I think the problem in the US is sometimes voters fall for actors, who have little regard for experts and are easily persuaded by TV shows and radical advisors who control them. Reagan and Trump have that in common, but unfortunately Trump takes it to new heights. Electability here too often relates to image over substance. If "their guy" does anything eminently, obviously, egregiously wrong -- and they KNOW that thing is eminently, obviously, egregiously wrong -- they don't feel remorse, they don't feel obligated to justify their position. They find some random f*cking thing the Democrats or "Media" or Hillary goddamn Clinton have done and talk about that instead, rationalizing every horrible thought, word, and policy as a retaliation against some far-worse alternative, as some perverse manifestation of their ethical and intellectual infallibility.
Meanwhile, average, every-day Americans with no sense of partisanship -- who detest the very political establishment President Trump campaigned against -- sit awe-struck, embarrassed, and ashamed.
Do these ethically and intellectually infallible peons of the President care that their fellow Americans feel this way? Do they even recognize the possibility that someone could find fault in his methods and behavior? No. They ridicule their fellow Americans as traitors and simpletons, branding them as political opponents and, therefore, unworthy of having an opinion.
This mindset transcends partisan ties or ideological content, and it will surely lead to our country's destruction.

He then uses what he "learns" from an inaccurate show to push policies that will affect 300 million people. I think this shows that all cable news is pretty awful. Fox says something dumb, Trump tweets about it, and then CNN spends hours talking about Trump's tweet. It's just a cycle of talking heads. Where is the actual journalism?

In my country Australia, ABC corp claims to be neutral but are in-fact at the whim of the government in charge which can cut funding at anytime. You see where I am going with this. They WILL ALWAYS have a right wing agenda, but masquerading as not by only give small criticisms but large condemnation of the parties not in charge.
Their idea of "being fair" is giving equal chance for all parties to spew their garbage, even if one side is being more immoral in lying to the Australian people. If one side claimed that coal plants were cheaper than wind turbines, they would endorse the idea, never going down hard on the facts. Such was the case recently where a minister subtle lied about wind turbine cost, not taking into account new price build and running operations, wind turbines are now just as cost-competitive if not more than replacement of aging coal-fired plants. And the audience who is not educated in the matter, who see these turbine farms and see it as flimsy and a novelty (not to be taken seriously) it completely fooled them. They have no idea of the drawbacks of inefficient larger fossil fuel plants. The rest of the world is pushing ahead with renewables, not just because of some stupid insipid 'greeny naivety' but because it's becoming economical as with the improvement of power system control technology. Only Australia and South Africa are still so insistent in their heavy usage of coal.
We see this in America now, where fact checking no longer holds any value. It's those with the most flamboyant views that get attention and get asked for more media presence. Lies are flying hundreds of miles an hour, too quick to account for all. In Russia (state puppet controlled large medias) this is notoriously called misinformation bombardment. A perfect strategy in a open source internet society such as our era, with shorter attention spans and larger intake of information available at our fingertips.

When journalism used to be a monopoly or close to one it was much more factual and u would consistently see both sides of the coin. It seems to be the case that contrary to regular economics, a monopoly in journalism is actually a good thing.
the economist is pretty good at that.. there are very few services that maintain neutrality though. I like how the New York Times has a wide range of opinions that make it hard to identify it's actually views so I respect that as well.
