😂
i have been waiting for this day my whole life
And it is finally here :)
I choose to ignore the fact that you wrote this over 2 years ago and pretend this was because of my comment last video asking for it...
regardless, great job as always. love it!
Haha! I mean, I did rewrite the arrangement for this video, though that was probably back in January... so more like 1 month ago, not 2 years ago! :)
Professor Layton deserved a much larger fanbase, it's such a good game
After the new trailer this hits really different
PSD: I appreciate your covers and music!
HE IS BACK!!!!
"That should do it! Every puzzle has an answer."
this certainly feels like a cover that solves all MY problems today~ thanks for the good music, as always
Damn bro, can we all take a sec to appreciate how clean your snare sound is?
Thanks! Partially me, partially my mixer! I actually just got a new snare that sounds even better than this snare I’m using on my kit in this video haha
Layton music is perfect for you, should do Lost/Unwound Future Main Theme next
I'm so glad to hear Professor Layton make it onto the channel. All of the live music is beautiful, and this arrangement is astounding as well! Here's hoping there could be some more songs from this series will catch your ear in the future!
Okay, this is perfection.
Truer words have never been spoken
This is the Layton content we needed and wanted
man with all these accordion covers I'm wondering if we'll finally get some Tri Force Heroes stuff 👀
If enough people ask for it! :)
@@insaneintherainmusic Definitely am with the idea of tri force heroes stuff!
I played Curious Village a little after I started taking piano lessons. I remember unlocking the in-game soundtrack player and just getting so excited. I would take my DS and sit down, trying to piece together the melodies by ear. This game is really what got me into improvisation and jazz, in a way. Thank you, truly.
Was lately replaying these games and been hooked on the accordion of the last specter intro. That opening is one of the best in the series imo. This brings a gentleman's smile to my face
The way this arrangement put a smile on my face is crazy.
Damn it must have been allot of work to find enough talented guys who all look the same for this band!
I'm actually shocked at how quickly you've improved your accordion skills. Respect.
No way! I just finished replaying the trilogy and Carlos posted this! My happiness is through the roof!
This is a good reminder that I need to play the rest of the Layton games. I've only beaten the first one.
Hell yeah, that's what I'm talking about.
You mentioned on Twitter that Layton music was coming.
Well, here I am. Six seconds in and I've already had to pause because my brain cannot comprehend how beautiful and clear your tone is on clarinet.
My brother and I both told each other first thing about this video this morning. Your work brings us such joy hearing our favorite pieces from our childhoods be so lovingly reimagined. Thank you for the amazing work you do!
YES!!!
Professor Layton remains one of my favorite video game series of all time and I can listen to the soundtrack for hours. I’m so pumped I can add this to my Layton playlist!
He's back.
The memories came flooding back...the true power of music man... Wonderful arrangement!
OH MY GOD THIS IS SO GOOD IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS FOR SO LONG
I've just started re-playing Curious Village the other week, this is amazing timing!! Lovely stuff as always, more Layton please!!
Been waiting for this since you covered Ace Attorney soundtracks. It sounds so brilliant! Was so worth the wait.
Only a true gentleman could accomplish making such a fantastic arrangement for a great game series!
that clarinet solo changed my life.
I love this so much wow
this cover alone might have brought me back to streaming/speedrunning Layton more often lol
Carlos this is so insanely good!!!! You nailed the textures
Yes! I've been wanting you to cover this song for so long! It's my favorite video game song of all time! 🎩☕
A wonderful version of this song. I have played every Professor Layton game, it might be my favourite series of games. Thank you so much for this.
Sipping tea at a swanky nightclub with my apprentice, looking for clues for our next mystery and this plays in the background
I'm so glad that the Layton fandom is still alive, if quiet. I still love these games and replay them.
I audibly gasped when I first saw this I was so excited lmao. Anyway, I love the Layton games and their soundtracks so much (some of my all time favorites), and this cover is absolutely incredible. I love the clarinet and accordion and how prominent they are, but all of the instruments and background elements are amazing and add to the arrangement perfectly. I loved every second of it
Crazy how I went back to play the Layton games and naught but a week after starting you drop this ear candy. I love your work Carlos!!
Oh man, this is incredible! Layton music is some of the most underappreciated music in gaming, in my opinion. Love this so much.
Man, the clarinet and saxophone really sound like a completely different instrument together. The clarinet adds to the richness of the music, and adds such a nice sound to the arrangement. Artsy BS out of the way, I legit have watched this like 40 times in the past few days. Fantastic piece of music. Great work on this one!
YESSSSSS, I’ve been looking for a jazz variation of this theme for SO LONGGGG. Thank you so much for your awesome efforts!
I cant believe you have arranged this! It was a dream of mine for a long time, and i had pretty much given up on it. Thank you so much, this is simply amazing.
Your arrangement suddenly makes me grabbing my Nintendo DS and exploring Layton's world again. Great work! :)
this cover is so so good! it retains the same mysterious tone as the original (especially with the clarinet), but the jazz gives it a fun touch!!
This is too good!!!!
Now all i need is a 1 hour version. :D
Favorite jazz youtuber doing a cover of one of my favorite songs from one of my favorite games? I feel so blessed aaaa
I’ve only seen Layton vs. Phoenix Wright so far, and found it from the Ace Attorney series, but I absolutely fell in love with that game so I’ll be checking out more of the Layton games for sure! Wonderful rearrangement, as always. :)
I wouldn't have known this was from a game unless you told me. Man that's fresh!
Omg the Layton Bros. OST would be perfect for Carlos
"A true gentleman always modulates!"
Words to live and die by.
AWOOGA that accordian though. Accordian is such a cool instument aha.
I love the Professor Layton series, I'm glad it's still getting attention.
Great rendition!
Even right at the start, the accordion's got me feeling the groove
I remember playing these games so fondly... Thank you for bringing back such great memories!
This is so good! I fucking cried! This series is tied to my soul and you have kicked me in the gut with nostalgia feelings but I thank you for it so much! This is now one of my favorite pieces of music ever made!
thanks for covering one of my favorite game series of all time
alright the one song i've been holding out for has arrived. i can now die with no regrets. but i wont because then i'd miss the rest of your arrangements
This is what being a true gentleman must mean
The range of instrumentation on this one is crazy! It sounds amazing :D
There’s a lot going on here for sure! The percussion really adds a lot haha
No way! Ever since the end of the year of Sinnoh you’ve been releasing banger after banger
A true gentleman is able to play triangle well. It is not a simple instrument, there is more than meets the eye.
The modulation is so sweet waaaa so cool !!! 4:05
Love this so much - the professor Layton series holds a special place in my heart. Thank you for this!
That was such a good arrangement! I adore the Layton games and it would be wonderful to see more Layton arrangements in the future!
This mix on this is crisp bruhhhh
there is so much love stored in me for you and your content god DAMN IT CARLOS
So much concentration during that big accordion lick, lol. You played it well!
Another absolute banger in the books! Thanks for sharing your awesome talent with us, Carlos!
nostalgia through the roof. tight as always, mr. in the rain.
aaaah how i love the layton series! the soundtrack is impeccable - thanks for this arrangement!
This is the best thing I could have possibly seen in my UA-cam inbox today. So good!
I live for these triangle moments.
Heck yea man, you killed it!! Another great arrangement, just like a gentleman would do
The last three songs have been so good!!they have all been up with MY favourite songs. Continue with the great work!! Looking forward to it!!
Well my boy, that clarinet solo reminds me of a puzzle!
Absolutely Beautiful Piece of art, I play the heck out of this like the Iris cover done way back.
this is extraordinary. it reminded me of simpler times, and going on vacation with my parent playing layton on my ds
0:31 that is the MEATIEST bass sound I have ever heard in my life.
Upright bass has so much MEAT
Damn man! Your rendition gives me goosebumps! (That ending was god tier btw!) Such a great track!! ✨
Oh man. Such a godly interpretation. I'm very happy to hear you did this! Great cover as usual.
Ah, my favorite game series!!!! Thank you for putting this lovely thing together!!!!!!
Luke, a true gentleman never forgets to like, comment, subscribe, and turn on notifications on an insaneintherain video.
Ooh, Killer Saxophone! I like this already!
AUGH! *EVEN MORE KILLER ACCORDION!*

WHY AM I TWO WEEKS LATE, THANK YOU SO MUCH I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR SO LONG FOR THIS AAAAA
Incredible arrangement from one of my favorite games of all time. Love it!
Always nice to hear professor layton stuff
This channel's content is insanely amazing
Carlos out here making my day as always! Gonna go play some profesor layton now cause i’ve been put in the mood.
YESSSS
I'd kill for the lost/unwound future theme, ngl
Saw this video in my sub box and started vibrating intensely (it is always a good day when you see professor layton stuff).
Loved the part at the end, your remixes are always exciting bc they add new twists where it's least expected. :)
omg, not only you are amazing on the musical performance with all these different instruments, but you're also great at mastering and editing. You are so damn talented.
OHHHHHH SHIT!!! That came in smoooooth! Oh my god!
Dude, I gotta say, your music was never really dirty or badly mixed, but listening to this after listening to your old covers makes you look like a sound mixing GOD lmao.
